This appeared on Slashdot a while ago.

The general premise is that has things move towards looking more life like, at a certain point they end up in the "uncanny valley" if they aren't perfect. This is where things look real enough, but the brain sees something wrong with it.

The human brain (and I'd suspect a lot of other species) is very good at picking up the "attractiveness" of something and a lot of it is subconcious. This obviously has developed for mating as a way of choosing the best possible mate. An example would be looking at a girl, being attracted to her and having no idea why i.e what specific features makes her attractive to you?. The counter example would be looking at another girl and finding her repulsive for one little flaw , say a limp or a mishapen nose, even though the rest of her is fine.

The reason cartoons and classic animation don't cause this is because we don't take them seriously.

Yeah it was bad, but the situation was pretty awkward anyway.

  6. Re:A new hope... on Star Wars Episode III : Birth Of The Empire · · Score: 1

Well look at who were part of the future empire there.

    Maul - yes.
    Dooku - yes.
    Fetts - sorta.

The first two movies set the stage for the Empire to rise. If the trade federation was supposed to be so evil, the empire never would of happened.

It wasn't easy to make prequels to the original trilogy, and given the circumstances I think Lucas did alright. Sure we could of done without Jar Jar, the Yoda seen and a few other things but overall they weren't bad. Some stuff I'll point out:

    - Anakin's acting. Considering that hes around the age of 16 and is told that not only is he a Jedi, but could be the most powerful ever, how do you think he should act? Of course hes going to be a cocky, whiny kid. I mean in Episode 2, Anakin was still just a kid. I particularly liked the scene with the Tuskens, I think that was excellently done. From the start to the end where hes talking to Padme and the Vader music plays in the background.

    - Anakin's haircut. The originals came in the 70s, 80s when that style was prominent. Again, this is part of why its so damn hard to make a prequel 15 years later. If you update their looks to modern style, then it does't seem to make sense unless in the SW universe year 2000 style came before year 1978 style.

    - About Tatooine. From what I've seen in other post, Tat has a dark force aura around it. I'm assuming this is from books or some other non-movie source. If this is true, then trying to track down some random force sensitive kid isn't going to be easy. Hell, Darth Maul had to use Seeker droids to find Padme, Qui-gon and Obi-won. Also remember that Tatooine is run by the Hutts, who have a distaste for the empire. I would think Palpatine would be smart enough not to start a war with Jabba while fighting the rebels.

In anycase, I enjoyed episode 1 and 2. I don't think they were overall any better than the older movies, but they do have memorable moments.

Well its not really from scratch. We already had AtheOS which most of us were already part of. I didn't do too much back then, more of just a lurker.
However, once Kurt abandoned AtheOS it seemed a shame to waste such a promising system.

From my own experience, I'm the manager of ABrowse our web browser. ABrowse is based off of KHTML which is a nightmare. I'm currently thinking of some drastic changes because I can't keep up with porting the new versions. I don't want to write a html render engine from scratch, but I am seriously thinking of stripping just about all the none render code out of it. So yeah, there is a point where sometimes it is better to start from scratch.

Well we don't have remote displays yet. However it is rather trivial to add that. As for right now, there are no great advantages over Linux or any of the BSDs. The the other hand, all of our developers listen to the users so any input is appreciated and noted.
We support just about everything that is posix compliant, so that pretty much covers the GNU tools.
As for building a system on top of already existant kernel, well thats what cosmoe is. Its the atheos api tuned to run beos apps, running on a linux kernel. Its kind of a kludge if you ask me. Our kernel while rather immature has some nice features. Its SMP friendly and is completely pre-emptive, the former not done by *BSD until recently and the latter being something Linux doesn't truly have.
