When oh When are you idiots going to check your sources! Gore never said that he invented the internet. He said that he took the lead (along with many others) in making it possible. Ever wonder where DARPA gets its' funding? Think a Senator might have something to do with that?
Manyt of the posters here talk about throwaway passwords for here (like mine). So it would be interesting to see a report, next week sometime, on how many of us actually followed Taco's advice.
I wonder if Stephen King's publishers are similarly upset that people get his books out of libraries rather than buying their own copies
They are, there have been several statements from publishers lately that they are displeased with people reading (dead tree) books without paying for them i.e. by getting them from libraries or from a friend after the friend has read them. That is why publishers like the idea of e-books.
To all those who are saying variants of the above: Ben Franklin said something along the lines of "Those who would sacrifice neccessary liberty to secure temporary safety deserve neither"
Excellent book. One of the heroes is a biologist/hacker and one of the villians is an ecologist/hacker. The biologist/hacker runs a filter that explicitly lets through some data she wouldn't be interested in/agree with.
Also, in the future posited by Brin, there is no privacy. Possibly the most worrying aspect of the future shown book, because the most likely.
My father worked for a branch of DOD in the mid-eighties and one of the contractors flat out refused to use Ada. Given the choice of doing without a product that only they made, or using C, the DOD went with C.

'Forget the Matrix. It's time for the Grid'
Those of us who've taken math know that a grid is a matrix.

You didn't hear about the billionaire in Redmond who's secretly supporting Debian? Apparently he wants more "innovative" features in it.

Just install an overclocked server farm on the far side of the moon, and watch how fast they go in the insane temperatures.
Especially during the day when it hits 200+ in the full sunlight!

There's a point - I wonder if a patent could be contested on the basis that it is anti-competitive
No, patents are intended to be anti-competetive. That's why they expire.
