I wonder just how big the issue of "piracy" is and if it's even feasible to spend the amount of money they do with finding ways to encrypt software, or region encode them.
Have they even evaluated just doing worldwide releases and saving the cash? I mean really, the days before macromedia didn't kill off the movie industry, and the easily available radio shack macromedia disabler didn't kill em off either.
I would hope that they re-evaluate their perspective on this sionce no matter what they put out, some person in the world will circumvent it, and teach others how to do the same.
I mean really - Sony spent how much on their last encryption? And it was disabled by a ten cent marker?
I run a small website for news and discusion. Last month I had 15,000 visits and served up over 500,000 pages.
How many visits does slashdot get? How many page views? Ebay? MSNBC? Weatherchannel? Tom's Hardware?
Does anyone here actually understand the magnitude of pages, sites, and information that they are proposing on watching and filtering?
The number is mind boggling.
We have folks comparing this to another step twords 1984. In readiong their comments, I wonder if they've even read the book?
All this "surveillance" of the web will accomplish is a useless oversized database with statistics that will take people years to get a grasp on. It'll be a case of "too much information" that won't be easily collated - and hence , pretty useless.
It was Burger King - And the Burger King (single) Won and the Burger King (corp) Lost, and wasn't allowed to put a resteraunt within a thirty mile radius - So folks attending EIU have a long way to go to get a whopper.
Yeah, and then every 5 minutes a loud blaring ad would come on for a new Chevy Trailblazer, followed by an Ad for Herpes medication, and followed up with a Burger King ad..
I mean really - look what happened to the net...LOL
What a crock - exactly how much waste are we talking? More than one dumpster day at Burger King? I sincerely doubt the amount of butterflys posted out there would come close to matching the amount of Ciggarrete buds ground into the ground down central avenue in an hour.
While I think that they (and the penguin) should not have defaced public property with ads - to simply state that it creates waste and Microsoft is evil because of that IMHO just illustrates an agenda rather than a fact.
Microsoft does do bad things. We know that. It's a given, Just like rain falling from the sky, Grass grows, and rocks hurt when they fall off a cliff and hit you on the head.
But to claim "waste" and "landfill" on this? Sheesh..
I do love watching Junkyard wars, but something always bugged me - Why is there the turnover in hosts for the show? It seems that each season has a brand new host for a show that I'd think most hosts would like to stay on in order to achieve name branding. Is there something going on behind the scenes? Power plays? Or is it just cursed to have a new host for each season?
I disagree with that - Diesal motors can be outfitted with Mufflers - Would a turbine function if its exhaust gasses were funnelled thru a series of chambers (creating backpressure)?
Living next to a railway crossing - I wonder how loud it's going to be - Judging from Jet's flying in and out of airports - I'll be moving away from any railroad tracks.
I thought I was the only one to quit listening to radio because of that. I used to listen to a talk radio station on my way to work in the morning - Half hour commute - one way - When I realized all I was getting was a weather report (one minute) and five minutes of content. Hooked up with 24 minutes of commercials.
I occaisionally listen to a classical station that has no commercials - or more often, just enjoy the silence of my ride.
I wonder what happened to quality instead of quantity in advertising - Charge more for the ad time and have less commercials that way I am not deluged by unwanted annoying ads, and the radio station still makes the same amount.
I enjoyed using "mouse moves" to cast spells in Black and White - And it would be cool maybe to input text that way, Mouse a smiley to create a smile icon and such.
I must run forth and patent the idea of mouse gestures inputting text to a form!//grabs two by four
Back off - It's my idea!
This is all meaningless

Actually, you are all wrong. Life does not exist in the Universe. From Douglas Adams: 4 POPULATION: None It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
You're on to something with them inventing this telephone. I need to immediately patent saving the call to a device for replay later in case you can't answer the phone - and perhaps patenting an id display to see who is calling.
I saw that too - But I was referring to the Ionosphre being Highly charged, and us essentially putting a conductive wire from that charged area and attaching to - well - the ground.
I nosed around in the archives looking for the post where someone had linked a paper discussing the possibility of having a large Zapping sound as the Ionosphere was grounded.
