    Your chair *MUST* have an arm rest. This was the one most important thing that gave me a mouse arm.

    Get a smaller keyboard so the distance travelled between the keyboard and the mouse is shorter. I use a MS Natural Elite keyboard.

    Try to avoid using the mouse when you don't have to. Use keyboard shortcuts instead of menus.

    Be very restrictive by using the correct typing on your keyboard. E.g. always use the right Ctrl key when doing a C-x c in Emacs and not the left one.

    And the last one, use the mouse with the left hand. I had to resort to this last year. But haven't had any problems after I corrected my typing, avoided using the mouse too much and got a correct chair.

    Not that anyone will read this. *sob*

    For you who didn't bother to read the article!
    A Mozilla alpha version will be released Dec 15 and the first beta will be released somewhere in the middle of February. This is not the same as a branded Netscape Beta, which will take place some time after the Mozilla Beta.

    The article mainly complaints about Mozilla lateness and worries that corporate users are moving towards IE. They also partly blaim XUL for some of this lateness.

    Two weeks ago they claimed that Mozilla will ship within a month and wouldn't support XML. The sad thing was that a swedish newspaper (Computer Sweden) cited this article also. I've never seen an apology fot that piece.

    And your hardware is? Given the experience from earlier Q3Test and Q2 the Linux version is about 10-20% slower for VooDoo-2 cards. Comparing Riva TNT and TNT2 is probably much worse until XFree-4.0 is released. With my slow computer 10-20% is very important. At least until I buy my Athlon. ;)

    Could someone explain how IPOs work. If I look at yahoo they say that Cobalt has changed +554%.
    But the Day's Range goes from 130 - 158. So if I had put in a buy order on Cobalt below $130 at the beginning of the day I wouldn't have got any stock?

    Sighh, some day I have to learn how the stock market works...

    And instead of make menuconfig or make config you should do a make oldconfig, which only asks for new options.

    So you use Linux as a server? I use it as my home computer and have played Quake 2 for almost a year in Linux. I also use it for as a development machine.

    Are you condemning me back to Windows again?

    Get Lost, Linux is for everybody who wants to use and extend it.

    Hurray for Unreal Tournament in Linux. Now all I need is support for NVidia cards so I can go out and buy a GeForce.

    I must say that I'm not too impressed with this review. It gives rating 9/10 without saying what the reference value is. And the review is so shallow. Coloring of keywords have been standard in most editors for years.
    My advice is to take Visual Studio C++ 6.0 and XEmacs+DDD+autoconf as reference. Point out all pros and cons comparing with these two systems. And keep references to old reviews.

    I almost a volunteer to make such a review but I guess I'm to biased towards XEmacs+DDD+autoconf.

    No X has never crashed on me (three years that is). Of course I don't have a bleeding edge graphics card with my Matrox Mystique.

    The worst that has happened is that lesstif has stolen the keyboard input and the mouse (until they fixed the problem last year). I had to go to another computer and kill the Motif application. (It was DDD, just for the record)

    Actually, I can't even remember if Linux has ever crashed for ne. :) My NT box at work dies about once a week. :(

    Working hardware does not cause Blue Screen of deaths in NT either. Linux has had problems with SCSI cards from Adaptec.
    (Yes a server should not need a graphics card)

    This makes a Linux box unsecure.

    New Kernel patches can most certainly cause trouble for people. (and I doo mean 2.2.x patches). It has for i.e. NFS, and remember the memory leak in 2.2.9?

    Personally, I think that the article was incredibly stupid. Written by a Windows 9x user maybe?

    NT is better than the 9x series by miles, but of course not as good as Linux. ;)

    He prefers NextStep.
    He works on NT mainly.
    But also on Mac, since that platform is the shakiest one. And if it works on Macs, then it probably works on all the other platforms.

    UML software is available in Linux also. The package called "Together" (www.oi.com) beats most of what I've seen on Windows, including Rational Rose. The big problem with Together is that it is written in Java and was horrible slow on my computer. It didn't last a day. :(

    I'll do that. But first I must at least try it. So much to do and so little time. ;) Since Jessie is oriented towards one window, I think that a similar approach to Visual C++ is the way to solve it. The classes and structs are displayed as a treeview, where every member is one node.

    Disclaimer, I haven't run it yet.

    Pros:
    + The gprof analyzer looks really beautiful. Maybe not as powerful as NuMega TrueTime or Rational Quantify, but very promising. But definetly better than reading raw gprof output.

    Cons:
    - Java. I really don't like Java on Linux. But I will give it another try with this application. Maybe it will be my first usable Java application.

    - The data displayer does not look as powerful as in i.e. DDD.

    Who ever wrote cvs is worth a price.

    Then you rant that you have to pay for writing proprietary software. Many with me have the opinion is that if you write proprietary software you should pay for it.

    Then you rant about bloat and C++. And in the next sentence you say that you would prefer Java. Earth calling, Java on Linux is one of the most bloated things you could use. Java on Linux is a painful experience, which really defeats the write once run everywhere slogan.

    Please stop pushing down your opinions down peoples throats. We have our own opinion and if you don't like it, it's you problem.

    You should discover the beauty of virtual desktops. And understand that integrated debugging is not that important (unless you can apply code changes without restarting the application, a.k.a. Edit and Continue).

    I set up one desktop with XEmacs. I divide XEmacs in three buffers. At the bottom I have my compile buffer. Above I use two source buffers splitted vertical.
    In another desktop I set up the DDD debugger windows, formed exactly as I want it.
    And in the third desktop I have Netscape as help system (I hate both info and man pages).

    OK, I still miss a autoconf project manager, and a graphical profiler. But from that I am pretty pleased with developing without an IDE.

    (I use Visual C++ 6.0 daily, so I have a really good but buggy IDE to compare with)

    Mozillazine has nothing to do with Netscape. It is driven by an enthusiast, just like Slashdot started out.

    And why are you referring to Microsoft? Slashdot also uses a SQL server, which have had problems from time to time.

    Ok, here's my suggestion.
    Set your threshold to 1. And use hard thresholds, since this will hide all responders to the Troll also.

    Rob, I think that you should use these settings for new accounts, since most people doesn't bother to change these.

    I have also removed Display Scores, since I prefer to decide which postings I like. Banning the worst abusers seems to be good solution also. I also remove postings less than 15 characters to remove 'First Post' and other uninteresting stuff.

    Unfortunately, I have spent almost all my moderator points on Trolls instead of promoting interesting postings. :-/

    I just wanted to add that you also can hide replies to a comment below your threshold.

    People, please have a look at your preferences. The Preferences are very good for filtering out messages below your threshold. You can even filter out First Posts before they are moderated down.

    So, posts that says 'Good Riddance, Slashdot' or 'That was the last time I used Slashdot' really makes me sad. Change your filtering instead.

    And last, good bye W. Richard. Stevens, you have really helped people using and programming UNIX. It sure helped me a lot when I was at the University.

    I am not sure what you are getting at. The few times I run Windows is for games. Who should I send $1200? For that sum of money I could buy myself a new computer. You got to keep things in perspective. For a company, paying $1200 is not a big deal. But for a single person it's an awful lot of money. I guess I should be sending money to Linux kernel developers, Cygnus, KDE, GNOME and Xfree86 also?
    That way Windows suddenly sounds much more attractive.

    Show me where I advocate GPL in my statement. I use Qt in Linux and am happy with it. But I wouldn't pay $1200 to be able to run my application in Windows.

    So that it will be easier to convert to Linux later.

    But Troll Tech owns the code and can do whatever they like with it. Both GTK and wxWindows is available on Windows. Instead of whining about Qt, I think people should use wxWindows or gtk. When Troll Tech start losing money on their strategy they will surely change to a more open approach.

    As an AC said, the kernel is already splitted. It's called patches. Haven't downloaded the source since 2.1.x something.
