I can tell you that Google, Vonage and everyone else who has a web presence out there already pays a bill. They're already paying to make sure that their packets get where they're going. How is it the consumers fault that AT&T can't work out a profitable peering agreement with Google's bandwith provider? I can tell you why they can't! Too many AT&T customers sending email, visiting site, etc. that aren't on AT&T's network. Since they can't keep their customers on their own network, they have agreements that let them swap traffic "for free". For example, AT&T swaps with C&W so that everyone stays connected, all the email gets through, and we can all surf where we want. What they really want to do away with is the peering agreements. They're all trying to move to an AOL-ish model where you keep your customers on your 'net and just call it "the internet", even though it's really only sites that are either hosted or cached on their network. Man, this makes the Chinese goverment look like a bunch of role models instead of the censors that they really are.

Well, I don't want anyone telling me "You've got mail!" I want a real internet connection.

I pay my bill to Verizon for a screaming fast 7MB/sec FIOSS connection. If I want to host, which is against my AUP, but I never put up anything that sucks up too much bandwidth, so they've never complained. Still, it is bandwidth that I purchase from my provider. I want to go where I want and do what I want on 'net without some damn pop up saying "Google is over it's service limit with Verizon and so your access to this site is temporarily blocked." If Verizon tries it, I'll be going back to my own T1 with an indie carrier. If the indie carrier tries it, so help me, I'll start my own wireless 'net replacement, invite everyone to join me, and make rude hand gestures at the big boys like AT&T, C&W, etc.

If you don't like this legislation, write your congressman or your sentor and tell them to get their 90 year old heads out of the sand before it's too late.

  17. Just Chicago? on Maryland Governor Wants Paper Ballots · · Score: 1

You folks need to come to Texas to see how to really run an election. First off, you buy all the votes you can. Then you do a bunch of registration drives, where all kinds of people, including dead ones, get registered. Then you have your lackeys at the polling places. If they see too many ballots coming in that are not voting "the straight party ticket", those boxes get removed, carried away, and the ballots are sorted. Anyone who voted in a way you don't like gets their ballot replaced. Your lackeys also turn a blind eye when it's time for your folks to come through the second, third, or tenth time. Then after the election, you have your counters who convienently skip the other side's candidates votes. Google on Duval County and you'll get the idea. The real clincher folks - it's all Democrats.

Given my experience with the Democrat machine here in Texas, I'd say that they want to stay electronic because it's easier to manipulate. Look at the issues with the Diebold E-voting machines - 1 minute hacks, hardwired admin passwords, etc.

My solution - it's really simple and best of all, it's free. It's called getting your fat a$$ up and going for a walk. Get a good chair or ball or what ever makes you happy. Be sure to set your desk up properly. Most companies have someone who can help with the proper ergonomic adjustments. Even with all that there are still times when you just feel cramped. When that happens, get up and go walk around the building. It won't take 10 minutes and you'll feel ever so much better. Then you can go back to work.

If you're going to do that, it really shouldn't be on line. While I agree that someone needs to be able to get to the "God" passwords in the event of a catastrophic event, our solution to that is very low tech. They are written out on a sheet of paper and placed in a slightly special safe. It takes two keys to open and only a few of us have keys. Some of us have the A key and some of us have the B key.

That way if any of us needs a password to which we do not normally have access, we still have to convince another person to help us open the safe. It provides a secure check & balance with very little inconvienence other than filing away a new sheet of paper once a month.

I reiterate my statement from above - "Which one of you - squeezed between high gas prices, high taxes, and a few years of pay cuts - wants to pay more for anything?" You don't seriously expect Target to just "suck it up". They're going to pass it on to everyone else that shops at Target. If the Target.com web site doesn't suit you, shop elsewhere. Target isn't that great anyway. Encourge others not to shop at Target and write the company to tell them why you aren't shopping there. It's a lot more effective than a law suit.

    (open sarcasm and flamebait)
No, we have the people who used to be left behind as bear bait telling everyone else to march around to a specific set of rules or they'll sue. Do they pay for any of this? No...they expect the business to foot the bill and then pass the costs on to the rest of the customers. You know who that means, don't you? It means the other 99% of us. With a site the size of Target.com, that's a pretty signficiant chunck of change. Which one of you, squeezed between high taxes, high gas prices, and a few years of pay cuts, wants to pay more for anything because a relatively small group of people doesn't like the web site?

If you don't like the web site, go to the store. If you don't like the store, SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Why? So some freakin' lawyer can get his grubby mits on 1/3 or more of the settlement and some money grubbers can get their hands on the rest.

I'd really like to see something similar from the open source community for a firewall product. I don't trust the Collective to make good choices for me, so I'd be pretty open to turning off Windows Firewall in favor of an open source product. While I don't make a habit of perusing source code for such things, it's always nice to know that you can so that you can avoid another Symantec situation.
