It's not worth the effort. We need a template. Something about the obviousness of the theses. The nice bit of self promotion at the top of it. etc. etc.

  2. clever little hack on Email Turns Thirty · · Score: 4, Interesting
That's how the Times describes it, as a "clever little hack".

  6. handicapped on What Accessibility Options Exist for Unix? · · Score: 2
I have a handicap that doesn't interfere at all with using a computer. I'm partly blind in one eye (vision is 20/200 (the other eye is 20/20)), the result of a playground disagreement many years ago. I can't see stereo very well, but then, the computer screen isn't 3-d, is it? So while I am handicapped enough to fill a spot on the EEOC forms, I'm not handicapped enough for it to interfere with my work, or to require accessibility features.

Plays hell with my ability to play, however. Try swinging a bat at a baseball with one eye closed. Or hammering nails.

  7. This comes under the heading of... on Gibson Guitars and Ethernet · · Score: 1

Why didn't I think of this. It isn't that difficult to do. Basically, you need an audio digitizer on the guitar. Connected to an embedded processor that will wrap the samples in tcp/ip packets. Connected to an ethernet port. If you don't mind a big box hanging off the side you could do it with 3 PC-104 cards. (The digitizer, cpu card, ethernet card.)

  8. West Nile on The Future of Ideas · · Score: 2, Insightful
They aren't spraying DDT to kill West Nile. It's malathion, IIRC, which is not harmful to birds. Or, at worst, is less harmful to birds than West Nile.

The guy who invented post-it notes did it while he was on the job at 3M. All the work was done at work, using 3M's equipment and supplies. He's never complained.

You seem to be complaining that companies own the products that we are producing for them and for which we are paid.

I'm with Comcast, in Reston VA, and I did not want to go back to dial up. Comcast has been great. Always high speed, and I've never had any downtime. I downloaded RedHat 7.2 from linuxberg in < 1 hour over Thanksgiving weekend. (I'm not sure exactly how long it took, started download, got lunch, after lunch it was done). And they are fairly linux friendly. They don't "officialy" support it, but they use basic DHCP, so it's easy to connect. Just remember the "-h HOSTNAME" switch.

Why? Mandrake is aimed straight at the Desktop. RedHat aims at Windows NT users. The BSD's aim at unix sysadmins who Know What They Are Doing. Open/Free/Net don't need a User Friendly graphical install interface because their current interface is friendly to the users they aim at.

There was lots of media coverage before the laws were passed. Front page stories in the Washington Post, NY Times, etc. The problem was that this law (USA-PATRIOT) went through in a few days, rather than the 3 or 4 months it usually takes most laws to go through.

Still time to do something about it though. Write (e-mail, letters may take awhile) your Representative and Senators. Get your friends to write. If enough voters object the law will be modified or repealed.
