I can see the headlines now "Conductive Plastic Accidentally Used On Electrical Tools", hilarity ensues. On another note this could a be a huge boom for lots of industries. Too bad we will probably all be dead and gone by the time it is actually useful.
Not my post but the article, well hopefully not my post. How on earth could a $600 device replace one that can be purchased for less than $200? They cater to different markets and definitely different tax brackets. The Iphone may replace an mp3 player or 2 but I am sure the market is safe.
By the logic they use it would only save more money if the hardware itself was not the high end stuff that demands lots of juice. If you already own equipment that needs the juice switching to Linux wouldn't do a whole hell of a lot for you. I do love Linux and wish more people used, but I don't think trying to make it look green when it isn't really any different than other OSs in that regard. Just more politico attention grabbing headlines.
Absolutely right. Nothing is wrong with digital it all depends on the medium. I have seen hard drives take a beating but after sending them to a clean lab to have the platters put in a fresh case everything was recovered. Yes it costs a ton but holds up well over the years and even with some severe damage can be recovered. Also as already stated by those before me, if you use just cd/dvd for archiving you are asking for it. Even my personal pc is backed up to 3 different sources. An external hard drive, dvd, and magnetic tape. The external hard drive doesn't even live at my place it is stored at a friends in a different state. No natural disaster barring something that wipes out half the US is going to make me lose a single byte of data. If I as a loan individual go this far why isn't every company on the planet? It would be a pain for me to lose files but wouldn't destroy my financial lively hood vs a company that depends on the data for survival.
This is a civil case! Your analogy using a speeder is worthless. I am not surprised Viacom has infringed other people's copyright. Any user submitted video site is going to unless you could afford thousands of people to relentlessly research every submission. Even then stuff is going to slip by. The only reason Youtube is a target is because Google has deep pockets. If this was Joe Blow running something out of his basement and not making a dime there would be a fraction of the lawsuits. As usual it is all about the benjamins.
I wonder how many people are going to get caught with their vehicle parked in front of the local nudie bar or XXX book store and will have to explain things to a spouse. Another issue could be how do they verify the data is from the business owner and not someone with a grudge or unscrupulous competitor. Great idea though, being able to see the front of the place could really help when looking for a building I have never been to.
Then you very well may be out of work if you are employed by a major company then. I also specifically said as long as the ads are not invasive. Everything you sighted is exactly the worst case scenario I said could happen. Did you miss all the references to ads in other games that people thought were well integrated and matched the surroundings? When was the last time you watched a movie product placement is huge. I just filmed a short film myself by an independent director and we had product placement. ****Warning shameless plug**** The movie is "Our Children Our Land" and it will be in Canne Film Fest this year. The placement was for a particular type of whiskey. I wasn't paid enough to plug the whiskey here but the movie isn't too shabby. I have also seen product placement in plenty of plays as well. As I said the first time if it is done well most won't mind.
As long as the ads are done well I don't care if they are in my game. We see all kinds of stuff in games that would normally have an ad on it in real life. I don't know how many games have fake ads for products that don't exist to ad to the realism. It doesn't make a difference to me if the vending machine my character walks by says Soda or Cocoa-Cola. Honestly if done correctly in game advertising could really add to the realism of games. Yes it could be very easily overdone and become invasive but if done correctly it could improve games. How you say? Extra income! If the game developers themselves got cash for incorporating real world products in games they could spend more money developing the games and afford to hire better talent. This could be a very good thing for games then again if done wrong it could be the worst thing ever. Only time will tell.
Actually you can do all of those things. The cops will not arrest you for saying any of that in front of them. It is up to the person you said it to press charges. I have called a friend a lesbian and we worked together but she didn't press charges because she was a friend. If a cop heard me say it to her I wouldn't have gone to jail. Even if she was offended she would have to go through the courts. Like I said in my first post it is one of the reasons we have courts.
"Mathematicians generally dont buy hard drives so they have no reason to complain about it."
They do if they build their own pieces like all the ones I worked with did. Most mathematicians I know are geeks and they like computers just as much as #s. So maybe you just aren't hanging out with the right mathematicians.
People might say a lot of things that are mean and hurtful but that is part of having free speech. I agree you shouldn't be able to yell fire in a crowded building just for the hell of it. You should however be able to talk bad about someone and if it's slander the courts will decide, that is what they are for. As many people ahead of me already stated you can't have degrees of free speech either it is or it isn't.
These mini PCs are not going to boot laptops in any time soon. I personally don't think they ever will. One smart phones get better why use one of these giant pieces of hardware?
"I mean, cmon, get real. We are so far out from needing "robot ethics" that drafting a charter now borders on SK being "attention whores"."
I wouldn't say they were attention whores since some people in Europe are already doing the same thing. It is even mentioned in the article.
It may be far ahead of its time but by starting the debate now maybe we can have some sort of agreement by the time it is necessary. We need more far forward looking people in power. We shouldn't spend too much effort on it but it is good to have some basis for future debate on what may some day be a very heated issue.
WHO CARES?!? I have worked with mathematicians that did not squabble over these terms so why the hell are we?!? My mother who can hardly turn a computer on knows damn well that 1000 megabytes is roughly 1 gigabyte. Now lets get back to the topic. It seems Google would have some brilliant way to push a terabyte through the "tubes" instead of just mailing drives, how archaic.
I am definitely an AMD CPU fan boy but the corp itself I have no loyalty too especially with stuff like this going on. I doubt few major corporations have a valid working archive of all emails sent and received. I worked for a decent size corp for years, around 1500 employees with email, and server side we retained 7 days at the most. It would cost a ton and if the allegations are true in Intel's case wouldn't help to have those emails anyway. As stated earlier this is just typical lawyer tactics. It still leaves AMD in a not so great light.
That for lack of a better term royally sucks. These draconian laws are going to send us back to imperial states if they keep this up. Whatever happened to free speech? Oh and who ever has mod points should give the last guy a +informative. I would but I obviously can't.
I can see the awesome retro mods dancing through my head already. Ah if only they weren't going to cost a small fortune. I'm not basing price on anything other than most "gaming" PCs are overpriced. I would pick one up just to tear it apart and rebuild it. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. This does bring back some great memories of playing with Commodores when I was a kid. Boot up wait half an hour, load game wait half an hour, and then play till your eyes bleed.

You are right that Apple's iPhone is getting closer but even with all the fancy stuff it has it is no where near as inter operable as the parent post described. I can't wait to get one myself they just look too cool and the display and touchscreen is kinda mind blowing. They however won't connect to any device other than a PC or Mac and then only with the right software. You can't just dump data on them like they are a flash drive or use them to dump pictures on from a camera or similar device.
I don't think any of the gadget makers have any interest in a true all in one device. They would make tons of money at first but what happens when most people have a great all in one device? Sales will fall and a new model won't help too much since the last one already did everything and well. Let's say Sony makes the super PDA/Phone/Video-Still Camera/Storage device. Since Sony already makes things in most of these categories they are severally limiting themselves in what you would normally spend. They could really only charge around $200-$300 to make the device feasible for most people and that price still alienates a large part of consumers just in the US. Considering most people would normally spend that on just a camera you can see how much money they lose on a true universal gadget. I stand by the the reasoning that we don't have truly universal gadgets is because of the almighty dollar. This is of course my humble opinion and I admit that some company might have such a device in the works. I just hope it's not Sony I would prefer my dream gadget not burst into flames.
If this group was within the law they should have stood up and refused to take the site down. Better yet hand it off to someone in another country so they couldn't be prosecuted under Australian law. I would gladly go to jail for something I believe in. We need more people on this planet willing to bite the bullet and really fight back.
It may not win in looks, or processing power, or graphics, or any thing for that matter but it was a neat project. They guy spent some real time piecing things together with chips instead of just using a mini itx board. The fact he made his own language to program it is a definite plus. It isn't something I would make myself but a nice DIY project none the less. I don't quite get what all the complaints are about even if it is a glorified calculator he built it himself. When was the last time any of you built something starting with just a handful of chips?

Money friend it all comes down to money. If things were as inter operable as you described we wouldn't need to buy as many gadgets as we do. The manufacturers aren't going to make things easy for us not in the sense you are talking about. To do that they would lose profit and heaven forbid they don't make their billions. I do feel your pain I am waiting for that day myself. I think by the time it comes I'll be a wrinkled old man and I'm only in my late twenties.
I like the concept and yes I know it's nothing new. I hope this thing takes off I would love to be able to just snap a single chip into place than have to deal with gigantic video cards. ALthough I suppose we would end up with more heatsinks on the mobo this way but at least my PCI slots wouldn't be so crowded.

I know but using actual Commodore components in a Commodore case makes the mod so much cooler. I guess I'm a bigger geek than I thought.
