once a linux system (i'm presuming you're using linux because you mentioned hwclock) has booted it doesn't use the hardware clock to keep time any longer and instead relies on the kernels own internal timing structures. in short use ntpd, it will query a time server periodically and correct your clock drift.
for more info on how linux keeps time checkout the hwclock and adjtimex man pages.
Because of the decentralization of registrars, if you have a domain with NSI you need to use whois.networksolutions.com Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com if you run whois domainname@whois.networksolutions.com then you'll see the info that you're used to.
I currently have Seagates in one of my linux boxes and am planning on eventually replacing them all with IBM's. In my experience IBM's drives are quieter and are cooler than the Seagates that I have. Two things the make them a winner in my book.
Gee, this is just what we need another horizontal monopoly that is even more all encompassing than Microsoft could ever hope to be.
The danger is not now of course, but in the future. After all this new beast will not only be able to control a chunk of online content, but now owns a chunk of television(CNN), movie (Warner Bros.), and press (Time Magazine).

I was able to read Katz's previous articles with a semblance of interest, but now I tire of him trying to convey the sorrow of the lost dream of Disney for a better world in the future. For sakes man! It's a theme park. People go there not to experience exhibits extolling the wretched dehumanized existence frought with privacy issues which we will lead (and to an extent already do) in the future. People go to theme parks to basically be lied to. They want to forget about the real world for a few days and not have to worry about violence and other stresses of the day. I hope that was somewhat coherent, as I've been awake far too long.
I got curious about Disney's "utoptian" planned community (read prison). So for those of you who would rather read something than listen to what NPR has to say about Celebration, here's a link. Disney@xone.network: Celebration, USA.
Do you not have enough self-control to ignore articles you do not wish to see. Guess what, if I don't feel like reading an article on this site I don't. It's pretty easy to not click on that "Read More..." link. BTW, what did slashdot ever do against you?
Bah! 138 hours for a program. That's nothin'. Back in they day, we had to use cuneiform to write our programs. Very few of us was even afforded th' luxury of that, as we would need many a slave to write a program if we were to finish it by harvest time. And not just that, we had to use tons of clay, and do you know how hard it is to equip 10,000 slaves with clay tables and reeds to write an OLTP system. Phew, makes me wonder why we did such things, as we didn't have a computer t' run the things on.
Yeah, when I got my SGI I went and downloaded fsn (the 3d filemanager from Jurassic Park). Anyway, It's really not all that useful it's mainly just an experimental toy. Now what I think would make a nice interface for a filemanager is the parabolic tree idea that they have at Xerox PARC. (you can find the link by searching slashdot for "parabolic tree")
There's still plenty available out there. I used to frequent the comp.systems.next.marketplace (i think that's it). Also I see many on ebay everyday under the computers:unix section. I haven't gotten one there, but I would recommend deepspacetech.com, especially if your on the east coast. That's where I got my NeXTstation color. As a side note, you can go to the Apple Enterprise Y2K page and download a pdf form to request a y2k copy of NEXTSTEP/OpenSTEP (it depends on the serial no. of your computer). I'm planning on doing this so I can get NS 3.3 Dev (right now I have user). As far as X windows goes I use WindowMaker, and in some ways like it even better than NS. It even has a built in fiend (i.e. the clip).
Yeah, I even remember them having some sort of bazooka model. I think it was like one of those water pressure power rockets you see in supermarkets in the toy aisle, only it looked like a bazooka.

Actually, when my friends and I lived in dorms we would ICQ large iso images of games to each other. But that's besides the point, the jest of what Katz said got across. No, he probably didn't mean that you could only use ICQ to send files to each other, but that's what probably first came to mind for him. Perhaps if he was a BOFH, he would have said scp/rdist/ftp whatever. Does this really matter. Hey, I used to be a nitpicky bastard like you. That is until I figured out that most people care less about the "how" than the end result. Katz isn't a technical writer/person. The sooner you realize this, the less time you'll be thinking of ways you can point this out to others here, and the more time you'll have for a real life.
Reading this gave me the idea to include "objectionble" content (words like: sex, nude, drugs, explosives) in my meta tags so all my site would be intentionally blocked. A note to all the lame website hackers out there: Don't post a bunch of p0rn on the websites you've hacked along with your shout-outs. Just put some "objectionable" keywords in. This is much more subtle and with luck no one will notice for a while. Now, I'm not saying to hack websites, but if you do consider what I've said.
Thank you for encouraging me as a Christian Slashdot reader to speak up. First of all I want to say that I almost completely disagree with everything you've said. IMHO moral limitations are something that should be purely confined to the individuals discretion (i.e. you can not legislate morality - whatever that is). That being said, wouldn't be so much better if someone recognized that they shouldn't do/see/hear something based on their own opinion rather than having someone elses idea of what's right rammed down their throat (i.e. they understand why they do/see/hear something rather than just having a door slammed in their face). Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that parents should let kids do whatever they want, but that after a certain age (say 14/15) a kid should be able to make petty judgment calls (such as seeing South Park) on their own. Anyway, I happend to enjoy the movie. It was one of the funniest I've seen in quite a while. I especially enjoyed the homosexual Satan bit. Remember, "Mock the Devil and he shall flee." - C.S. Lewis
Bah! Back in the day, we didn't even have access to gears and levers. Oh, we dreamed of 'em aye, but we would've had to smelt our own metal. And then there's the problem of findin' a blacksmith. No, we had to use teams of oxen, pulling vast arrays of rope an' pulley. Aye, it took many a year to raise them oxen, and then ta growe th' flax fer the rope. Before that we a' used mules, but they weren't up to the task and often died during computationally raytracing benchmarks. Aye what a strange werld it is now adays with this strange electricity beings used all abouts us.
Well I noticed on my Canopus Spectra that it mentions NTSC in the bios message, so I figured that if I unplugged the monitor while booting up that it would use the composite and s-video outputs. Well, it did. So, since I couldn't get any sleep I decided to get it to work under X. Anyway, I did get it to work, but only at 640x460 (I used that res. to get everything to fit on the TV). If anybody want's the modeline, you can email me. Also if anyone has gotten it to work at 640x480 or 640x485 please email me.
I've had an ATX one for several months. It's great, I have the mobo on one side, and all my scsi disks on the other. The mobo side has an 9cm fan and the disk side has an 8cm. I ordered the fans w/the case for $10 a piece extra which is quite a steal (just look how much fans cost at radioshack). Oh yeah, the sides are hinged. Hopefully I'll get around to painting it purple (ala SGI Indigo2) this week.
Well i couldn't get to the original site, but i see that NEC's citeseer has it.

I've had that problem with my bp6 too. Try booting with noapic=1, this disables the ioapic on your board so you'll lose a few irq's.
I feel left out. I am probably about 40 lbs. under weight :) Oh well, I'll just be sitting around waiting for my thyroid to take a rest.

I'd rather have a wet nurse than a "lactation room", on the account that one would be more useful than the other (i.e. I don't have mammaries).
In a couple weeks at SIGGRAPH, SGI will be demoing hardware acceleration and IRIS Performer under linux.
