I wonder if this article could help me get a raise? Anyways, I'm glad this study has been done. I have worked at to many companies that look at IT as a necessary evil instead of the highly efficient tool that it can be. Bravo to the researchers!
"Now there is no assumptions going on here when we see that he wouldn't mind his kid fighting in a war or in a war for our way of life. He just objects to it being about oil. Well, the most dominant anti bush crowds use the slogan of bush lied us into war, and this war is about oil. Many people happen to disagree and it has never been publicly stated that the war was for oil by anyone in the position to control our actions. It is all unfounded conjecture by people wishing to diminish the creditability of the president. Repeating those statements is just an admission of how the op thinks. nothing more or less."
When all over the news they are repeating that this is about oil over and over again people are going to believe it. Whether it is or is isn't people have been blasted with that message for quite some time now. Even though most that believe it are anti Busch it doesn't mean they all are. I can guarantee that some Busch supporters don't agree with the war. Some of his own party have said they don't agree with the war and wonder why we are still in Iraq. So nothing you said proves that particular guy was anti Busch. So are you saying you didn't assume but just applied a stereo type to someone you don't know based on a few sentences?
As for the rest of your post you are absolutely correct. You have some great ideas that could be implemented sooner instead of later. Which is always good. Why couldn't we do the tax breaks along with your ideas? I am not opposed to anyway that would reduce our pollution on the planet. I never said my way was the only way. I fortunately should be able to afford such an undertaking for my residence. I believe that it could be done for much cheaper if you reuse parts instead of buying brand new. I believe with some ingenuity and a lot of duct tape it could be done for say 80,000 or so. Not much cheaper but 20,000 isn't a bad # to shave off. I could be wrong and it cost me even more but only time will tell.
"I find it sad that mass graves filled with mothers and their children is filed under "not our problem". Would you say the same of tsunami or earthquake victims overseas? How about at a state level? Was Texas wrong for taking hundreds of thousands Katrina evacuees? After all, it was Louisiana's problem, not Texas'."
I find it sad we have thousands of people in the US that live on the street despite having jobs. The government refuses to help because they make too much money. Yet if they quit they could get welfare. There are problems all over and we could spend an eternity trying to fix them all. I say we fix the ones here and our solutions would help a lot more. If we found a good way to help the poor it would apply to the poor in other countries too. We could take our knowledge to solve things instead of our guns. it is too bad that horrible things happen but I stand by protecting our own first. I have a great hypothetical question a professor once asked me. You are in a position where you can save either your loved one or a bus load of people you don't know which would you pick? It's a hard choice but most people would pick a loved one. Protecting our own is what George Washington wanted us to do and I think he was right.
Comparing a natural disaster to a highly debatable war in my humble opinion is idiotic at the least. I said take care of our own that means if you live on property controlled by the US you are our own. So why would Texas not tak in people from Louisiana? I also went and helped with my hands and my dollars. I started a campaign for food, clothes, etc at my office and we took 2 truck loads of stuff to Katrina victims. I still donate to charities that are helping down there since our government still has not cleaned up whole neighborhoods. I practice what I preach, do you?
I never said not to help people in trouble I said don't play world cop. A natural disaster is something we should get involved in and I don't think we do enough to help in those areas. Would you say you were playing cop if you pulled over and helped someone change a flat tire? It's called being a Good Samaritan and has nothing to do with policing anything.
"you sir are an idiot." What a highly intelligent way to start a post. I don't like what you said so you don't what you are talking about, brilliant! I'm sure that kind of attitude will help you in life. I however will reframe from such name calling.
"Sure we can stick our head in the sand just like we did in WWII and let the slaughter of millions of people occur and only get into matters when they are their absolute worst and suffer more casualties than we currently are in our afgani/iraq war."
Excuse me but I am missing something here. Why on earth are you comparing WWII to the Afghan/Iraqi war? First I would say were absolutely justified in going to Afghanistan considering we KNEW Al Quaeda was stationed there. The mission there does need to be accomplished and the rest of Al Quaeda there and every where dismantled. Iraq on the other hand was doing nothing. Did I like Saddam no I also did not agree with any of his actions. He was a disgusting dictator who killed his own people on a whim. That doesn't change the fact he had nothing to do with 911 and at the time we went in was pretty quiet within his own borders. He didn't even have any nukes or biological weapons so why are we there? If his people wanted him gone they could have gotten to together and overthrown him. The same thing we did when we got sick of England. The same thing the French did when they got sick of being persecuted by their kings. The same as countless others did through out history. You can't force freedom on someone they have to win it for themselves.
"Like in the good sheppard the statement "we keep the wars small ones" is a true fact. If we let nation states have at it all willy nilly, The jews would be exterminated and their homeland destroyed (though they did a pretty good fending off in the 7 day war back in the day) which you would have help contribute to as the mid-east state are the most powerful in the region with all their oil monies(and don't think that if you DON'T drive a car you aren't using oil, There are millions of thing that use oil/made from oil/or powered from oil like the generator at the power plant your getting your electricy from right now)"
We have no right to keep wars small if we are not asked for help by the people actually fighting. The holocaust was horrible but has no relation to today. That was then and everything was different comparing the 2 is apples and oranges. I do very little to contribute to oil consumption. I don't drive a car. I use very little juice at home; my bill is below 50 bucks a month. Thanks to energy saving bulbs and being very conscience of turning things off and only turning them on when needed. I also strive to use only products that are made of renewable sources and manufactured in eco friendly ways. Once I buy a home I will be installing solar cells and looking at making my own hydrogen. I do everything I can to use as little oil as possible.
"This world could do a lot worse if the US wern't playing global cop. Sorry to inconvience you while you sip on your caffinate beverage of choice but that freedom you so righty feel free to flaunt would be be repressed/squelched if we weren't so villigiant."
Actually I think we would be a lot better off. Our involvement has created some of the worst tyrants that we are now dealing with. We put Saddam in power that is a fact not speculation. We put Castro in power another fact. It seems the US playing world cop hasn't helped much. What good did we do in Korea? After a long bloody war that we lost North Korea is now producing nuclear weapons that possibly have enough range to reach our soil. So what good have we done by playing cop? I also don't drink any caffeine besides the occasional cup of tea. That stuff can kill you.
Last I checked pretty much all parents want to keep kids out of any situation they could be killed in. I don't know a single parent that wants their child fighting in any war. How does this make the guy blinded by hatred for Bush? He just wants his kid to grow old and instead of getting shot. I seriously doubt that anyone saw the last draft coming 10 years in advance which is when his 8 year old would be eligible. If the "war on terror" continues for 10 years a draft would be more likely than today. Especially since the armies numbers for registration are still dropping below what they need. He didn't say there was a draft or there was going to be one. You could argue it was implied but that would be making an assumption and we all know what assuming does. He didn't mention Bush or even the government so how do you know that he hates Busch? You could assume but again not a good choice. I am not opposed to bashing someone but if you do it at least make some sense. It seems to me the only one blinded here is you. I won't make any ASSumptions why though. I'll leave that to people like you.
Back on topic. This is great I hope this gets other people in projects like this. Imagine a whole city powered by the sun and hydrogen! We could leave pretty green in a short amount of time if the government would support projects like this. Not necessarily with dollars but tax breaks on the people that use it and tax breaks on the equipment to make it happen. Say no sales tax on solar panels and other stuff needed for things like this. I for one can't wait for the day I can install a setup like this and tell the local power company to bug off. I currently leave in an apartment so it is not possible right now.
quotes from t0rkm3 (666910) "Sure... acquiesce to the world's body politic and cease to become a sovereign nation. Sounds like a plan."
He didn't say that he said "be less of a dick" to me that means not getting invlolved where we have no business and stop playing world police, one in the same I suppose. I and many other Americans agree with this. We need to fix the problems here before we go galavanting around the globe playing cop.
"Perhaps, nations should keep their own house in order and worry less about what the US is up to and how they could politically extort more money out of the US."
Perhaps the US should do the same thing minus the money part. although I sure feel like I have been Extorted when I see the amount taken out of my check for "taxes" but that's another subject.
"Or the almighty UN might actually try doing something... like rectifying the Darfur situation"
If the US is going to play world cop then why haven't we fixed it. I don't agree with policing the planet but if it's going to go on why not actually help instead of just taking over places that have lucrative natural resources.
", or addressing the fact that Hezbollah attacked Israel as a de facto representative of the Lebanese govt."
They didn't attack our country or our people so what does it matter. The Israelis are far from saints themselves and have done a lot to provoke attacks. I'm not saying the any attacks were warranted just that some were provoked.
" Or perhaps just prosecuting, and investigating aggressively the previous Secretary General for violations of the oil for food program... Considering both his son and brother-in-law have had shady dealings therein."
Good question and I agree with them but the US has enough of it's own shady financial dealings to look into. Haliburton(sp?) is the first one that comes to mind. How many people in our governement have friends and family making a ton off the "war on terror".
"None of this is likely, even as the smug people that complain about USA policy still come to the teat at supper time."
I for one am not coming. I am actively seeking employment outsdide the US because I can no longer live in a place where my rights are slowly being stripped despite having a constitution that is supposed to always protect them. I have gotten invlovled in politics and tried to make changes that way but unless you have a few billion to throw around change is not going to happen. Enough ranting for now hopefully I don't lose karma but I did reframe from using the term ass hat even though I really wanted to.
Really? I found most atms are usually NOT pointed at the street. Most of the ones I have seen are in those stupid boxes, just inside the bank or in the drive thru. All these things make the camera just about useless other than seeing who is at th ATM. I used to travel a lot and this seemed the typical set up. I would say even across the street is pretty close to a business. If someone could see you from that distance with the naked eye I have no issues a camera recording there. I suppose you think stores shouldn't be allowed to put up camera's for protection and insurance purposes? Better yet lets just ban the sale of all mounted cameras. Forget about the fact it helps catch hundreds if not thousands of violent criminals. I don't think every inch of a city should be covered by governement cameras either state or national but to say private institutions and people can't put up cameras is an infringement on our rights. If you want to live some place where you have no rights there are lots of options. I for one will stay here and not worry about the bank camera that may or may not take a picture of me walking down the street.
How about running around 30 large hubs daisy chained together and calling it a network? That is what my current employer had until 5 years ago when we finally but some cisco gear and made a real network. Because of the patchwork nature it was all but impossible to push anything out to the user pcs. Any software upgrade took days since we had to physically go to each and every machine to install by cd. Biggest pain and most bizarre setup I have come across. Not a hack, but bizarre.
Not really but I'm sure this kind of thing exists. Plenty of mutations are not comaptible for life and a lot these mutations are in DNA. It honestly seems like common sense that there are genetic sequences that would cause someone to die. Don't we already know about a lot of these like all the genetic diseases out there that cause death. Like people that are allergic to water or sunlight. Maybe I'm missing something but this doesn't seem to deserve a million dollar budget.
Most all of the cameras were on private property in use by private entities not the government. I see no problem with companies or individuals putting up cameras to protect themselves, employees and property. I honestly don't find that kind of use intrusive at all since in most places to be on camera you have to be on their property or pretty close. Since I am not doing anything wrong I don't have a problem with a shopkeeper recording me 9 out of ten places overwrite old stuff and many places don't even record they just have the cameras up for the deterrence factor. When it becomes intrusive is when you have cameras in places they really shouldn't be, ie bathrooms and dressing rooms. Of course a camera postioned to take pictures of something it shouldn't also falls iunder intrusive, ie up skirt cameras.
It is to bad that more people that create medicine don't think like this guy. We need more people in the world interested in making it better and making a profit not just making a profit.
I have been on slashdot for a while now and that was my first "first post". GO ME! yes uber geek right here, just hand me my black glasses/w tape in the middle and my pocket protector and I'll be on my way. Don't bother modding me off topic. I'll do it for you. **OFF TOPIC** -9999999999999999
I'm sure all eat my words and someone is going to love that overly flashy page but hey for the moment we have a consensus. What i would like to know is how do these places the info is being grabbed from determine threat level? Then again I think I have gotten one virus in the past 8 years. I just don't open emails that I don't recognize and I sure as hell don't download attachements from them. Yes I know you can get virii other ways but that is the most predominant.
Comparing a slaughterhouse to a true hunt is like comparing flying a glider to flying a helicopter. They both invlovle similiar things but are thousands of miles apart on everything else. If you trully paralized not blinded the animal then I say paralize them if at all possible. Being blinded and standing still because of it is not paralyziation it is fear and a natural response for deer and lots of other animals. I would rather have my meat be shot and never know its coming then to have the sh!t scared out of it and then shot. As far as slaughterhouses go they are revolting places that need a drastic update in how they kill, house, and the animals destined for my plate. I get as much meat as possible from local sources that treat thier animals well before being killed. If I could I would hunt all my food that way I know it did not suffer before and it had a nice life of being free before being killed.
My passport doesn't have one but when it is time to get a new one I will definately smash the chip. I already intended to anyway. I know the possibility of someone getting my info off it is slim but it is there. I have dealt with identity theft twice and I sure as hell am not going to take a chance with my passport. Yes I am wearing my tin foil hgat right now.
How on earth did I get labeled troll for poking fun at Steve Ballmer? That and I seriously want to know if they do. Everyone in my company is required to go to the stupid things every other month. I don't know what good it does since people still seem to fly off the handle regularly but then we have never had anyone throw a chair across the room so maybe it does work. To the person that lableled me troll you bite my ass. Now that is a comment worthy og labeling troll you ass hat.
I have actually seen pictures of a deer colliding with a Pick-up. Somehow the poor guy got turned around and his feet went through the windshield. Unfortunately he killed the driver and the passenger kicking trying to get out. He didn't make it and when a forest ranger found them he had to be shot. Deer are tough animals and hitting one with any vehicle is not advisable. Back to the topic, I think this is great people that shoot from the side of the road and use spotlights are scum not hunters. A hunter goes in to the woods and stalks his prey like any predator. Poachers often use tactics that give them far too much of an advantage. Yes hunters have a big advantage too but not as much when following the law. I see no problem with hunting if the animal will be eaten and all the useful parts used. I hate to see stuffed game it's a waste of meat, hide, and life. We must eat to survive and being a vegetarian is not for me. I tried for over a year and craved a piece of steak 70% of the time.
And you would know this how? They didn't say how they got thier #s or how they veruify accuracy if they do at all. Since literally millions of people use a palm and thousands of companies are exclusivlely palm how do you know these #s aren't correct. You claim palm is lying with no more proof than they have to say they aren't. I'll be the first to admit these #s are usually way off but to call them a flat out liar with no evidince of makes you sound kind of stupid. I'm not saying you are, however your statement sounded that way. Back to the topic at hand. I am really glad they did this I really like the palm OS. I have tried windows mobile only to have it lock up, lose data and be very unreliable over all. It could have been the hardware but I have had multiple devices with the same problems. My palm devices however have had very little issues. there are definately some annoyances but no lock ups and reliable. Call me a palm fanboy if you like I would'nt even object. I'm not against other mobile Oses just mobile windows. I do use windows on my desktop alongside a few others. I have no qualms with MS I just don't like the mobile platform.
Ther is only one thing I really really want to ask Bill Gates. Do Microsoft execs have to go through anger management classes? I would really like his honest opinion on that one.
OMG Do all the people that replied to this guy think he was serious? He did it to get you all going and you all took the bait big time. I think this is great and it should be standard for all schools. It never hurt anyone to learn more than they needed. The worst thing that comes out of this is a good size influx to/., these kids may go geek how horrible!(sarcasm in case anyone missed it)
"So really, the biggest selling point of the Wii in this generation of consoles is it's "cheap" price, which is still $300!"
That point alone can cause record sales. Look at places like Dollar Tree everything is pretty much crap and not worth a dollar but they sell tons because it's cheap.
As far as graphics Nintendo stated from the beginning this was no where near the power house the other consoles would be. They focused on fun, which is what the other consoles should be doing.
I could careless if my console can play dvds and connect to my computer. The average household isn't going to use the computer connect functions anyway. I know lots of people with a 360 and only 2 out of the 20 or so use the media center functions. Most didn't even know it had them. The average consumer is rather slow and they don't read half the packaging and you can forget about the manuals.
I want a game sytem to play games not stream music. I have other devices for that. A game console should be just that for games. The Wii is something differnet which hasn't been done since consoles started they were all the same thing just better graphics. movement takes consoles one step closer to becoming all immersive.
Why not just wipe out around half the population of the planet and start this little society experiment all over. This time around has turned out to be an absolute failure.
Last I checked this is exactly how evolution works. A new predator was introduced and having short legs helped the lizards escape them. It only makes sense that short legged lizards would breed more since the long legged ones got eaten. The only thing I can see this proves is that evolution can happen faster than we previously thought. Am I missing the break through here or are these scientists smoking something?
"Which means two things, first that (if you have a HDTV, which I don't) it'll look prettier."
This is something I hear people repeating over and over that is completely untrue. I have a 15+ year old TV from a hotel and my 360 looks great on it. I admit, it would look better on a plasma but even on the old TV it looks ten times better than my Xbox. So many of my friends told me I wasted money on the 360 since I didn't have HD and once they saw it they ate their words. I know I'm not getting the full "experince" using iton an old TV but it still looks better than the last generation console on the same TV. Back to the topic. The only reason I bought the 360 was for specific games. I didn't see any games on the PS3 that made me really want to play and the high price tag didn't help at all. The Wii however has some games that really look like a lot of fun and the back catalog of games makes me smile just thinking about it. The controller puts it over the top for me. I don't know how often I have found myself yanking the controller one direction or the other even though moving did nothing for my gameplay. Integrating movement is genius and I can't wait to play. Although I won't be getting one at launch I'm going to Europe instead. Yes I know I can't go to Europe on 300 bucks but it is 300 more I will have to spend while I'm there.
I wonder if this article could help me get a raise? Anyways, I'm glad this study has been done. I have worked at to many companies that look at IT as a necessary evil instead of the highly efficient tool that it can be. Bravo to the researchers!

GO ME! yes uber geek right here, just hand me my black glasses /w tape in the middle and my pocket protector and I'll be on my way. Don't bother modding me off topic. I'll do it for you. **OFF TOPIC** -9999999999999999
This looks like something that will keep me occupado for quite a few nights.
The worst thing that comes out of this is a good size influx to /., these kids may go geek how horrible!(sarcasm in case anyone missed it)
"So really, the biggest selling point of the Wii in this generation of consoles is it's "cheap" price, which is still $300!"
