Actually a game where you could shoot jews would be so controversial it'd never get released, but it's ok to shoot germans and americans 'in context'. Remember, this is WWII stuff, not modern day events. Strange how there are a whole slew of these games all of a sudden huh?

I saw a show on Nokia not too long ago, and one of the developers was talking about how gread 3g is and all that jazz. He mentioned games that he'd been working on and then proceeded to start a game of seek 'n' destroy. You can play with many people in a real area and it looked pretty fun. Your phone screen shows a radar screen with your target's general direction then proceeds to tell you how close you're getting to them as you move. When you get close enough you can hit a key on the phone to 'shoot' them. You can keep a running score, etc. Fun stuff to get fat Americans back in the sunlight again :)

I wonder if you could build a regenerative motor that throttles on and off, and when it's off, it uses the person's motion to recharge. This is how electric cars recharge (regenerate during braking, etc.) so I don't see why it can't be done here. Sure, it's a magnitude smaller than an electric car, but then again, they're only shooting for 2hp not 100 or more. I think if you have someone walking, that should generate a few watts to charge it right?

Yet more lack-of-hardware-understanding. Most of the Intel chips in recent years have thermistors-on-die which throttle back the chip if the core temp gets too high. The last generation Athlons were missing this but the new stuff all has it. Unless this is a pre-amd XP chip, don't worry too much. If the cooler quits working, the worst that can happen is either your chip throttles back and your system chunks, or it locks up, you lose some data (maybe) and you reboot after it cools off (and you figure out what happened). You won't destroy your motherboard or your chip in this scenario.

Looks like you've fallen into the 'measure performance by clock speed' trap that others following Intel-compatible architectures often do. Mhz/ghz is NOT a measure of speed when comparing risc-like chipsets from Motorola and IBM. Alot of g4's can outperform Intel chips that run at twice the mhz rating. AMD has just proven this when you compare the new AMD XP chipsets to Intel chipsets. The AMD's can smoke Intel chips that cost alot more and run at a higher clock speed. They have more instructions per clock cycle than the Intel chips do, among other things.

Don't be fooled by mhz ratings, pure and simple.

I remember when the creator of the Tick was interviewed about the live action show...he said alot of the stupid dialogue wasn't his idea and he seemed kinda pissed that some knucklehead edited it to be that way.

Networks are great at shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to innovation. Remember the Clerks animated cartoon? It only lived long enough to spawn 6 episodes but was hilarious and had the trademark Clerks humor out the wazzoo. The episodes built the plot successively, so if you didn't see episode one before 2 you could be slightly lost.

Guess what. NBC (or was it CBS) aired the 4th episode as the pilot! People were lost and wondering what the hell was going on when they saw it. After 4 was 5 and 6 but that was it. It got canned. I suggest everyone go grab it on DVD. A true jewel.

I hope someone mods you up. Good points indeed. My tnt2 ultra was still kicking (and still is on my brother's computer) and still has mad features. The unified driver architecture is brilliant. If you install the nvidia drivers under linux, you can switch from a TNT to a Geforce3 and anywhere in between while having to make NO CHANGES to your xconfig or anything else.

Also recently someone benchmarked the geforce3 ti under linux. The 2314 drivers under linux give better performance than winxp in quake3 at most resolutions. RTCW didn't fare quite as well but the MP release is still beta. I bet TTimo hasn't slept for weeks.

  25. crank the ignorance dial all the way to 11 please on System of the Year, Linux Style · · Score: 1

I think your framerate is gonna be a hell of alot faster on the Geforce3 if that's all your concerned about. Also RTCW supports compressed textures (read: detail), Trueform, vertex shading, hardware t&l, etc. The Geforce3 is nice but realistically, not many games really cater to it yet.

Besides, does it matter how old games are? It's the popularity. Look at how old Half Life is, and it still rocks and has a huge following. Until something comes along to kick it's ass and be the 'next big thing', those games are still used as the mark of quality. Games like Max Payne are great for awhile but if you can't keep playing it online, people forget about it.

So there you have it. The most popular FPS games are available on linux or can be run under wine/winex. Dispel the myth, drown the FUD.
