While a longtime linux supporter and staunch Free Software guy, I really don't understand the zealotry in "bringing people over."
It's kind of like when I was younger and liked to skate. My best friend was a hardcore bmx freestyler. We used to drive to skateparks (before they closed them all, before they started opening them again) all the time. He rode his bike, I rode my board. No big deal. I didn't try to get him to ride a board, and he didn't try to get me to ride a bike.
We can learn stuff from each other, but there are enough skateboarders around now, it won't hurt if there aren't more.
I'm lucky enough to have a lot of freedom at work and have laughed at these guys many times when virus' come through, first one, then another, like dominoes. Sure I feel superior to them and their Outlook. So what?
If people don't get it, fuck 'em. If they want in, welcome with open arms.
In short, I TOTALLY support what this guy is doing. Freedom is great, and as I said in another post, I'm having a lot of fun laughing at you idiots who can't tell the difference between a monopoly imposing their will on the masses and a single user promoting, militantly, his beliefs.
Jackass? This is funny as hell. It's even funnier that people can't see the difference between the actions of a monopoly to limit choice versus the actions of a single user to promote his agenda.
Uhh, we were talking about a slim portion of life, that being computers. I should be flattered that you care to ask what I do outside of computers. I won't detail my life, but yes to all of your questions, plus others. I suppose that is what a liberal arts education will get you as opposed to some math/science/engineering degree. You people are making me so sad.
I believe someone already said it best, that is, you are a fucking dumbass. But that aside, I can play the DVD legally if I boot into M$ and run it on my computers DVD player, but if I remain in Linux and run it on the same player, it's illegal? I don't follow.
I do, troll. I can't believe how many clueless people are making their way onto/.. I am very thankfull for people like RMS who remind people that linux is as much a political or moral statement as a technical one. Luckily, or not, gnu software stands on its own technical merits. Where it doesn't it still stands on its own morally or politically.
If Intel really wants to help drive linux, why don't they look at the gcc compiler and submit patches. Or if they are too weak to do that, release their compiler under GNU.
You get what you pay for.
Very true. I pay with my time, conscience and code. What do you pay with. Oh, yeah $. I hope you are proud.
Ahh, don't know if you are going to read this. It was a super cheap Fry's dual joystick, kind of playstation type thing. But it did say "Linux Compatable" on the box. One of these days I'll read up on it all again and try it.
Lately on/. when there is a headline about linux on the desktop, the M$ trolls come out of the wood work Linux isn't ready for the desktop, by a long shot, stop pretending that it is. This isn't news.
OK in the same light, call it trolling if you want, let me say M$ isn't secure. Not by a long shot, please stop pretending that it is or will be soon. Thank you.
Hell, add to that the fact that the guy does less work than any of the Justices. Has sat through trials without adding a single sentence to the discusssion. Is generally regarded as the least qualified guy on the court....
I suppose other than these, plus there being many better qualified conservatives justices who could be doing a better job, there's nothing to dislike about the fellow.
Damn, I kept hearing how cool iTunes was. If what you said is true, that's not that great. Hell, I have grip set up to auto-rip on insert, if it's a new CD. It does the FreeDB lookup, rips to ogg and ejects when it's done.... Total clicks = 0.
Right on. Let me say first off that I'm not a gamer. But I figured with all the talk I should see what it's all about. So I bought a joystick. Spent a couple hours and couldn't get it to work. I've been using Linux since '96 so I can usually get things installed, configured and working. I just figured, hey, this isn't that big of a deal to me, and I suppose I can boot into M$ if I really want to play a game. If it still boots, it's been months since I rebooted.
I love moronic posts like this. Just when I thought/. couldn't get worse, what with all the reckless multiplying of MicroSloth lovers, then we get this. I'm looking for a new place to get intelligent dialoge as opposed to this drivel. Later....
if you're going to be a college student, life is more about creative problem solving than it is about logical
Yeah, I remember my first year in the dorm over a decade ago. A friend of mine had some weed, but neither of us had a pipe or bong. I ended up taking my pocket knife to an apple and we were smoking within 5 minutes. Damn I miss that creative college life...
Nobody can make a mega-corporation like TWAOL better from the inside. Alan can stay with them and be swallowed, thus having NO effect, or he can make a very, very strong statement.
Would you work for Hitler, just because it was a good paycheck? No (hopefully), so there are lines that people draw. Alan has drawn his and I at least support it. While you and others may not agree with where he decided to draw the line, it is wholly appropriate given his past statements and agreement with Free software. Not where all the M$ zealots now infecting/. want it to be, but where it should be.
As time goes by I am more and more impressed by AC for his political views and political statements as much, if not more, for his coding.

This is funny as hell to me. A couple of friends and I used to get in long discussions as to who would win, Kentucky Rednecks or Urban Gangs. We pretty much agreed that the Rednecks would win. Lets see...
Having spent a brief, but enlightening, stint as long haul OTR driver, I can tell you that a lot of drivers have internet connections through their satellite dishes on their rigs.
In short, use their satellite setup (2 or more if you have the money and are really concerned about connection speed), and then configure the router and the network however you normally would.
Technically, this shouldn't be a big deal, especially if you already work as a consultant. That or you are just asking/. to do your homework for you.
Insisting on driving huge behemoths is detrimental to everyone else on so many levels. So, like second hand smoke, I have the right to bitch about moron people.
Really. It is obvious to EVERYONE that this isn't going to work. Napster has been replaced by Morpheus, Gnutella, whatever. Who actually thinks this is going to work? I thought investors were a little scared now. Nothing to see here, move along.
Does no one else see a potential plot here with these nano machines killing off a large portion of the crap/fish/whatever...but there are a few who adapt and join...and now they are bionic...and they're pissed....
It would be nice to have so that when I was checking the surf, if it was firing I could take a shot of the surf, send it to my friends, suit up and hit the water. Quicker and more to the point.
Buddy, I wish that the world was as black and white as you paint it. Yes there are different shades of illegal. If I get caught with a little dime bag of pot, it's a ticket and I walk away. If I get caught with 20 pounds, it's a felony and I'm in deep trouble. Yes they are both illegal. But you must be a moron if you think a guy copying a couple of games that he couldn't afford anyway is the equivalent of mass piracy. That or you just haven't lived long enough to see that the world isn't black and white. It's hard and a lot of people never get there. Good luck.

Please mod this parent up. While I'm not very partison, I really don't need my government trying to legislate either my morality or my research, especially while operating under a premise that gov't should have less involvement in the daily lives of their citizens.
I've sat back and watched Linux become more and more popular. I've sat back and watched more and more M$ fans add their jackass opinions on/.. I've sat back and read so many posts by ignorant CS majors that just make me sad at the state of education right now.
RMS is more important than ever BECAUSE the lines between GPL and proprietary are becoming so blurred. And so many of the assholes on/. seem to think this is OK. People fear, correctly, the extend and embrace predatory practices by M$, but then these same people turn around and defend the mixing of the two camps.
This is bullshit people and down that path is hell. I wish that you weren't all so blind. RMS is right that there is a big freaking idealogical wall there and it should be there.
Really. I dig integrating stuff. But all I want with a freaking watch is to tell time.
I can see the responses:
"Yeah but look you can punch the keys in a half-ass manner and type into it..."
"But look, it can tell the time in 15,000 different capitals..."
"Look how cool my kids look on my watch"
"My watch will be able to call my home and tell my computer to send my email to....blah, blah, blah"
Big freaking difference between a geek and a dork. People who think this type of shit is cool are dorks.
And yes, I'm sure that if everyone thought like me we wouldn't have running water in the kitchen. Fuck you and your black and white world. I'm living in the grey area.
