i'm not a microsoftie... open source all the way, its just i've been around and read all his history.

him and paul allen were both geniuses.

one thing that impressed me was he wrote a BASIC interpretter straight through, and it ran correctlly on the very first attempt. hopefully that will qualify for a piece of code he wrote.

sure the basic language is fairly weak, but it opened the doors for so much, and got me started coding (like most of you probably i started in apple ][ basic... a dying breed of coder)

and IIRC, he is now chief software architect and gave up his marketing / business role. so in some sense i would bet he at LEAST has input on the code even if he isn't typing it all in himself. 90% of coding is the design anyways and the rest is just typing it in.

probably because some channels don't broadcast the correct info, some don't broadcast any info, and some think they are too hip to actually say whats on, rather they just put their call letters in the show title section (eg MTV, VH1)

my TV (sanyo 32") has used this info for about 3 years now, and i find it very useful on the channels that make use of it, but many don't.

NBC is especially funny, i think they only have 1 or 2 live satellite feeds, so most NBA games they broadcast live show up as "Saturday Night Live" because some genius forgot to switch it on the transmitter.

comparing a novelist to a programmer is fair. comparing a surgeon to a programmer is not fair.

in either case, their is more DEMAND for programmers than novelists or surgeons. Writing a novel is easier to a novelist, doing surgery is easier to a surgeon and coding is easier to a programmer. common sense. which is easier to learn? is that your question?

writing a novel requires a creative skill that is not obtainable to some. programming requires a problem solving mindset and desire to learn not obtinable to some. surgery requires steady hands, concentration and much schooling.

are there more people that qualify to learn how to program. yes. does that mean it is easier? who knows.

the problem with novel writing and coding is you spend the VAST amount of your time siting in front of a CRT staring at text and altering it to your satisfaction. THIS GETS VERY REPETITIVE! surgeons are walking (running) around and dealing with things in the real world that affect peoples lives. if they don't perform, people die. that is motivation enough. if there was someone put in my cube, and if i was told that they would be killed if i didn't perform, and their family was waiting in a conference room down the hall, I WOULD PERFORM.
