There are no less than 7 open access points reachable from the comfort of my home. I can't say for sure whether or not their owners want to share them, but they're certainly available.

On a related note, I have to wonder how many people are inadvertently connecting to their neighbor's wireless networks, especially with ambiguous SSIDs like "LinkSys".

I also take issue with the idea that someone is inherently harmed by infidelity, especially if they don't know about it. If you're going to cheat, have the decency to keep it to yourself instead of lightening your conscience by burdening your partner.

I agree that wives are a strong anti-prostitution force, for the reasons you mention, but the fact is that even if wives == roommates these days, then it's still cheaper to have free sex with your roommate than to pay for a prostitute, especially if you have sex more than once a week.

Also, it's rumored that some people actually like being married.

Additionally, your argument is that Craigslist would be vilified as a tax evasion scheme. That ignores the fact that virtually nobody pays taxes on ANY goods or services ordered online, from Amazon to Adult Friend Finder. Moreover, it's not Craigslist's responsibility to make sure people pay taxes, any more than it is the local newspapers with classified ads, or the housing association with garage sales. And I personally believe we should keep it that way.

Nevada's experiment with legal prostitution shows that, unless legal prostitution can compete on price with illegal prostitution, you still get plenty of street walkers.

You're very unlikely to see street walkers outside of Clark (LV) or Washoe (Reno) Counties, unless maybe they're lost. Since prostitution is illegal in both locales, your argument doesn't really hold up.

  12. Re:All I have to say is... on Australia, UK To Test Vehicle Speed-Limiting Devices · · Score: 5, Insightful

    1) It's not just about how well you can maneuver your vehicle along the road surface, it's also about what sort of a hazard your vehicle traveling at high speed presents to other motorists, and what risk they present to you. (And let's face it, everyone thinks they're a better driver than they really are).

    2) Do you really trust everyone around you to judge what is "safe for conditions"? The phrase is a legal catchall for circumstances when a driver is not exceeding the posted limit, but should have known that it's imprudent to continue at 75MPH in freezing rain. It's not a justification to push up against the laws of physics.

    3) How do you define "safe for conditions"? As fast as you can possibly travel? What margin of error do you leave, if any, and how do you calculate that? There are plenty of professional drivers who have trouble doing that on a closed course with known variables. Changing the venue to a public road only makes things worse, unless you put a higher priority on your driving freedom than most people's desire to be free of wanton carnage.

    4) Speed limits are appropriate in most circumstances. Residential and commercial districts have a lot of activity, and it doesn't really matter how straight and flat the road is when a kid runs out in the road, or a traffic light turns red, or someone has to edge their car out into the road a bit just to see if it's clear to enter the roadway.

    5) Rural highways are really the only place that a high speed limit is appropriate, and left of the Mississippi, we have rather high limits -- 75 to 80. There are many places where this could be safely raised to 120+, but the problem is that this isn't Germany, and there are many, many cars on the road here that can't go over 80 or 90. Good luck convincing America that everyone's car *must* be capable of at least 120MPH (and all the parts and maintenance that go along with that).

    6) Speed doesn't kill, but speed differential does. When you have people traveling at 70, 140, and 210MPH all on the same road, it's just asking for problems. What happens when the guy doing 140 changes lanes in front of you, doing 210, to pass the guy going 70? You slam on the brakes, and the guy rounding the curve behind you (driving "not too fast" for conditions) plows into you. Congratulations -- you just got killed and nobody was legally at fault.

Personally, I couldn't help but notice the scenes shot in the Budweiser factory, which was a hard hit to suspension of disbelief. (Most of the "engine room" scenes with pipes and/or vats were from the factory, and are filled with America's finest swill).

As for the film overall, it was like Star Trek meets Star Wars Ep 1-3, minus Jar Jar. (I think.. maybe JJ stands for Jar-Jar).

JJ Abrams has some good ideas from time to time, but his execution usually sucks, and his director qual should be pulled. He's best when he sets the stage and then lets someone else run the show, a la Lost. Alias was like a dumbed-down version of 007, which, considering the intellectual level of Bond, is saying a lot.

Then again, the recent issue of Wired that he guest edited (?) was fairly interesting. Maybe TV & film just aren't his calling.
