Still no signs of ALSA (and CML2 for that matter) making it into the 'official' development kernel yet.. This is really a thing I'd like to see in it.. But it's nice that Linus already accepted two controversial patches (O(1)-scheduler and the pre-emptible kernel patch)..
Why in the world would a *user* install a kernel. Yesterday, I tried to explain a colleague of mine (we both work in the Geographic Information Systems industry, and he's an NT system administrator) what a kernel is. The user doesn't care if he can get another extra 0.0000000002 bogomips with a rebuild of the kernel. The user wants the software to *work*, just browse the web, type some documents.
And besides, why has the kernel to be recompiled? Why can't I just use my moduler kernel? apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-686-smp is a lot simpler for me than downloading a kernel source, untar'ing it, and so on..
And what about hardware swapping? What happens when my aunt tillie's IDE controller dies and she replaces it with another.. OOOPS.. You compiled a kernel for a specific piece of hardware, now you can't boot anymore..
Modular kernels are great.. Let's use them...

There's a whole new file selection widget in Gnome/GTK 2.0.. It's very nice, and looks much like the Win32 file selection dialog (but of course, it's better because it's open source and all that:))
Uhmmm... I'll tell you before anyone else will.. You don't have to use Nautilus... Just use the rest of GNOME and drop Nautilus if you don't like it...
Try to do something simple, like finally adding module parameters to the framebuffer (sorry, personal irritation, but still haven't had the time to do it myself). Then keep enhancing and bug fixing small things, and move on from there to bigger changes... Post your patches on the LKML, and listen to their comments (and 'flame' them if you disagree)...
That's how I rolled into the business..
(And if you get me those module parameters, I'll big you the best hug you've ever had:))
"Amazing.. it's been out over 3 hours and not discussed to death. Well, maybe there's not as many bleeding-edge crazies out there. But if there are, here's what's new. You can get it at the usual place, but please use the mirrors if you can."
Do you really expect many people to run this kernel? It's unstable as ****, mostly due to the block IO changes.. I think most users would rather not have their drive corrupted because they are running the latest and coolest kernel..
Anyway, no 2.5 for me, until ALSA enters this series of kernels..
What does the Hurd have to do with this release of potato? The Hurd doesn't even get included with Woody, it's just not release quality yet (although it's much fun to experiment/play with for the real men)...
There will probably be unofficial Woody ISO's of the Hurd, but Potato ISO's? Forget it.. There are too much PATH_MAX problems and stuff like that in Potato...
Not to bash you, but that's totally useless, you're downloading Packages files of stable and testing, and they will never be used (because the versions in unstable are newer)...
I don't need an IDE I can write documents in, I don't need an IDE to do my financial administration...
I just would like to have an IDE with a (semi-)integrated debugger, just like Visual Studio has.. And, a small button to order another pizza and soda... Hehe:)
Too bad Not a Number went bankrupt about 2 months ago.. I hope somebody can continue their work (maybe they can donnate the codebase to the public). Also, still haven't seen any press about their bankruptcy, although I know for sure they're bankrupt (I know a lot of guys working there)...
The Japanese PS2 has a PCMCIA slot to which it connects the harddisk, the European and US version have a special bay for the harddisk and before the end of the year even PS2's with the harddisk built into it.
I think you're missing the point. GTK+ isn't providing a framebuffer, GTK+ needs a framebuffer now, like SVGA-lib.
Looks like GTK+ is going to blow back some life into SVGA-lib.
If you want to run non-suid-root binaries that display graphics, I suggest you check out the efforts of the GGI project.
Under what license is this released? And is it the full sourcecode (with other words: is the 'engine' code also included)?
I don't want to download the whole file through a dial-up connection...

This is just a copy&paste of the article to which the slashdot story links.. Thanks for wasting my bandwidth...
You want screenshots? Screenshots being served for you, sir!

Okay, I'll tell you before anyone else will.. GNOME is not a windowmanager, nor does it include one (although they recommend Sawfish)..
GNOME is a desktop-environment..

If you really hate your data, now (with the BIO changes) is a good time to update...
:).
That's the only reason I can come up with

Duh, ofcourse... My bad.. I just woke up, you know :)
Hmmm thinking about that.. That would be something like:
:)
father + mother = me
me + mother = me
Uhmm.. That can't be healthy...
Okay:
:)
c# compiler source + gnu c compiler = C# compiler
C# compiler source + c# compiler = another c# compiler
app source code + c# compiler = app
So it's not the application (exe?) that can compile, but it's the compiler that can compile...
Uhmm.. Yeah..
If it's a very clean application, you just need to recompile it for Windows using GTK+ for Win32, and everything should be okay.
A colleague of mine recompiles gimp once a week for windows, and it works! Never done it myself though, but I don't think it's that much work...
Check out Achtung. which is the 'official' presentation program of the GNOME office suite.
All we need now is full VBS support so we can program some cool virii in Gnumeric.
GNU's Not Unix.. But Unix is Gnu? :)
:)
Bad joke, please forgive me

Get the more or less official debian sid packages here:

The power of open source.. Once there is one OS available, you can 'easily' roll your own :)
