If this is the case, I guess M$ never thought that people could just loop a cable from the audio out to the audio in with their favorite audio-recording app running to capture it.
Now that there's some science brass disputing the claims of a M$'s lawyers, maybe the judge will stiffen the penalty.
If only "Add/Remove Programs" would allow me to DELETE Internet Explorer as opposed to only UPDATING Internet Explorer.
The only thing crippled here is the OS's interface. They've deliberately removed function from the user's perspective... I'm sure its possible to delete IE. And I'm sure its possible to automate it without deleting any otherwise necessary files. They just don't LET you.
I can't believe there has even been a DEBATE about MS being a monopoly or using their market share to influence and dominate not one industry (software) but THREE (also hardware and the internet-related stuff).
When will scientists stop being such shameless huckster opportunists, constantly promising lofty goals and wasting MILLIONS of dollars to give us nothing more than....
Actually, its more compatible than that - any PowerPC Mac running Mac OS 8.1 or higher. Basically any Mac made after 1995 running an OS from '97. Not bad legacy support, eh?;) its just a shame it doesn't work on 68K machines. I've love to be at my G4 using Mac OS 8.1 on my 25MHz Quadra660;)
Just last week, Apple released Remote Desktop, an app like VNC with some other benefits, such as administration, application removal/installation, file copies, etc. to up to 250 other computers AT ONCE. You can also view/control any of the computers with full logging of actions, etc. Very powerful app. Right now, its only Mac-to-Mac, but I'm sure it will be expanded in the future to include support for other OSes as well. It has lots of different settings to optimize performance over various types of network connections, and of course has a beautiful Apple interface. Each instance of the app can handle up to 6000 computers separated into groups of 250 each.
Sounds perfect for schools, organizations, etc. Just think - my company could install/remove any software to ALL of our macs, worldwide, from ONE COMPUTER at HQ. Pretty nifty.
I completely agree... good FireWire PCI cards feature an internal FireWire port anyway. I've been waiting for native FW internal drives instead of the usual ATA-to-FW conversion external boxes. As of now, I've been using a short cable connected to the internal FW port with an open front bay to plug in an external and nestle it inside the box to save space. But I'd rather have a nice FW drive array internal....

This movie rules, but I must say, I really miss the emotional-sociological take on the zombie genre that George Romero has. His Night, Dawn, Day series is just a classic, the movies being more about the people breaking down under duress than the zombies and gore (but OH! those Zombies and Gore!).
And I love the first Return of the Living Dead (produced by John Russo, who co-authored Night of the Living Dead w/ Romero). The sequels to that film sucked, but the first one was a very effective horror comedy with some nice twists on the zombie theme (intelligent zombies, no sure-kill tactic)
While Resident Evil is a great rush, it just doesn't have the substance that the Romero films do. If you wanna REALLY be scared of zombies, get the DVD of Day of the Dead, lock yourself in a basement, and turn off all the lights. FRREEEAAAAKKKYYYY! ----------------------
Ah, this is great. The next time we uproot a culture's main food crop (as the UN did when inducting several African countries in the early 60's), bomb the bejeezus out of an already beleagured nation (as we are seeing right now in Afghanistan), or flex our muscle in foreign lands to keep our oil supply rolling (as we have been doing for decades in the Middle East), we won't have to bother with the nagging threat of insurgency against our grandiose dreams of consumer-heaven through global slave-wage labor! And at such a reasonable cost, you have to wonder, why do we bother with ANY aid programs at all? Let's just dump ALL of our money into researching technology to ensure our stranglehold on the entire world's economy and the military might to quash any dissidents without so much as a blip on a radar screen?
If you couldn't see the sarcasm dripping off that post, I'll translate: Just another waste of money that will keep very intelligent men working on weapons of destruction and subjugation instead of solving REAL problems, will ensure the government's popularity with a populace that is ever-swooning over the latest techno-garbage that allows us to rape pillage and steal the world over, and it keeps the army blokes happy with new toys and a whole new reason to send young men who don't know any better to die for something as arbitrary, meaningless, and sad as "their country."
Give up your pointless nationalism. Decry the insane amount of money being spent on such unnecessary and ludicrous investments. If you don't want people dying, don't start wars. If you don't want people being nerve gassed, don't make someone want to use them. If you want people to stop attacking you, stop provoking them. Our money and resources would be better spent HELPING these countries and their citizens rather than HINDERING their growth and development, thereby pissing them off to the point of bombing us.
That's probably not far from the truth:( I feel bad because you just KNOW the US would "ask" Australia to allow us to set up massive military posts and missle silos throughout the interior of the continent to deal with such an "uprising."
Personally, I'm just tired of it. The entire always-war-usually-about-religeon thing. They can all blow me. If they can't keep it to themselves they all just need to shut up and stay out of each other's way, cuz they only people they're harming are the ones they purport to save. bastiches.
I hear that. I look around at all the brain-dead breeders living out their shallow, cathode-driven lives in their webs of obsolete religious dogma and personal shortcomings and just think to myself how cloning is the polar opposite of where science should be going.
We should be doing research on how to completely eliminate people from reality. I mean REMOVE ENTIRELY - their memories, interactions, everything. And it should be a small device that fits on my keychain and can be pointed at huge crowds of people at, i dunno, a britney spears concert or something.
"And in other news, it seems like 60,000 people vanished from the Baltimore Area last night, but no one could recall anyone they knew actually BEING there."
Please keep in mind that the right-wing government that we have now is very firmly entrenched themselves in radically fundamentalist thinking. George Sr. regularly donated funds to the likes of Pat Robertson, Falwell, etc., supporting folks like Rev. Donald Wildman, helped out groups like the Eagle Forum (who belived that mathematics was dangerous to children because they teach a child that there are no absolutes, and once a child learns there are no absolutes, sooner or later, they turn to crime and drugs!).
The American gov't is NOT succumbing to the radical beliefs of a few citizens. it is forwarding its OWN radically fundamental belief system. A lot of the nutjobs running the country right now SINCERELY BELIEVE that we are in the end times. A few of the more outspoken members of the aforementioned groups who have ties in gov't have stated that it is their calling on Earth to HELP BRING ABOUT THE END TIMES TO SPEEDILY BRING JESUS BACK TO EARTH.
We are not dealing with a few radical citizens. We are dealing with a highly organized, highly motivated, and insanely rich regime who honestly belive that they are the chosen few.
is that Apple had been using the slogan "Rip. Mix. Burn." when it introduced the CD-RW iMacs, complete with a contingent of musicians ranging from Barry White to Smashmouth to Propellerheads and tons of others all playing up how great it is to be able to take your CDs and make custom mixes. In fact, I'm willing to bet that you'd be hard pressed to find an artist that has not, at some point, made a mix CD. It's already been shown that the record companies have been skimping the artists on royalties for the new Napster-like service that is licensed... when will they realize that they're not necessarily ENTITLED to make billions of dollars a year each, and that the masses will do whatever we want to do?
If these ludicrous copyright measures actually go into effect, and all of our movies and cd's are made proprietary and married to special hardware, what will happen to the companies who have been making bank off of CD-RW component and disc sales? Will Roxio have to recode Toast or Easy CD Creator to not copy any commercially pressed CD?
Personally I'll be wiling to bet that even if this DOES get passed, we won't see a fervent enforcement. 3/4 of the cops out there are swapping music i bet. It'll be like getting a speeding ticket, and also be as common (and EXPECTED) as speeding. Not that that means its OK if it DOES pass, it'll be a seriously blow to individual rights, but I don't think they'll put anybody in prison for it.
I certainly hope that Amiga can make a comeback in this area. I don't really see them displacing any PC's to be honest. Its been too long, they're way out of the game, and any massive steps forward they have made with the Amiga OS have been dwarfed by the accomplishments of Linux and Mac OS X.
This scenario makes a lot of sense, however. Back in the day when video hobbyists and professionals stood by their Amigas like tenacious terriers, Amigas really WERE on the forefront of things. Massive port expansion, insane A/V capabilities, fully protected memeory... Amiga really had their sh*t together. I think that a STB from Amiga would be an awesome product if they ever actually produce it, and put in the time/effort to make it as good as the A2000 and A4000 were.
