Does this mean that ISP's are also required to inform their customers when/if they are using equipment that could potentially be used to gather information on you?

It was actually cool to see how necessary advances espionage gave birth to the digital camera for transmission purposes... very cool.
I love seeing the *why* of how things came about as much as the *how*.
yes... I realize all that, my basic point being that a company telling you that a deal is not in the works is not a reliable statement... for the very reasons you sited.
They would be better off to keep quiet about *all* questions regarding mergers and acquisitions (as a corporate policy regarding public relations) rather than issuing a public falsehood.
i.e. when a question about a potential merger is put to them all they have to do is reply.. "It is our company policy not to discuss potential mergers and acqusitions in general for legal reasons"
Once this policy is firmly established people will cease to ask such questions. (knowing the answer they would get)..however when a company issues a false negative.. they lose credibility.
Look, I'm not saying that technology is a bad thing.. quite the contrary it happens to solve quite a few problems in the world... also creates quite a few.
Perhaps we're just not seeing eye to eye, but the basic premise of my argument was that technology has not added to our "humanity" as a whole. It has helped our civilization create great wonders, but the fundamental flaws in human nature are still there to corrupt the uses of the technology we create. Yes we can feed many people in the world and cure many diseases of the body. We can make mp3 players and make soda taste o' so great.. but technology cannot make us better people.. or can it? If technology can in fact change *us* then we better make damn sure we trust those administering the technology to change us... Because once that happens then the technology controls us rather than being controlled by us. We must have a clear course on where we decide to go, because from now on.. where we go changes who we are.
To which I must ask.. Has any technology actually saved humanity from the basic ills that have plagued it since it's beginning. Crime, war, hatred, hunger, all seem to be alive and well today despite our best efforts to bring Britanny Spears to the masses.
Using quotes is being *factual*. They denote that the term should be taken in context.
i.e. When the Iraqi's today said that they would launch a "non-conventional" attack...
If the news had just used non-conventional without quotes many would read it as a WMD attack.. since they used it in quotes it's taken with a larger grain of salt.
Quotes are used to prevent the exact kind of accusations you are making.
All bad things have small beginnings.. and even though it may be somewhat reactionary it is the duty of the people to point out the wrongs and just as importantly *what they can lead to*.. and sometimes the only way to show that is an end result...
Well upon *reading the article* the term "disappeared" was used by the family as a description of what happened to him.. hence the quotes in the title.
This was all a practical joke..!!
..and he said... "Watch them all support DRM now!..and he snickered again.."
It was Bill Gates snickering with a Linus puppet on his hand!
I said "Hey Bill! Whatchya doin'?"
....ads..... *sniffle*

I'll settle this once and for all...

..can rarely be trusted.
What company every admitted to a buyout or merger before it was actually announced.
Take Bungie for instance.. The very night before their buyout by Microsoft was announced, they were denying that there was anything even on the table.

I wasn't speaking of *literal* ills.. I was speaking of the ills of society.

hence comparing this to oppressive regimes.

Many people don't realize the little known fact that Gollum is actually a prehistoric Yoda!
..Get me off this crazy thing!

hehe.. I knew I'd get modded down for that one!
Americans would think I was bagging on them, and French would think I was bagging on them...
So much for stating facts in relation to history.
...so did the French during the Regin of Terror...
...two great tastes that go great together!
Anyone have a log and pass for the NY Times site!?

True, but LCD prices have dropped since you checked two years ago.
I may be wrong about this but didn't SETI's funding get cut BECAUSE they were getting so many free CPU cycles from their application.
I can imagine the use of laser turrets as protection against missiles, but I really can't see the use of a laser mounted in a 747.
Who said it was a defensive weapon..?
Seems more like something to have positioned to keep other missles from firing *after* we've launched ours.
I just went out and bought a 9700pro last f@#$c#ing night!
The karma of video cards one of the most constant forces in the universe!
Doesn't this bring Apple a little closer to the Apple music label?
Could another court battle come from this.
