Most of the "cool" tech companies seem to lean left so this isn't too surprising. Slashdot is also left-leaning. I'm not really a trump fan but I am tired of the constant barrage of leftist ideals. Based on the results of this recent election I'm far from the only one.

The idea that wealth is correlated to productivity is flat out easy to prove wrong. The hardest working people in the world are invariably the poorest.

Economics 101: productivity != hard work. Economic progress in a free market is not a zero sum game.

  5. Good luck getting one on Raspberry Pi Zero Gains Camera Support, Keeps $5 Price (engadget.com) · · Score: 1

The US supplier network for pi zero sucks. It's pretty hard to get one from Adafruit and even if you do, they rip you off on shipping (last order was $12 UPS ground shipping that took almost two weeks to arrive - fail). They use a bunch of their inventory on the 'starter pack' kits to sell a bunch of overpriced stuff you generally don't need. Despite their status in the community, I really dislike dealing with adafruit and I get suspicious when I hear things from the pi foundation about 'exclusive deals' with these lame retailers.

  6. ISIS is really not that scary on After ISIS, Americans Fear Cyberattacks Most (theatlantic.com) · · Score: 2

Not for us in the US anyway. The best they can hope for is to make a few 'lone wolf' attacks here and there. It's an interesting psychological phenomenon that people are so afraid of something bad happening at random, despite the odds of it happening being incredibly small (and dwarfed by other more common things such as auto accidents).

'Stingrays' are a classing MITM attack and could be prevented using certificates and a chain of trust in much the same way as we use on the internet.

  8. Totally agree. There is so much red tape for everything these days. While I realize there is some public interest in the safety regulations they also serve to protect existing infrastructure and people who have a vested interest in it. Sure gasoline is flammable but it's not like the average vehicle isn't already driving around with 10-30 gallons of it. Setup a proper tank and pumping equipment and it'll be totally safe.

Updrafts can go extremely high. How high depends on various atmospheric conditions but 1700 is nothing even on a bad day. Just look at a cumulus cloud and chances are you're seeing the top of an "updraft". I've seen bags and misc light trash while flying around 12,000 ft before.

Solar panels are rated by how much power they produce under full sunlight, usually defined as 1000 w/sq meter. Hence the rating in GWs. The actual amount of power output (GWHrs) would depend on mounting location and how much sun they happen to see throughout the year.

It's true most AVGAS is still leaded. But aviation fuel is a tiny percentage of the total gasoline burned, and it's mostly being dispersed above the ground so by time you get a whiff of it, it's probably too diluted to do any harm.
