How about the large software development base in Utah? Remember Novel and Word Perfect? At one time they were both in the top 10 largest compaines paying taxes in Utah.

MS (thanks in part to the large number of good schools in the state) has has a large number of software startups. Many of them went on to do things that were bundled with Windows and are now no more.

How about Microware in Iowa. One time the size of M$ but with stable products. They happen to be be growing but aren't in the same business they had been in which would put them in the cross hairs of M$. They do make software for set top boxes and thats clearly an area that M$ is using its traditional methods to get into.

How about Datastorm in Missouri. Once M$ bundled a comms package they lost all their business. Ever look into the details of them including hyperterm? No one in the industry had a choice and M$ used their monopoly to their advantage.

I'm sure other people could supply quite a list of compaines that were rolled over my M$.

The M$ monopoly is costing jobs all over the US (and the world).

  9. For thouse who will write letters on U.S. Logo-Free TV Broadcast Organizations? · · Score: 1

US broadcast can only advertise a for a small percentage of the airtime. A volation of that is can result in fines. So far the FCC (and the courts) have not decided that the bug is advertising. If the FCC gets enough letters, they will have no choice but to decide if the things are adverts. I still think a better choice would be to go after a broke PBS station saying they said they don't advertise when they do so you would like your donation back. If done in court, it would set a precident that the FCC would most likly follow. Anyone want to donate a few grand to a PBS station and then sue them?

  12. It could have been fixed but it won't ever be. on Massachusetts Holds Out On MS Case · · Score: 2

Right now there is only one company selling operating systems (keep in mind that every one else is in the hardware game, owned by M$ or just selling media).

The only way to stop this is to force that company into two or more parts (since they have two or more OS's). According to judge Jackson, this is the worst case since Standard Oil. Remember what happend there? The company was chopped into 20 small sections that each had to compete with themselves. Its why you can buy fuel from someone other than Standard Oil. I think that MS should be chopped into several smaller compaines based on their producs such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS XP, MS ME, Wince. The others such as the games can get thrown in with the rest or its own games company. The hardware section must not go to a company involved with the OS. I don't think the courts or the justace deptarment (or state's AG) undstand how deep the MS monopoly goes until they propose a settlement that fixes the core problems and I don't think they will. The only settlement proposals I have seen will do nothing to allow new compaines to compete aginst the now strong MS product lines and there aren't many of the old compaines left to try.

B/W cameras are very cheap (it cost more for the box and wire than the cameras) but recording the video is very expensive. Since I don't live in the land of low cost NTSC, I'm forced to go with PAL and the result is that a single VCR that can record for 24 hrs cost about as much as a well equiped PC. I can get a switch box for 4x the cost of the cameras that will switch between 4 cameras.

So whats the best option? How many vidoe capture cards can I put in one cheap PC? What compression can I use? I suspect if I use a multplexor then the compression will be very bad. How stable is video4linux with 4 cameras going at once?

Most spambots don't id themselves. A few do but most don't thouse that do won't for long if this info gets acted on.

What does work is building a nice static list of email addresses and names. Link to another page and have it full of the same info. Do this on serveral virtual servers and make sure the web bots can find it.

You can also be nice to the real search engines and tell them not to visit you spam traps and since robots.txt is offten used by the spam bots, telling google not to search that page works out good for both sides of the spider wars.

The next thing is to lock down your mail program once it detects any of the spam traps. There are serveral good ways of doing this based on how you pay for bandwidth. Two of the best options are either play dead with the connection or return a "user mailbox is full". Both of these tie up resources on the spamers end. The other choice is reject 99.99% of the mail and hope they pull your domain out of their lists for being full of junk.

I run @abnormal.com which tends to sort near the top, has lots of bougus addresses and has been running spam traps for years. Everyday I get hit by spamers that have sorted addresses.

One thing to keep in mind is that most bots are run by people only selling lists, not the spamers. Because of that there is no direct link between the searching bots and the mail host that spams latter.

I wonder if its its time to make a RBL like thing that is just for poisoned addresses.
