basically rules out everything except distributing the unaltered code without commercial gain.
To me, it really doesnt seem worth looking at with these kinds of restrictions. And presumably the mere fact of looking at the code could potentially lead to IP Violations if you were to develop a similar game.
I'll post the full licese as an AC after this message, but I'd like to here your views / interpretations of the license because it seems rather restrictive to me.
Well, I was just thinking along lines and wondering if Microsoft are guilty of this grand scale of FUD, as they have been with other operating systems in the past?
Im sure Microsoft will claim Linux userbase is insignificant. But it must be starting to make a dent in their revenue streams why else would they be taking it so seriously.
I wonder if the issue isnt wholly with Linux, but also with the prevalation of other Open Source projects such as OpenOffice and Apache etc.
What is the real demographic? And just how hard is it hitting the Redmond Army ?
Are they attacking Linux because it is a breeding ground for other free products?
Maybe its not linux itself , but the forward thinking free spirited community of open-ness they are so eager to destroy?
It seems to be basically saying that Apple have a clever pricing system. It has nothing to do with value for money. It does mention that the 15gb iPod Maxi, is only an extra 50 dollars (for an aditional 11gb). Its really quite a pointless article for me in terms of product. Its not going to convince me to buy an iPod mini either just because Apple have an inventive pricing scheme, cunningly designed to encourage would be buyers of flash based players to opt for the iPod mini version.
As much as I understand the underpinnings of that statement, You cant go around making comments like that. Only coding for mozilla/netscape is just as lazy and ignorant as the idiots that only code for IE. The trick is to build for compliance, have a nice clean design and test cross platform and cross browser as much as possible. Iron out the bugs and make comprimises (usually graphic design) where there are style problems you cant fix.(Degrade gracefully)
I will say though its about time people gave up on NS4.7 it is the browser from hell!
Standards compliance is always a good thing. But dont for a moment think that it means crossbrowser/platform compatibility. Nothing beats actually testing your application on at least the most popular browsers on the most popular platforms. More often than not you will have to make comprimises in order to achieve compliance and compatibility at the same time.
Its known for its Windows bias, but still has the other interesting geek related articles common to slashdot. To some of my geeky windows buddys , this is their slashdot. I personally find the windows bias rather annoying but then Im a linux guy!
I've recently discovered the joys of GTA Vice City. Its taken me a while because initially I was put of by the gratuity of violence. That kind of thing is not really my bag. However I do find the game highly entertaining and enjoyable due to the whole atmosphere of the game. I still get a personal feeling of guilt when I "accidentally" run someone over. There is a "lot" more to the game than just killing innocent passers by, and treating women badly.
Violence has been around forever, we all know this. For years people have complained that certain movies and videos have made people go out and do things they shouldnt. The usual argument is, to suggest that it should be the parents who control the exposure of children to these things. I agree very much with this standpoint, but the problem is there are a lot of parents out their who do not follow this logic. And quite often children find ways around their parents rules.
What can realistically be done to ensure that parents take the responsibility for exposure of unsuitable material to minors?
Id be worried if this hack allows pirated games to be played. What Sony did in releasing the PS2 Linux kit was a wonderful move and instilled in me a greater respect for them as a company.
There are a few people who are Sony haters on this list, and although they have done a few stupid things eg Net MD and their Magic Gate memory card. They do certain things right, the Linux Kit is just one of them.
I think it would be very sad if it were abused in such a way that enabled widespread piracy of PS2 games. Im as pro-open source, and the free software model as anyone else here. But i do beleive that the only way to sustain a video games based revenue is to sell boxes of games (with the exception of subscription based MMPORG) in the physical sense Games software just doesnt fit very well into the service model type revenue that we are accustomed to.
I dont care what people do with their X-boxen though. Every pirated X-box game==less money and more losses for billy boy ; less money for X-Box games studios. Which, will enevitably mean games studio's dropping the console. Look what happened to Amiga...
You have got to support the things you respect and ruin the things you despise.
But there is already a "no-modifications" (no-modchip) version of Linux that comes directly from sony. Granted its based on the 2.2 kernel and is loosely derived from an old version of red-hat. I suppose if there was some buffer overflow hack that required no modchip it would be cool. But it sure is nice to have PS2 branded mouse, keyboard 40gb hard drive etc in my ps2.
The monarchy in this country is about to go down shit alley anyway. Prince Charles is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the Death of Diana.
As much as like the idea of remaking classic games. Why dont we try and concentrate on innovating new ones? The Article says that remakes are good because they excite consumers with "names" they already know.
Thing with remakes, what we a really looking for is good gameplay back in the day it was far more important to have good gameplay than have great graphics. It was often the case that some games had great graphics but dire gameplay, other games had excellent gameplay but dodgy graphics. Those that got the balance just right were hits.
As far as remakes go though, a new Populous game would be much appreciated. And I also wish that David Braben would get the new Elite out the door. And has anyone ever done a Spy Vs Spy for the next generation ?
Isnt there already a patent on XML that says something along the lines of "Open Standard To enable information interchange between different platforms"
or "Method for describing the way data is stored and for containing data in such a way as to allow information to be easily interpreted in a standards compliant manner?
Well, cant it be done like it is in the real world?
It used to be the case that at any one time the amount of currency equalled that of the value of the gold reserves. I suppose times have changed since then but the system might just as well work. Throw in a stock market algorithm ala Elite (or perhaps more sophisticated one) and maybe people will get a bit more interested in the trade aspects of the game.
Just like the real world, its called forgery. Surely someone needs to invent some rules how to check if a player obtained virtual currency legitimately.
It looks like it , there is a /src/unix directory in there ... although im still rummaging through
In particular I noticed these prohibited acts...

A few comments, questions for discussion.

Why? First, if they were caught their companies would very quickly go out of business in the ugliest, most litigious (sp) and scandalous manner.
Microsoft sells Operating system with holes specially designed for Viruses.
Microsoft also sell Anti-Virus software to plug the aforementioned holes.
Go figure that one out... I think its called extortion.

I work with Microsoft products for a living, as well as for fun. ...
you sadist !
One has to ask, would this have been allowed under Saddam Hussain?

Look, if they dont provide the drivers and there are no open source equivalents, its quite simple... choose a different product.
I beleive there is a gentoo port in progress, and then of course there is Black Rhino.
Its a nice bit of kit to own and adds some extra functionality to the box.

Oh see him revel in this FUD of all FUDs...

The biggest problems with knoppix are (1) it uses kde instead of gnome.
Why is that a problem?
I dont get this!

I dont see how anything like this can get passed, and surely it would conflict
with any existing patents on the XML language itself?
