I have to join the others here in thanking you for your show and your refreshing take on food. I've eaten so much more mangos since seeing the easy way to peeling them, and I bought a chimney starter for my coals for grilling.
How do you feel now that you've pretty Much established yourself as a the Icon of cooking for nerds and geeks all over the world? Will you change your show at all? And what are your plans for the future?
Oh, and even though folks were joking here- I think FoodTV could make a mint from getting you on Iron Chef. Think of the free publicity Slashdot would give for the event.
But therin lies the problem, I refuse to buy anything from X-10 precisely because of the ads. Just as I will refuse to Buy "Bowflex" because of the constant barrage of that assinine commercial on tv with the idiot who's "In the best shape of his Life", and I'll never purchase anything from "Olsen Rugs" because of the annoying Radio commercial they had.
As soon as I get annoyed by over advertising/stupid advertising of a Product, I get "Branded" all right, And I totally refuse to purchase said product.
Anyway, I disabled scripting, and run a pop up ad slayer, as well as block cookies from most "ad places"
So I see a lot less of advertising that most see when they surf. I haven't seen a pop up/ pop under ad in months, nor have I seen any of those "shake the screen" ads in months either.
Why is everyone going to all this effort to speed up cd transfer rates. It should be obvious how easy it is to speed the whole mess up. All you need is a strong source of Brownian motion.
A really hot cup of tea poured into an cd player/burner should do it.
I don't understand why we need a mountain, Why not just build a "Core Waste Dump"? That usually took care of all my pollution needs and freed me up to making death stars with the super happy fun beam that made planets into asteroids.
All an ISP has to do is inform their customers that any e-mailings of over 50 addresses will be reviewed and placed on hold for the customer to acknowledge that it is indeed their e-mail going out. After it is acknowledged, if it is an advertisement or spam, that e-mail will cost 1 or 2 cents for each address it's being sent to.
Unfortunately, this doesn't address the torrent of spam from China, nor the Nigerean Millions waiting for a bank acount spam, But at least it would be a start.
I have to agree, and who would be dumb enough to actually apply for a loan with a spammer?
I have rules set up in e-mail that automatically dumps anything with the words Viagra, Porn, mortgage, Credit, Money, Mailing, and a dozen other keywords, I dropped from 50 spams a day to under 5.
What really annoys me is I will recieve the same damn spam with 5 different addresses, I suppose this is to get around my junk e-mail list of addresses I don't want to hear from, but what the hell does the spammer think? If I take the time to block a spam e-mail, Does he really think that on the 15th time I block his new address I'll suddenly think "Wow, I guess I really do need to have bigger breasts"? Even tho I'm a male?
I used to build systems for friends and family by going to the computer shows. The downside was always having to support software issues, but I iused to make some good cash from it.
I now turn them away and tell them to buy from Gateway or Dell instead - a Gateway can be had now for as little as 600.00 US complete. My profit margin would be very slim having to build it myself.
The only downside I see is that the namebrands tend to have some hardware issues if you try to change the OS from whatever they ship with. Seems as if the sound card/ video card is proprietary in some fasion, and even switching from the Millenium OS to Win 98 can be a chore since the manufacturers don't supply drivers for the other equiptment.
The upside is, I can refer them to name brand tech support and go back to gaming instead of sitting on a phone for 2 hours fixing a Microsoft bug.
Why don't we opt in for ads? So far, every time I see someone post about blocking the ads, or eliminating pop-ups - some self-rightous Don ?Quixotes come riding out of the dust and flame those that dare complain about ads.
So why not make them opt in? With all these rabid followers they should be enough to pay the bills around here?
There are still a large amount of people living where High Speed surfing isn't available. What good is a "cool site" when it takes 2 or 3 minutes to load to a browser?
I'm one of those folks, where I live there IS no cable hookup, DSL, or even ISDN. I'm stuck calling a city 20 miles away for my dialup to the net - thank the deities that I have access to a call pack that makes it a local call - since it would otherwise be considered a toll call for me to get online.
Try and get that one past the human subjects guidelines in America. Good luck! You might consider it ethical, but fortunately, the research community here does not.
Nice, add a red herring instead of addressing the personal responsibility poiunt.
I think you've got that wrong. People like you want to create waste, and not take responsibility for its disposal. You also want to hold ordinary Chinese citizens responsible for the actions of companies that they can't control.
Wel, that's bull, and the chinese citizens should be taking their actions against the companies that are dumping the stuff - i.e. their own people.
Dumping your shit in someone elses back yard is not a "solution". Your red herring about grain is just that.
Sorry, But the United States isn't dumping it, stay on topic.
Nonsense. If you pay the lowest bidder to dispose of your waste, and you know that they're cheap because they're dumping it in the river, you are responsible. It's like hiring mercenaries to drive people off your land, and claiming that it's the mercenaries responsibility to do it ethically.
Yes, your reply is nonsense, and you failed to address the rest of my points which clarified it.
Well, even if this is true, Why should we refuse to sell? Do we need to write a EULA to cover what we sell? If we sell a car in Japan, do we get to mandate everything about it? What of the grain we ship, can we limit the days it's allowed to be eaten on?
As for the Bum taking the money? Well, He took it didn't he? He knows what he's getting into doesn't He? Ever hear of a thing called "Personal Responsibility"? After All, you seem to be invoking it in your second paragraph, But Dr. Spork, idiots like you (normally I don't flame, but I do believe in "tit for tat") feel that personal responsiblity extends only to things that you don't find too confining, or too difficult to do.
The government has come up with a solution, we are not responsible for all the worlds ills. If we ship grain to a third world country, and it sits on a dock and rots, it doesn't mean that the United States is Evil because the country in Question has a ton of rotting grain on its dock, Rather, the idiots in that country are responsible for that rotting grain on the dock.
If China or other countries wish to take our money and squander it elsewhere instead of doing the responsible thing, well, that's their problem. They shouldn't of made the deal in the first place.
As for not caring about other people? With the amount of aid we send everywhere? Christ, people bitch about everything - If the United States Became Isolationist and pulled out of everywhere, people would bitch, we send food and money all over the place, people still bitch.
As I stated earlier (something you failed to address) it isn't as if we are the ones spreading it on the countryside, we pay them money to dispose of the stuff. At that point (believe it or not) It's the responsibility of the ones taking the money to do the right thing by it. You can cry and hate the United States all you want, but we give "x" number of dollars for a country to dispose of it. It's not our fault you don't like what the country we PAY money to dispose of this stuff does with it.
The title of this article is Misleading. As stated before here, we pay china and other nations to dispose of these Items. Once we write the check, it's out of our control.
Look at it this way, You take your used car to a Junkyard to dispose of it. It's not worth anything so you pay 5 bucks to get rid of it. Now , the junkyard is supposed to pull the battery, drain the fluids, and strip most of the car down before smashing it, and sending it to the smelters to be melted. But instead, they just roll the car into a resevior and all that oil, battery acid, transmission fluid pollutes the water.
Now, you had a good faith arrangement that the Junkman was to dispose of the car properly, but instead, he didn't - Are you liable for his actions?
IANAL, but once you showed the bill of sale, I seriously doubt that the person who got the car to the Junkyard is.
It's the same issue here. However, the title of the article makes it look like the United States is loading up b-52's with this stuff , and dropping it across the country over there.
I get rather annoyed when people take cheap shots at the United States like this. It doesn't do anything to foster anything but bad will.
How can you blame the Republicans for this - this legislation was signed in By none other than Bill Clinton, Who was, as most democrats are, In the hip pocket of the recording and motion Picture industry.
It totally amazes me how folks will try and use issues like this to further their political parties.
If anything, the rescue will come in the form of a conservative judicial panel upholding the letter of law, and overturning the ridicuylous Clinton era DMCA.
Microsoft will have to give up its source code, despite it being their own creation, But every time a soft drink Manufacturer asks for the coca cola recipe, they get shot down in court.
It's like the saying "That which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger". So yes, eaxh build gets better and better - Just because Nintendo has a brand name doesn't mean that a contender can't come in and make a name for themselves. Microsoft has come under fire and is watched under a magnifying glass now.
Would this same article have appeared here id AOL/Time Warner were to come out with their own versions of a hand held?
Sure, it's Microsoft, but I think the days of monopolistic methods by them are over - too many critics out there to pull any shenenagins again - I look forward to the competition coming up on handhelds - it's better for the consumer in the long term.
What happens when MS shoots me a BSOD? How the heck am I supposed to reboot if the ram is going to remember what crashed My machine in the first place?
Heh - aside from that, it would be way cool to power off the system, come back 24 hours later and have it boot up in seconds. Heck, Technically, it should be able to freeze a moment in Unreal Tournament , allow you to go get a beer, then comeback and pick up where you left off.
I have to join the others here in thanking you for your show and your refreshing take on food. I've eaten so much more mangos since seeing the easy way to peeling them, and I bought a chimney starter for my coals for grilling.

Does this mean that Taco Bell will be putting another target out, and we all have a chance at getting a Free Taco?
Why is everyone going to all this effort to speed up cd transfer rates. It should be obvious how easy it is to speed the whole mess up. All you need is a strong source of Brownian motion.

That bill was for real from what seems to be a real bad place to do business with.
here's a link to the full story.(gisol.org)
Are they able to carry coconuts?
Well, I didn't know who started it, but now I know who to forward it all to.

ahh, never mind.

What the heck's the difference?
Well, the routing number refused them, and it was for LaSalle Bank - They are all over Illinois.
Hell, they even use fingerprinting for accounts.
I tried to sign up on pay-pal for one of my web sites, but they wouldn't accept one of illinois largest bank chains because of "Security Procedures".
this is despite the fact that up until a year ago they were accepting accounts from the bank.
Even though the bank has been secure for them this whole time, they REFUSED to sign my account up.
The article is pretty insiteful and true to boot.
