There will be FS's optimized for certain tasks(something that is already happening now, look at ReiserFS SQUID Optimization)
That's the first time I hear about that. Could you elaborate a little? I do know that Reiserfs works really well with small files, is that what you are talking about?
My apologies that this is off-topic, I'm not sure if this is the best topic to post this under, but this is important and needs to be brought to people's attention.
Actually, it is a very interesting discussion, even though it is off topic.
Who would you rather your daughter have her first experiences with: Some horny teenage boy who will do anything he can to get into her pants, or an adult who you know and trust to respect her and not pressure her?
Yeah, some horny 40-year old guy is better... But jokes aside, I have a problem with that statement. Why would an adult be more responsible than a horny teenage boy, as you put it?
I did not choose my sexual orientation, and even though many people say it's a sickness or a disease, it's just as valid as homosexuality, bisexuality, and many other orientations whose members were once persecuted as we are, but are now seen as being normal.
Well, no not really. Homosexuals are not seen as normal, don't kid yourself (no pun intended). Homosexuality *is* perceived as sickness (just ask Dr. Laura).
Anyway, regardless of my and your opinion, I do think it's an interesting discussion and I invite others to join in.

But that would mean that I am allowed to copy a CD so that I can listen to it at home, at work, whatever, or rip the CD -- something the record companies say I am not allowed to do...
Even if it does work, there is no way I'm running anything as root unless it is absolutely necessary. And the buggy netscape 6.0 is not what I consider necessary. I'll wait till they fix it. ___
Really? Well, you're better off than me then. For me it doesn't even start. "Segmentation fault on line 29" or something like that. Running on Mandrake 7.2 (hehe -- trying to:-)
You may not believe it, but I saw one application form with field sex having 3 options: male/female/other. Don't know what that was supposed to mean, but I thought that was funny. ___
I seem to recall that scientists have conclusively proven that bumble bees cannot fly (wings too small, body too heavy...). Apparently the laws of physics don't apply to bumble bees. Or something. ___
first, turn off the italics. it's annoying.
second, all of these games came out on PC *first*, and ported to a console years later. There is no Q3 and UT for console, you say? No D2? They've been out for how long? By the time they are ported (if ever) they become irrelevant.
I tried Win4Lin on my machine. The setup was quite quirky. The scripts they include died on me on several occasions. I will not go into details, but suffice it to say I was able to work around that rather easily, but it was still annoying.
Anyway, once I got windows installed under Win4Lin, everything worked like a charm. The speed is absolutely amazing. Windows almost seems _faster_ than if you run it on bare hardware. And it's not like my machine is a speed demon (AMD K6-300, 64MB RAM).
What really concernes me about Win4Lin though is that it runs as root, and applies some patches to the kernel. That means that every windows application you run also runs as root... which does not make me feel comfortable. Running a proprietary application as root in general is a risky proposition, but when that application is an emulator for the notoriously buggy OS, the results can be disasterous.
Granted, VMWare also loads some kernel modules and runs as root. That's why I feel uneasy about running either of them... Still, it's got to be better than running windows on bare hardware;-)
;-) I guess that's their way of "asking for forgiveness", as RMS insisted.
While I do not like this remark, I think KDE developers have a right to be pissed off at RMS. Heck, I was pissed off when he started preaching his forgiveness thing. With all due respect to RMS, I think that was unnecessary and, indeed, counter-productive. ___
I'm sure there are top developers at BSD that are even worse (no offense BSD, I'm just trying to make a point).
That is a fact actually. That's how OpenBSD got started. And there is still a lot of tension between Open and Net BSD camps. Point is, no matter where you go, be it a free software project or a multi-billion dollar company, you always face things like that. It is really important to just get over it and go on. Don't take it too personally. Free software has advantage here precisely because you can fork it if you don't like the direction where it's going. And I think it makes sence to have forks of the kernel specialized for big iron, PDAs, and general-purpose PCs. One size does not fit all. ___
WooHoo!!!
Just a question: there was a lot of discussion about ReiserFS being too late to be included in 2.4, since it was already frozen. What has changed? ___
good point. One nitpick though -- execute permissions should never be enabled by default. Can you say ILOVEYOU?

Is there Diablo 1/2 for console? How about Worcraft 1/2 and Starcraft? Or Quake 1/2/3? Or Unreal?
I thought so...
And I don't care about Sonic and Mario and Zelda and whatever other crap consoles have.
