    I'll vote with my wallet : I'll just watch OTA channels to keep up with local news (we have only 4 OTA channels here). Read more books. More time for my hobbies : country dance (line and partner), gardening, house renovations, ... Found new hobbies...

  5. If you don't like what the company you work for do, just leave. This is what I did with my last employer (dubious ethics). I'm not the only one who did it. Many seniors and intermediate++ left the company. Now they only have a bunch of juniors and unmotivated employees and they have many problems with projects delivery (late, buggy, ...). Since then, I'm a freelancer and I'll never go back.

    Create a new email alias each month/year/... ex: receipt2019@mydomain.com, receipt201903@mydomain.com... At the end of each month/year, archive your emails and delete your alias. This way, you will not have to share your "real" email to every store and spam will bounce when you delete the alias.

    Ok. Here in summer (late spring to early fall), they collect garbage every week and recycling every 2 weeks. .

    Best employees will leave and worst ones will stay there because they are protected by the union. I saw this millions times in my career (not just in IT). I'm a freelancer for 9 years now (25 years of experience) and companies contract me to fix the mess of unmotivated "I'm here for to pay/conditions" unionised employees.

    One diesel truck for the garbage; one diesel truck for the recycling. Need a landfield for garbage. Need big installations for recycling (people to sort the recycled trash, machines to process it, diesel lift, ....). Another trucks to take sorted recycled stuff and transport it somewhere else. Explain to me where is the real environmental gain?

    Using a mass-market OS (Windows) for industrial machinery is just as stupid as using a toothpick to open a food can : not the right tool.

  20. I'm in the process of moving out all "mass social networks/surveillance" (FB, Twitter, Google, ...) off my personal life. I pay Fastmail to host my own email domain (I don't want to maintain an email server). I'm going to be part of the Fediverse. I have an hosted VPS where I'm about to install my Matrix node, my ActivityPub servers (Mastodon, Pleroma, PeerTube, PixlFeed, ...)... I'll host MY data and share what I want with who I want.

    I know not everyone can do it but you can use one of many nodes available and create an account on it. There is thousands of it built by community interest : developers, art, music, (left | right | top | bottom) wings politics, family groups, ... If you don't want to host yourself, you have choice.

    - Opened database port on the internet (I suppose)
    - Probably weak user/password (ex: mongo/mongo)
    - They sent spams to verify email. Unsollicited emails are illegals in many countries (at least in Canada)

    If you want "polished" UI, you can use Linux Mint distribution with Cinnamon (Mint 19.x is based on Ubuntu 18.04).

    Personally, I prefer XFCE based desktop because it's lighter. I care more about stability/lightness than how it's look.
