  1. Re:That'll work well. on Academics Not Productive Enough? Sack 'em · · Score: 1

The practical result of the faculty who want to keep their jobs will simply be to spend less time preparing for the classes they teach, less time grading papers, less time interacting with students, and less time being teachers to make up for the added time spent researching and writing.

  2. Re:That'll work well. on Academics Not Productive Enough? Sack 'em · · Score: 1

That is somewhat true. But these are people who are also responsible for teaching and probably administrative tasks associated with their departments. Sure, they could sit around publishing a whole lot but where does that really leave their students who they are suppose to be teaching. "Oh, sorry Johnny, I don't have time to give you feedback on your paper, I'm busy publishing my own."

The difference between having a class with a tenured faculty member and an adjunct post-doc desperately trying to find a tenure track position is that the professor with tenure actually has the time to be an expert and pass on that expertise to students and, well, teach. The period between finishing a dissertation and having meaningful, gainful employment has become increasingly long and dependent on a expansive CVs; those people are the worst make for the worst teachers in the classroom because they are persistently preoccupied with their own petty academic dramas.

  3. iTunes not the Worst, but I'm still not buying. on Will People Really Boycott Apple Over DRM? · · Score: 1

I'm already on a permanent iTunes boycott; I won't buy digital media through iTunes at all simply because it is encumbered with DRM. Sure, I'll take advantage of their free downloads now and then, but owning the physical CD, a storage method that can always be relied on to re-install music after a hard drive or device failure, has always been more appealing to me.

iTunes though is fairly benign DRM. Users get to have five 'activations' and can globally reset all of their activations once a year. And while originally iTunes relied on users to know enough to backup their music, more recently any purchased song can easily be transferred from an iPod to a new computer.

While its understandable that any protest of DRM would include Apple's scheme, it is one of the least offensive iterations of DRM; perhaps if other media companies took direction from Apple, fewer users would be so offended by DRM.

I'll continue to enjoy Apple's free promotions, but ultimately buying the digital version just seems to risky, with or without DRM.

  4. An Apple Netbook likely an Oversized iPhone on How About an iPhone OS Or Android-Based Netbook? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think its likely that any touchscreen tablet from Apple would more or less simply be a larger version of the iPhone/Touch, but with similar hardware on the inside. This would have several huge advantages for Apple in terms of a business model.

Something like a 7 inch iPod Touch would provide most of the same functionality as a netbook, but have the advantage of a built in App store that Apple already tightly controls and has a monopoly on. The digital keyboard would save space and size, but a screen twice as large as the current iPhone/Touch would allow for greater usability. Such a product also follows with Job's claim that the iPhone is already a netbook.

I think any Apple entry into the Netbook market would rely heavily on the iPhone OS, especially since the whole idea over the iPhone OS is that its really, deep down at its core, Mac OS.

  5. Linksys has failed me, Apple has been fine on Why Do We Have To Restart Routers? · · Score: 1

I had a Linksys router at home that needed rebooting two or three times a month on average. I switched it with an Apple Airport Extreme, and since then I haven't needed to reboot (though it rebooted during a software upgrade). Its been seven months since I upgraded and couldn't be happier. Also have a Linksys in the office; I reboot that one about twice a week.

  6. This might work with a little help on Universal Offers iPod-Resistant Music · · Score: 1

This will work if the hacker community can strip the DRM out of the files with an easy to use software tool that the mass consumer can implement. iPods have what, 75% marketshare? So why would anyone download songs with DRM that can't be used on THEIR player, even if they are free.

  7. Only Two? on Using Two Monitors Makes You More Productive? · · Score: 1

I started using a second monitor about 18 months ago. I do graphic layouts and its great working with photos on one monitor and the layout on the other; or the text content on one and the layout on the other. Just the other day I was actually using a third-- Technically I was using my laptop and the desktop with two monitors, but it was terribly efficient at the time as I was entering some data into excel on the laptop and pulling up data on the desktop at the same time. In the office next door to me, a law office, every employee, lawyers and staff alike, are outfitted with two monitors.

  8. Stats Lie: Non-Genuine Windows Users Don't Use WGA on One In Five Windows Installs Is Non-Genuine · · Score: 1

The number of non-genuine installs of windows is probably a lot higher. People who knowingly installed a pirate copy of Windows probably avoided automatic updates after Microsoft announced they were launching the Genuine Advantage Program so as to avoid the popups that WGA would pop up on their screen. Presumably anyone who knows enough about computers to install a pirated version of windows knows enough to not install MS Spyware.

  9. Is "privacy" the only difference on "Series of Tubes" Metaphor Implemented · · Score: 1

How is this different from Peer to Peer file sharing like old school Napster or Kazaa? Is it simply that the only "peers" you would share with would be people you actually know?

Other than pornography, which clearly will infiltrate this sharing system in .0001 seconds, won't the popularity of "The Tubes" be sharing music, movies, and television that is otherwise copyrighted, leading to an eventual shutting down of the network?

  11. The Simple Answer on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

I would only accept DRM on files that are given to me for free.

I'm much more willing to accept "analog" DRM. That is to say, I'll buy a vinyl record long before I'll buy an itunes song.

So let's review. I buy something, its mine, without restriction. You give it to me for free, well, restrict it however you want, it was free.

I have no problem for paying for digital music files. But I have a big problem not being able to bring it to future PCs or various MP3 players or whatever other device I want.

Since the Wikipedia page has some links to various poker sites, including the top listed poker site, wouldn't that just increase the online poker site ranks as the wiki article increases too [ie the wikipedia article gives some of its rank mojo to the online poker sites it links to?]

But online poker comment spams are out of control. They're more of a menace to the internet than Microsoft, the RIAA, and the Copyright office combined.
