Samba is not a piece of "hobby software". Samba is used everywhere for mission critical systems. I've worked as a consultant at 10+ banks/tradinghouses. Working at these sites, I've encountered Samba on each of them.
Might have been the first product, but wasn't it the SAP port to OS390/zOs compared to the SAP port to Linux on S390 that really opened the eyes of the phb's? - Wasn't it something like 30 man-years for the native port vs. 1 man-week for the Linux port - not to mention that the Linux port ran a *lot* faster (read > 30 x)?
Apart from that; thanks a lot for the port...its one of the key products I need on Linux to enable me to use Linux at work:-)

It does cvs as well...
For me, the main benefit is that the Websphere studio (the Workbench (which builds on Eclipse) + IBM extensions), Websphere advanced and db2 are now available on Linux. That means that I can get away with using Linux at work without anyone really noticing (except for increased productivity). No more NT4. No more rebooting to make Websphere release ports. No more f**ked up textfiles when deploying to Solaris. No more registry chaos etc. Feels good. Thanks IBM.
I agree!
- I've got a swedish keyboard at home, american and a swiss-german keyboards at work and from time to time I have to use the french keyboard. People around me speak english, high-german, swiss-german, italian, and french.
CAN'T WE JUST STOP THIS MADNESS AND JUST USE ENGLISH! - It's the one language everyone understands!
I always wanted the Meccano as a kid, but we could never afford it since it was rather pricy. Maybe this played a part in its demise?
In a way, I guess this was a good lesson as well - it taught me the value of money - it was shit at the time though..

Thats pretty strange... The only banks I've seen so far that forces the user to use Windows is Banque General du Luxembourg (Luxembourg) and SHA (Sweden). I've seen a lot of online banking with banks in Switzerland, Luxebourg and Sweden and it is an anomaly to see one that does not support open standards. Personally, one of the requirements when I look for banking services is - naturally - that I must be able to use their services. If it is only available on Windows - then I cant use them. For me its absurd that I should have to buy and install software for a few hundred quid just to be able to use online banking.
So whats good with socialism?
- that warped theory (socialism) was disproven long ago, the people cheering on socialism is basically of the same fiber as that of the people still claiming that the earth is flat.
Opensource development is a great way to break out of the paradox. Your contributions can always be evaluated by a potential employer, reducing their risk (in the same way that requiring professional experience reduces risk).
What you dont want, as an employer, is a person graduated with a CS major who still doesn't know how to code/design software/solve problems.
- Some universities are pushing their students throug CS in a NT-only environment. I would never hire a developer fresh out of such an education.
Go away. You're ruining our illusion of africa consisting of well-meaning poverty ridden people that are suffering because we havent given them enough "self-awareness"-courses and other highly relevant aid.
This is besides the point. MS cant ban developers using BSD licensed software since their TCP/IP stack comes from the xxxBSD projects. Even MS cant claim that something is *baad* (mmkay?) if they use it themselves..
I really like working with VA but I had to drop it because:
- STILL only 3.02 available on linux
- The repository sucks - the team repository has on several occasion semi-trashed projects for me. You still have to have an external version control system outside of VA.
- jdk support. IBM is allways so sloooow to supply up to date jdk's. Is it still 1.1.8 for VA 3.0.2 for linux?
The points above were enough for me, and the company I work for, to switch to JBuilder (which I think was a good move). I have since switched to Forte, which seems to be really good.
Maybe he wants to broaden his skills.
Knowing only one language ( with quite limited usage many would say ) is like being a construction worker who only knows how to use one particular type of hammer. Sure you can use that hammer to fasten a screw to a wall, however it is usually more efficient to use a screwdriver. A developer who only knows one platform and one tool can not - in my opinion - call him or herself a developer without lying through his/her teeth.

Now that its a requirement to be a client of Microsoft to be able to access information from the government - does this mean that MS client licenses will be tax deductible ? It should - considering your rights as a citizen appears to be hinging on if you are a customer of MS.
From what I remember they have redundant links to a number of nations. That would mean 3+ governments to attack. They are also working on offsite mirroring to other parts of the world..the RIAA are going to have to work for their money this time;-)
That kinda was my point. I dont mind the kiddie having tools to attack me. The online community should, however, have the chance to fire back just like you would if I was pointing my gun at you. The way it is today is:
1. scriptkiddies shooting of their gun at anyone
2. system administrators under attack unable to act.
3. incompetent government officials continuously barking up the wrong tree - most of the time doing more harm than good (read: laws against reverse-engineering, laws against personal encryption etc.)
Of course not. That'd be plain stupid. I would just prefer script kiddies to be judged by people who know what these kiddies are doing instead of some ignorant represantative from a regional government (ie: a suit who takes a kids computer into custody as because that kid posted an article on a security newsgroup).

Bullshit. People are that stupid in all walks of life.

"...swelling them up to about the size of a football."
WOW! - now THATS macho!
You cannot ... anymore than a company can hide income and assetts by sticking them in swiss bank accounts
And santa claus really exists, right?

R520m is cool - bluetooth and all...(and the bluetooth stuff actually works (!)) but the 8850 is the most beautiful phone ever made..

Doesnt work under Linux though.

Hmm..interesting. That's the reason why I turned down job offers from California. I thought it was too sterile, but then again..I'm from Europe.
You mean that a social life bites you in the cock?? - damn! better keep away from that then. Lucky I'm working as a programmer. My cock is safe.
