    That's typically not the case in the USA, it is usually just a few km/miles, except in sparsely populated states. I live in a state that is larger than the UK and has half the population of Birmingham, England. Older kids, high school, travel significant distances to school by bus. Younger ones not so much.

    Yes. Look at the cases in news of pedophiles who are teachers. No comments now about "Gee I wish I had a hot babe like that to initiate me when I was 13" - the fact of the matter is that teachers are in a position of authority and if she or he has sex with a student its an abuse of position.

    And in the United States in the early 1970s I did similar things. Crime was WAY worse then than now. But nobody thought anything of it. We have become insane.

    Even the most anti-vax folks don't seem to doubt the value of vaccinations. What they object to is mercury compounds such as thimerosol in them, and THAT they claim is the thing that causes damage.

    I'm a true conservative - I think that for the most part people should be left alone and free to live their lives in peace by the state and by business - but I don't see a lot of talk in right wing circles that Obama is like nobody before - he's often compared to Jimmy Carter, for example.

    Indeed. Does anyone know of an internet search provider that, when you try and search for stuff it brings up something more than pages and pages of shopping ads? At this point I'm finding that 'net searching for information is getting pretty useless.

    The US didn't need much int he way of computers in the 1940s, it had people who knew what they were doing. Not so much, now.

    Yes but according to the liberals, this was government spending so it was good. It is criminal. NOBODY, NOBODY in the US doesn't think that we do not need good infrastructure, safe water, safe food, etc. Those of us who look at the incredibly mind boggling amount of government waste and realize that our life blood is going to pay for parties like this are told we are 'selfish' -- while we're also told "You know, when you reach retirement age there won't be social security."

    That is insane. The people in East Germany were GERMAN, many of them had RELATIVES in West Germany. Could you stand it if your aunts, uncles, cousins lived in a totalitarian state (never mind that we all do in the US now at least it isn't as bad as it was in the GDR). No. They were happy to unify and have all Germans subject to the Basic Law rather than totalitarian fascism because they were the same people.

    I suspect what they'd like is enough to eat, an idea that if things do start to go bad economically whole swathes of the country won't be starved to death while others aren't, and lack of a secret police that drags you off to camps for minor things.
