I don't recall learning anything like that in school, although granted, I mostly grew up in a town 1500 miles from either coast [and maybe 500 miles from the Gulf of Mexico]. I only went to school on the east coast [NJ] through 2nd grade, and otherwise only spent summers at the beach in NJ.
In the course of reading books on my own, however; I did learn that if the sea suddently recedes, to get the hell outta dodge asap.
Plus, if you addd the digits in 13, you get 4 (April being the fourth month of the year.) On top of that if, you subtract 4 (month) and 13 (day) from 2029 and add those digits, you get 5 which is amazingly the same number that you get when you sum the digits in 202 and subtract that from 9.
Hmmm, add to all this the fact that 04/13/2029 will be my 55th birthday, and I start to get the idea that it will be a very bad day for me. Such a shame, I usually have great luck on Friday 13th's.
I'm not sure I'd really want to advertise my Christmas specials during or immediately following the airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas.
No, but it proves that most people probably just watch the pretty cartoons, and have no concept of the meaning of what they've just watched. Because you KNOW that most of them watch the show, then said, "Oooh, Mervyn's is having a sale!".
This reminds me of my father-in-law. I don't think it had anything to do with his time in the military, but he has more media files than probably 99.9% of people on slashdot. [he's not on slashdot]. His media pack-rat tendencies come from long before he had access to the internet. He used to have 7 VCR's, usually recording 24/7. If you've ever heard of a cartoon, he probably has a copy of it. Too bad none of it is indexed or filed in any useful way. We've got some of it cleaned up, but his dining-room table used to be covered in 3' high stacks of cdr spools that he had burned stuff to.
Once he found the goldmine that is usenet, he was hooked, and now his cable-modem spends 24/7 downloading movies, cartoons, tv shows, video games, books-on-tape,etc. I'm afraid to count how many cdr's he's got in his house. Actually, I hope to god his house never catches fire, or the entire neighborhood will need to be evacuated due to the toxic fumes! He doesn't watch or use 99% of what he downloads. If he finds a movie he likes, or a game he loves to play he'll go out and buy it. I think the only thing he uses regularly are the books-on-tape he downloads, as he loves books but reading gives him headaches.
We've tried to talk to him about it. It's really ridiculous. God knows how much he's spent on CDR's. On the other hand, with a new child on the way, it'll be nice to know that we have ready access to any cartoon we could possibly imagine, so we can raise the kid on Looney Tunes and Muppets, and not be forced to hear Elmo, Barney or Teletubbies in the background.
The only real choices for mplayer, once you add the third-party apt source, are for which cpu you want it optimized for, so there is definitely a lack of choices there.
I did try Gentoo for awhile. I had a hell of a time getting it installed in the first place. I also spent about a year using Sorcerer/SourceMage. I finally went to Debian for one simple reason; I was sick of waiting for everything to compile. Especially when the frequent KDE/Mozilla/X updates came around. [This was before Firefox]. Mozilla was taking almost a full day [24 hours] to compile [plus download time], and I never really saw any noticable speed increase. With Debian, I have the download time, and 30 seconds later it is installed.
Don't get me wrong, I do sometimes miss some of the configurability of having the source based distro, but for the most part, I just want to get my update/install done with asap so I can get on with my work/play.
Did you know bitchx can be compiled to use gnome? when the debian maintainers compile bitchx for you, they decide whether or not to include it. you don't have the choice.
Funny, I seem to have a choice in my debian system [sarge]. ------ ender@lucy32:~$ apt-cache search bitchx bitchx - Advanced Internet Relay Chat client bitchx-dev - Header files for BitchX bitchx-gtk - GTK interface for BitchX bitchx-ssl - SSL support for BitchX ------
Not that there aren't packages that are limited in choice, but I haven't run into any since I started using debian on my desktop system a few years ago. [Former Slackware user] A simple "sudo apt-get install bitchx-gtk" installs it with the gnome interface if that's what I desire.
Um... you are aware that the sun itself is a giant nuclear reactor, right? Besides even if there WAS the possibility that this could be an issue, there's nothing that says you have to fly straight into the sun. Just send it up out of the ecliptic and down towards the 'top' of the sun.
Just an FYI, there have been an ungodly number of posts in the ubuntu-users list regarding this. That splash-screen/wallpaper combo has been removed as the default. It is still in the distro, but is no longer what is displayed when you install.
I'm currently using Ubuntu on my main desktop, as well as testing it on a G4. It's ok, it has a lot of potential, but does need a lot of work. Plus, I've not cared much for Gnome since they stopped using enlightenment...
I see where you going with this, but suing IBM is a bit pretty much david vs. golithy except no ones cheering david. IBM has a fairly large patent portfolio on there own and if you decide to sue IBM for infinging on one of your patents not so supprisingly IBM will be able to find quite a few patents vague enough to have you violating them. Not to mention IBM is in a relatively profitable position and has a rather sharp legal team so they unlikely to be scared by such tactics.
Well, that's all pretty much true, and great in theory. But it doesn't stop stupid companies like SCO from suing IBM. So who's to say that Kodak doesn't have a death-wish as well?:)
Sun should have stood up to them and slammed them to the wall.
Sun tried to stand up to them, and a judge/jury decided they were wrong. This part was just them accepting that and settling since if this is a settlement for circa $100mil it would probably cost them more than that to appeal.
On a side note, I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand, I work for a company that helped Kodak win this case, so we are happy that Kodak did win. On the other hand, I'm bummed that I had a semi-direct hand in helping them win this frivilous infringement case.:(
Ok genius, I'll take your troll bait... There's only 10 of us in the office. I know exactly what the boss needs her to do, I know exactly what software she uses for work purposes, and anything extra she uses for non-work purposes is not my concern.
Besides, I asked her directly, "What parts of Outlook do you use?" She replied that she only used email and the tasks. And I wasn't trying to get rid of Office. I know darned well she needs office. But she doesn't need Outlook. She doesn't even use the extra email functions of outlook that might need re-setting [filters, folders etc]. Just a pop email account. She reads the mail, writes the occasional mail. That's it. [Plus tasks, which as I mentioned I was looking for a good alternative for.]
I agree that Thunderbird could use a little more functionality. Or better yet, another Mozilla app that ties in seamlessly, but doesn't bloat Thunderbird if you don't need it.
As for new people not liking Thunderbird, the other person I introduced it to likes it. Every couple weeks I ask her how it's going with Thunderbird. Usually she says great. Today I asked and she said she didn't like the way it sorts when you click on the columns because she always sorts by Sender to find emails from a certain person. Then when she tries to sort back to the way she likes it [by date], it always does the reverse first so she has to click it twice.
I showed her that she only has to type the persons name in the search field at the top, and it will show her only that persons emails. She tried it and exclaimed, "Oh cool! That's way better than the old way!" [as she had done in Outlook]. So Thunderbird does have some advantages.
Hehe, cute. Unfortunately, the ONLY things she uses in Outlook are email and the tasks. Thunderbird's email functionality is not really different from Outlook [Pop3 only]. And she has very little real work that needs to be done using IE as well. Firefox isn't that much different from IE. [Oh no, they're called Bookmarks instead of Favorites, how will I ever adjust?!? ].
Why do you feel its appropriate to force your own software choices onto others?
Oh, I dunno, maybe because I'm partially responsible for the security of systems that have a lot of sensitive legal information on them? Unfortunately, I have part of the responsibility, but none of the ability to enforce any policy. Quite frankly, the thought of how easy it is for Windows to be compromised [just go to a website with a jpg, open an email], scares the crap out of me. I'm just trying to eliminate as many vulnerabilities as I can. Unfortunately, we have too many programs that won't work in Linux/Wine to even have some of our ppl move to Linux. [Even I'm stuck using Windows:( ]
I didn't even get as far as showing them linux. I work in a small office [10 ppl]. I had to re-install Windows XP for our receptionist. I installed Firefox and Thunderbird to replace Outlook and IE. I've been getting people one at a time to try it out, to see how it goes over and I thought since I was setting up her machine from scratch, I might as well try her next. She wanted nothing to do with it. She used it for half a day, and wanted Outlook/IE back. The only functionality that was "lost" was a task-list from Outlook, which I was in the process of looking for a standalone replacement for, but she decided she hated Firefox/Thunderbird. She didn't really have any valid reasons, just some mumbling about the web-page colors not showing up right [uh, yeah whatever].
The other person I have using Firefix/Thunderbird has no problems at all. She likes it and has come to love the Tabbed browsing.:)
So you will definitely find people who are against ANY sort of changes. God-forbid they have to learn anything new.
So, if I were a terrorist, I think I'd start using "Tom Ridge" as pseudonym. Then I'd laugh my ass off when the head of Homeland Security can't get on a plane, and they won't tell him why.:)
Or I wonder if they've got an "immunity" list, so that even if there WAS a terrorist going around as Tom Ridge, the name would never be put on the list. That would be just as good!
Well as of the summer of 2003, the credit union I worked for still used a 486 running DOS and a manually dialed 9600bps modem to connect to fedline. The resulting floppy was then used to ftp the data to from my workstation to the main host [server].
Of course, there WAS a hardware crypto-card in the machine. If it got turned off [soft-booting was ok], it required 3 top level executives to come in and enter the keys to get the machine to boot up again.
It was an interesting combination of old-skool and new tech...
The visa check-card transactions were also fed through a manually dialed 9600bps modem.
I'm sorry that you feel that something is crap just because it made it to the mainstream. I base my likes/dislikes on the quality of the music and the lyrics and not whether or not it's mainstream. And "fake whiteboy blues crap" huh? Just because they're white, they're fake? Does that include SRV and Led Zeppelin mentioned above [and if you think Zep wasn't 90% blues in the beginning, you obviously didn't listen to their 1st 2-3 albums]. Sure their music is a bit different than Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray or Hubert Sumlin, but that doesn't automatically mean it sucks.
It's really annoying when people come across as "ooh, I'm so elite because I don't listen to mainstream music and yet I have to post anonymousely". Sure I've come across some good indie music [for instance, that's how I found Muckle Flugga], but face it, 99% of indie music is just as crappy, if not worse than that same 99% of mainstream music.
You say you used to "do that too"...If that is the case, and indie music were really that much better, you could have just said "Hey, I used to listen to that stuff too, and now check out the other cool shit I've found that isn't released on major labels." But no, you just slam me because you feel that I do what you used to do because you haven't the ability to do anything constructive. You just send out whiney "I'm better than you because I don't listen to mainstream" trolls.
That's why I avoid a lot of indie music, I don't want to have too much in common with elitist twits such as yourself.
And maybe you should look up the definition of 'eclectic'.
