How could I suggest withholding certain liberties to friends?
The state needs to define union, and seperate the word "marriage" from it. The problem here is that "marriage" is two seperate distinctions. All "marriages" should be listed as "civil Unions" with the state - and there should be no gender associations with it.
The term "Marriage" can then remain the religious term it's supposed to be, and the whole issue of state sposered benefits by gays or straights then vanishes.
I don't see knoppix connecting to the axim. Onboard nic's may be a problem? I've got an asus p4pe and I'm using a pci nic.
Any settings I should jot down for to do the connect when I pop the cable back in? Has it gotten to the point of autodetect for connection? Or should I get ip settings and dns ?
Is that why you think I responded? To get the last word?
I take it by your response that all DSL modems are not supported. In which case I had a valid question, and of course - you with your attitude was too busy trashing my response to help.
You may think that you live "in reality" when it comes to attitude and "training the sheep" but the only reality is that you'll chase more folks away than convert.
I checked knoppix.net since I don't read german and wasn't going to babel it -
A few questions - When I do boot - What will be the biggest difference in navigation/usage? Will there be any major things I need to research before using it to get connectivity? What devices shouldn't be connected to the pc? I'm guessing the sidewinder, strategic commander, and the dell axim I have should be disconnected.
What of your tone? You make an assumption and respond with sarcasm. I'm supposed to listen to a messenger that can't set aside bias to have an actual discussion?
I'm aware with issues with linux and winmodems - Will the modem I have be able to connect via yahoo DSL - Driver support is included for all dsl modems?
Yes, I don't know anything about Linux. Yes, I am open to trying new things.
Perhaps one day you'll realize that attitudes like yours are hampering acceptance of Linux.
BTW - Go and read other comments I've made here. I don't belittle people when talking. Perhaps if you scan thru the comments - you can come back - drop the attitude, and share some info.
At home - I'll do a bit of surfing, Play a lot of games - Like XCOM to Doom 3. I have a liscenced copy of Photoshop I use. I will need an application that runs tsql queries against a MS SQL box for my web site, and now since I have a dvd burner - an application that will allow me to create dvd's and watch them as well.
Perhaps had there been an actual truth there - you'd be right.
See - this is what happens EVERY time I try to ask what the merits are of switching to Linux and how it be good for me. I'm a patient guy - I will listen and talk - do point and counter point. I'll even change my mind.
Your post is why Linux isn't taken seriously by many - as the parent poster referred to . If the best reason for me to switch is because linux people will make fun of me if I don't. Then I'm not switching because it's not a failure on my part. The way to sell your product is to tell my why your product is good. When you have to berate another product to do it - you aren't exactly filling me with confidence about yours.
I have legal copies of the software I use - yes, Including photoshop 6. I won't be getting into cryptography anytime soon.
I'd look into that stability issue. I don't crash -On windows 2k - and any real windows user would of told you to avoid XP until after the fixes for the second service pack. In about a month I might take the plunge at home - I was forced to at work for my main development machine. It's been three weeks - no crashes.
I've been surfing the net for years - and yet to be infected by a virus or trojan. Before switching to firefox I had most sites in high security - so no popups, no ads, no malware loaded to the machine.
I appreciated the points until you started with the "scum suckers" and "sheep". After that I rolled my eyes, and hopefully someone else will pick up the slack, and tell me why I should switch.
Does that mean you'll switch to windows? Because I told you that you are "wrong".? Do you see the point I'm trying to make here? Without referring to windows - tell me what is better for me as an individual to switch to Linux. I keep asking - but I never get a good response.
I've asked lots of what I assumed were computer swavvy individuals, "Hey why not try Linux out?".
So far (and this includes this article) all I've seen is "Switch to Linux because it isn't windows", dozens of erroneous responses on windows uptime/reboots/BSOD's and some really amusing made up boot up wait time posts.
What I haven't seen is why I should use linux. That's why I don't switch.
I tried firefox because people informed be of WHY there would be improvements. The reasoned discussion gave me enough impetuos to actually download and install it.
Had the comments been more like "Get firefox since IE is teh suxors" - I would not have tried it. If the only way to present a product is by diminishing the competing product - you aren't giving me any reason to use your product - but rather informing me that the other product will most likely have features you don't want me to see.
I'm open to trying new things. Tell me what's good about it - win me over on features, explain your product without referring to the other product. Impress on me the ease of use, How it will improve my life.
Telling me that the reason to change is because your opinion of the opposing product is negative isn't going to work. I work with win2k, I know how to repair and work it. I know how to protect it. When I'm told to switch so I won't ever see a BSOD again just makes me roll my eyes.
I switched to firefox a few weeks ago and shortly after started to use it exsclusively. I was on the verge of telling my family and friends to make the switch as well.
However - I can't do that right now. When I learned of the new version released, and how it will be supplanted by a new release soon, and the lack of autoupdating - it WILL be a burden for some of the people I'd tell to switch.
From what I saw - to upgrade to a newer release - Firefox has to be uninstalled and then re-installed - and until the folks who wrote the freely available functions upgrade them - they won't be compatible with the new release. This exploit too has me wondering if it really isn't way to soon to force them to switch. They've all been educated to use the auto update for IE.
Great product. I'm hooked. I will continue to use it. Blocking ads, images, bugmenot, and a host of other functions have won me over. But before I can recommend it to the folks that aren't exactly technical - the team will need to either allow for patch updates, or auto-updates.
Uh... The fact that apparantly the newspapers and media count your votes in the US for you quite frankly disturbs me...
They only did it to generate more controvercy. Our media isn't interested in whats best for us - They seel nothing but drama and fear and controvercy to drive up advertising rates. That's why they welcome disasters, Wars, and political controvercy - it fattens their bank accounts.
Will Real ever reimburse me for the cd I purchased to get the player - load it, and then be informed a month later that I would have to "update" my player at additional cost? It wouldn't of been so bad if it had maintained functionality, but without the upgrade - wel gosh gee darn - I could'nt watch the new content out. I'm sorry - but investing 50 dollars for a product that worked for a month was wrong - and I've made sure that none of my family or friends ever invested, or used your product ever since.
So I suppose I should clarify - would it be worth refunding my money to try to attract customers? Or are you satisfied with me telling my eight people (according to that business rule about disgruntled customers) to avoid Real and its associated products like it was the plague?
I would buy a new star trek game. However, I won't be buying any MMOG since I don't have the time to play it to get any "community" game play sustainable.
I think that these MMOG do more harm than good for gaming - they cause the acceptance of subscription based software (can't play off-line - Can't play unless you play). And they spell the death of many genres of games that really can't be made into MMOG.
Me? I shut off Doom 3 for a bit and have playing X-Com for the past week - To tell you the truth - I'm having a hell of a lot more fun playing X-Com.

Put unleaded in your diesel engine lately? If you can't figure out the analogy, you shouldn't be using it.
Heh - Try putting 87 octane in a performance car. After the pinging turns to knocking - and the expensive repair bill afterwards - You'll wish you had gone with the recommended gasoline.
It takes the right man to stand up and be counted.
Up until this election - I'd of voted for Colin Powell - But after his concilatory speech to India telling them not to worry about anti-american tech jobs sentiment - I couldn't do it.

Look at Perot and Nader. They both damaged the votes that would of gone to party candidates. If enough people can be convinced - we can have an independant in the white house.
But try telling that to the sheep that vote for a party, and not an individual on their strengths.
I license it and can replace it for free/nominal cost for the duration of the license.

Better: which black person was allowed to run for president in the last 40 years? All of them - Like Alan Keyes and Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson to name a few.
How many woman have run? Shouldn't half of the Population get a shot first?
For some customers they don't even get cash rebates - he was furious to recieve 90.00 worth of Instore Vouchers for rebates instead of a check.
Course - He's one of those reciept carrying - borrow item from best buy kind of guys that uses an item for a week - then returns it and buys the next most expensive one (rinse wash repeat).
Both NY and California contribute more to this country just about all other states combined both economically and culturally.
Ahhh, so that explains why I hate living in America nowadays.

err - our shuttles can land automated as well..
Most jetliners too. Humans are there just to make the passengers warm and fuzzy.
I didn't falsify my records when I started my sites.
I have moved twice since then. Somehow - I keep forgetting to update the records...

Good day.
Product is meant as a placeholder.
Ok. Good. What as an OS will Linux do for me?
At home - I'll do a bit of surfing, Play a lot of games - Like XCOM to Doom 3. I have a liscenced copy of Photoshop I use. I will need an application that runs tsql queries against a MS SQL box for my web site, and now since I have a dvd burner - an application that will allow me to create dvd's and watch them as well.
I connect to the web via yahoo dsl.
Based on those needs why is Linux better for me?
Perhaps had there been an actual truth there - you'd be right.

Again. No "Why" .
I'm told I'm just "wrong" from an AC.
Hey - Guess what. You're "wrong".
Does that mean you'll switch to windows? Because I told you that you are "wrong".? Do you see the point I'm trying to make here? Without referring to windows - tell me what is better for me as an individual to switch to Linux. I keep asking - but I never get a good response.
