  1. Strong point of Wikipedia on Does Wikipedia Suck on Science Stories? · · Score: 1

If we only endeavor to seek a minimal grasp of a subject, Wikipedia would be failing us. There are a lot of things that I don't already know when reading a science subject on that site, but thats where all those little helpful links in the article come in handy. It takes you around to the other articles that explain the things you don't already understand. Then the next time you read an article with similar supporting evidence you can skip over the links you already covered. I see the author at Wired maybe not really gasping the idea of why people should use wiki's.

  2. UPS positive attitude on Forbes Lists Top Corporate Hate Web Sites · · Score: 5, Insightful

I like the way this was PR handled from UPS for the website UnitedPackageSmashers.com:

    Company Says:
"We do know of the site. Because we live in a free society, people have the right to their opinion, and we recognize that people will use the Internet to voice their opinion. We believe that customers can get much more valuable and accurate information from our site."

Thats much better than a legal notice claiming a violation of some act, and gives them a leg up in my book. On a side note I wonder how forbes has/would handle something like forbessucks.com.

  3. BZFlag in the distribution on Fedora Core 3: Worth The Upgrade? · · Score: 1

You could grab this before from one of the extra yum repositories, but I think there will be alot more players for this awesome game now that its bundled with fedora core. Quite possibly the best decision made by the developers.

  4. Not too neutral on Microsoft Codec Required For Blu-Ray Players · · Score: 1

"Microsoft will maintain its neutral position in supporting the emerging high definition video formats"

The last statement of that article seems totally against the grain of its subject matter. It is backed by HP apaprently too which now just came out with a linux laptop. Maybe we can hope to see one of these companies step up and offer a way of support on linux? If not I sense more antitrust litigation in the near future.

  5. Re:Debian... on Debian Aims For September Release Date · · Score: 0

The debian installer is not out of date, infact its one of the easiest. The debian installer's kernel is however wildly out of date, and you have to jump through hoops to get a reasonably new network card up and running on the net install. A good direction for debian to move is to release an updated installer ISO every few months with the latest drivers or a new kernel.

  6. Some case mods on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: 0

I once took a motherboard and mounted it on the back of a toy truck, wedged in some playdough so that it would hold, then draped some twine over it like ropes to make it look like a government sci-fi transport convoy. I don't have a picture of that, sorry. One time my friend and I crudely squished the motherboard, hard drive, and cdrom inside of a castle greyskull playset. On both of those casemods I had to underclock the processor because of heat issues.

  7. Slackware with default install on The Best Linux Distro for a New User? · · Score: 0

I would not have recommended this to new users up until about 3 weeks ago, when I installed version 9.1 for the first time. It has changed quite a bit from what I remember, and if you perform the install with the default options, it will give you quite a bit including java runtime and alsa by default. I haven't looked at fedora core 2 yet, but you definately didn't get this with fedora core 1 or debian. The one problem is that the sound is still muted by default, which could throw some people off. But other than that, it has those two really big things people want in the default install, and if they choose to use gnome or kde, they will have a rich windows compatable desktop ready to use. Also there is a very simple and new user friendly book/manual

  8. My company bought a few of these on Finally A Major-Brand Desktop With Linux, Not Windows · · Score: 0

We bought about 15 of these to start a linux desktop rollout. They came with mandrake 9.somthing. They have some kind of onboard broadcom network adapter that isnt recognized in other versions of linux installs like redhat and debian. So you will have to get a module or new kernel for one of those distros. Other than that they are seemingly nice little machines. We ended up just using the mandrake version that came with it.

  9. Squishdot on Zope on Innovative Uses for a Computer Classroom? · · Score: 0

I think the Squishdot product on Zope makes for a pretty nice weblog. It has nice easy control setting for allowing others to moderate and post things. I have never used slashcode, its probably the same way.
