Suitable warning was given to the entire company. I am not their fucking babysitter. I should not have to track down each perpetrator and fire them.
They (more than one employee but less than all of them, of course) abused the privelege (not the right) of internet access at work, and so it was taken away. And if anyone at work asks why, that's what I'll tell them. And I'll let them give shit to the people who violated our policy.
Unfortunately at my company, and probably quite a few others, many employees seem to think that "occaisional personal business" is the same as "downloading porns and mp3s". This was the entire reason I supported my employers decision to block internet access.
If you dont like the word "forced" then dont use it, but the word "viral" is perfectly accurate to describe this portion of the GPL
Bull... If it were truly viral, it would infect your code, even if you didn't want it to. As it is, the only way for the GPL to take affect is if the author of the code decides for it to.

BeOS For Linux

· Score: 3, Interesting
I think you need to read the FAQ. This article is about BlueOS, which is, at the moment, a GUI for linux running on top of X11.
This article is not about OpenBeOS, which is the work in progress, rewriting bits and pieces of BeOS as open source, and aiming to use the NewOS kernel eventually.
Very bad (and insulting) analogy. When you program, and use another persons code, there is nothing preventing you from finding out what license the other code is using. Therefore, you know whether or not you're going to have to GPL your code even before you use that other persons code.
Obviously you can't always (if ever) be 100% sure that your sexual partner doesn't have AIDS.
The GPL IS viral. It INFECTS any derived works which must then be subject to the same license. For example if Sybase ported their database to Linux, they would then have to make the source code of Sybase available to anyone. Including Oracle !!! - You can see how this is a viral quality of the GPL license.
What?!?! So, since Corel ported WordPerfect to Linux, it must fall under the GPL? Are you really that stupid?
And, again, even if someone uses GPLed code in their product, forcing their code to fall under the GPL, it's still through their own actions. It did not happen unwillingly, like an viral infection.
In the case of Windows software, they just click 'I Agree' and in the case of Linux software, they actually have to be aware that there is a LICENSE.TXT file and go and read it.
Then it's still through their actions or inactions that their code is now GPLed. Again, there is nothing viral about the GPL.
I'm so sick of this "'viral' nature of the GPL" crap.
Let's get this straight, folks... A virus is something that one becomes infected with against ones will. This, in no way, resembles the GPL. The only way for your code to fall under the GPL is if you license it that way, or if you use GPLed code. In both cases, the decision is up to you.
Btw, the oss ds-xg drivers don't have the same quality or functionality as alsa..
Last time I tried Alsa from CVS (just a couple weeks back), that was definately not true. Alsa didn't support hardware midi support, which the OSS drivers support. In addition, the OSS drivers support both rear and front speakers. The OSS emulation in the Alsa drivers only supported one set on the Yamaha ds-xg cards.
The problem with your logic is that Slashdot is a free service. You don't really have any right to complain about it at all - let alone about something so trivial as story categories.
Bzzzt... Wrong.
We have the right to complain about anything we want to, free or not.
You've never met any of all those people that truly believes that email equals Outlook, the Internet equals Internet Explorer and computers in general equals Windows?
Of course I have... What does that have to do with whether or not you're forced to conform to what Outlook users do? If you get an e-mail you don't like, delete it. It's quite simple. No need to conform to anything but your own desires.
AFAIK, ATI has yet to release specs for the Rage 8500 to a dri-project developer!
Well that's interesting considering that during the IRC meeting of the DRI developers, it was decided that they'd first work on getting the Radeon 8500 up to speed with the other Radeon drivers and then focus on T&L.
I think you should do a little research next time before posting.
I assure you than on at least two of my machines, nVidia's drivers aren't just unstable, they're completely unusable. Regular lockups within minutes of starting any 3D app under Linux And it has been this way since their first release.
The original poster wasn't saying it didn't matter till it happened till him. He was saying that it isn't an issue till it happens to someone. Learn to read, please.

Letting people do these little things is far from bad for business.
Except that it can be quite bad when your client comes in, sits down at a computer, opens a folder and discovers the gigs of porn and mp3s.

the characters have no dimension, the plot is pathetic, and all the other nonsense in it and then yeah, you may have a movie in there somewhere.
Sounds like all anime to me.

And who cares how good the content creation software is if no one can view the bloody video?
Except that nearly everyone can view Quicktime videos. So what, exactly, is your point?
Dinivin
Heh... It was a bad analogy all around.
In fact, I did quite clearly see your point. But your point is just wrong. The GPL is not viral since a virus is something that one gets unwillingly.
The GPL, on the other hand, is something that can only affect code if the author of the code wants it to.

(and as a fan, I've seen the episodes he directed before which quite frankly sucked.)
Are you kidding? The baseball episode was probably the best episode of that season.

The BSD license is nothing more than a corporate license to steal other peoples work and make money off it.
Alright... That's just as bad as the "viral nature of the GPL" crap.
How can someone possibly steal something that's being freely given away?

Good for you. Not everyone has that option.

As he pointed out, Outlook users send people unreadable, non-standard attachments all the time.
Then how about just blocking e-mail messages with unreadable, non-standard attachments?
Why do non-Outlook users always have to be the ones to conform to what Outlook users do?
No one is saying they do, despite what you may think.
