The reason I will never use *BSD is entirely because of the license. Great technology, sure, but I don't want to see a return to the unix wars of the early 90's, and without a mechanism for enforcing freedom (i.e. the GPL) *BSD is doomed in our capitalistic system by standard corporate practice.

    Oh please...spare me.

    • GPL: the "we TELL you" what "free" means, leftist political license.
    • BSD: The "free" as in freedom, Libertarian license.

Tho' the Klipsch can sound both loud and "dramatic," I did a side-by-side comparison with the Mirage AVS-500 system and chose the Mirage for better midrange and better sound when playing music. The AVS-500 incls 4 AVS-200 satellites, an AVS-100 center and the FRx-S8 sub. A very musical set of speakers, yet no lack of drama when playing surround-sound DVDs.

It's hard to find Mirage at a good price, but I got both a good price and great service at Kief's Audio/Video (disclaimer: I don't have a financial stake in Kief's, just a satisfied customer).

BTW, I'm not anti-Klipsch - their higher end stuff sounds great. It's just that the ProMedia can't cut it next to offerings from Mirage, Energy or Atlantic Technology. OTOH, the ProMedias are the best PC speaker set out right now.

What cdrw units should I look into to get this kind of speed ?

My understanding is that it doesn't actually encode at this speed. What happens is that the audio files can be copied off to the hard drive very quickly as there's no "ripping" involved per se - BeOS can mount an audio CD & show each track as a .WAV file. The user can then play the orig tracks while they're being encoded in the background.

I run Win98 (for games), FreeBSD and BeOS, but always go back to Be for MP3 stuff. The "mount a CD and show tracks as .WAV files" is just too handy, and my favorite encoder (LAME) compiles and runs just fine under BeOS. It also handles "multimedia" tasks very fast & cleanly from a user's perspective (e.g. the "listen to a track while encoding in the backgound" thing mentioned above).
