...the per-disc cost of a copy of Microsoft Windows, not counting research, development, marketing, advertising, packaging, employee salaries and benefits, IS ONLY $0.01!!! OMG WE'RE GETTING FLEECED!! M$ IS TEH EVIL!!
"Now, I realize you work for the beast of redmond, and you have a vested interest in this, but really, your bitching is just silly."
So anyone who defends Microsoft is by default a shill? Granted, it's easier to attack the source of a valid argument than to refute the argument itself.
"If you'd noticed, people have already posted the entire relevant snippet, so it was mostly a bit of fun and sensationalism at BillG's expense."
Well then that brings it far out of the range of "news". Maybe people don't take OSS advocates very seriously because so many of them act like children.
"The final release of the next Firefox update, which includes security enhancements, is due by year's end, according to the Firefox road map."
We rightly criticize Microsoft for not responding to security concerns in a timely manner. I hope the Mozilla Foundation will be held to the same standard.

Just like the Yankees, Google is throwing enormous piles of money at (nerd) superstars, hoping that all of that acquired talent will bring them to the top.
Sure, that has (for the most part) worked rather well for the Yankees, but they are also highly criticized for their gluttonous payroll, and dare I say, anticompetetive behavior.
How long will it take Google to earn that same scorn?

"Instead he orders troops home from a warzone to shoot on its own citizens."
Is that how it's being portrayed in Europe? No wonder you guys are so hostile towards Bush (I have my own reasons, but not because of misinformation).
No troops were withdrawn from the middle east. These national guard soldiers were home on a regular rotation, and instead of getting some time off, were ordered to disaster relief duty.
And AFAIK, the only people that the troops shot were part of a group that was itself shooting at some engineers working on a bridge. They got what they deserved.
"Well, most capitalist countries have taxes on blank media now, specifically to "pay artists" for the IP that it is assumed you will use those CD-Rs to copy."
Just because a law exists in a capitalistic country doesn't mean it supports capitalism. In fact, taxation is the exact opposite of pure capitalism.
I believe what you're talking about is "corporate welfare"; hardly a concept grown of the free market.
"I once worked on a CSS which was bigger and more unwieldy than I was happy with, and some changes meant revisiting the HTML side to redesign (very painstaking work.)"
The fundamental reason for CSS is to separate structure and display. I suspect that if you had to modify HTML to correct display issues, then you hadn't completely separated structure (which belongs in HTML) from display (using CSS).
Granted, migrating a non-compliant site to compliant HTML/XHTML and CSS can be tedious and frustrating (I'm going through the same with my personal site), but in the end you will have much better code, and future re-designs can be done entirely in CSS with much less effort.
"While Intel can complain about AMD's management, I think the problem is that they never have the money to operate correctly because of Intel's influence." (emphasis mine)
From that point on, everything you say is speculation. It all might very well turn out to be true, but that's why we have courts to determine these things instead if incredibly biased mobs.
I suspect that you won't be satisfied with any court ruling in favor of Intel, or against AMD. That tells me that "winning" is more important to you than the execution of due process. Hence, we're back to the Kool-Aid.
What separates a "shill" from somebody who simply prefers Windows?
And why don't I hear anything about Linux "shills" here on Slashdot?
Just because you disagree with them, doesn't mean their comments should be utterly dismissed... unless of course you're not really interested in having a debate.
Seriously people, a lot of you need to start looking at things more objectively. Maybe Intel illegally leverages its market power. Maybe poor planning and management have hindered AMD's growth.
But to dismiss either side purely on ideology doesn't speak highly of your ability (or willingness) to comprehensively consider issues like this.
Let's wait for the facts to come out, and then we can start making our judgements.
You say you got "caught", as if you believe you were doing something wrong?
Judging by all the rationalizations for copyright infringement listed on Slashdot every time the RIAA is mentioned, I can't imagine why you'd feel that way.
You do have a point there... The notebook I'm running linux on has an ATI radeon mobility 9700 in it and I'm not sure the Linux drivers for it are up to the task of most of the games I want to run.
I'm willing to be proven wrong though:) Maybe I'll finally have a reason to complete the switch.
I already purchased the games. I resent having to pay again just to play them (with varying degrees of (un)playability) on Linux. Perhaps I'm just holding Linux to an unreasonable standard.
Well said! For such a mature and enlightened user community, a lot of them will say anything to justify copyright infringement. From a simple entitlement mentality, to some self-righteous comparison of to the civil rights movement, the goal appears to be the same: shit for free.
I could try that just to see if it uses the USB card right, but I still want to have the AC97 sound for when I take my laptop on the road (without the USB, naturally).

"This cost does not include money spent on marketing or development"
Yeah, that would have been too... Honest? Thorough?
So what's the per-chip cost WITH all of the overhead?

And as long as that is true, Linux will NEVER replace Windows on a significant percentage of consumer desktops.

No, but i'll wager the grammar police will want to have a few words with you.
Slashbot story submitter forsakes sensationalist rhetoric and accurately represents story with headline and summary.

Watch out for the Karma Police.

Any idea how far Wine is behind (in terms of compatibility) Cedega?
I appreciate the effort, but I have a problem with having to pay again for a game I already paid once for.
