Yet, the person who is most technically adept at said company won't let me have the passwords to the Windows 9x workstations!
There are utilities that will yank those right out of the registry for you:) I'm in a similar situation to you in that I'm sort of the keeper of the Linux boxes on a mostly windows network, but here's my take on it. In my opinion I shouldn't have any passwords other than my own period. My company sort of forces them on me since "people might forget them". Not like it matters since I can get half of them within an hour with John the Ripper, but it's the principle of the thing. Passwords aren't meant for having one person in control of everything, they're meant to verify that you are really you. If she doesn't get this, then i'd just hit escape anyway =P

SVHTTF: has anyone reported any cases of identity theft?
Yeah, the same guy did three times. but he seems to get plastic sergery a lot so he's hard to identify.
.It is the *one* browser that renders pages in the same manner across all supported platforms. IE does not do this for example between the mac and Windows.
That's one of the big reasons I've totally given up on IE. I made a page where the text size/font was pretty tight and required strict CCS in order to look correct (not smart, but it looked really cool). I tested it on IE to make sure it looked good and well. Only I found that it rendered slightly different on my girlfirend's machine. Exact same version of IE, exact same resolution. The difference: I tested on Win98SE she used WinME.

Of course, none of these examples fit the 8 char limit
(Speaking in Linux terms) 8 character passwords are the default on a Linux system only if you don't have something like shadow passwords - which allows up to 256 characters if I remember correctly. I don't think there are any Linux distros that don't use shadow passwords by default and haven't been for a while.
Well I ask you this, if the passwords are already preset to a default, wouldnt that leave the same problem?
Well there are ways around that. As the above poster stated; Linux asks you for a password during an install. I don't see why they don't issue a different password with each copy. Seems to me it wouldn't be all that hard to give a piece of paper with the serial number AND the default password (both unique for each install). If you don't like the cryptic 14 character (or whatever) password, you change it manually.
that's one of the core philosophies behind Unix, and another reason why most people don't like it - too complex. While most people would agree that a swiss army knife is no real replacement for a good screwdriver and a hack-saw, when it comes to computers, they want everything shoved into a heap and done for them. I'd say thats one of the reasons that Unix hasn't quite caught on. In windows you push a search button for something, in Unix you pipe find into grep. The windows solution doesn't have anywhere near the power, but for most people it's more convinient.
In my opinion I'll never use a console for anything but single player gaming because of the keyboard. I'm not sitting in front of my TV with a keyboard - two remotes are bad enough, and at least my computer has a desk. And IMHO, online gaming has no point unless you can type at someone.
You see it over and over again, 'Private Ryan' was actually the story of a British soldier from Coventry, and it happened before the US even entered the war
Um... so the US wasn't even involved in D-day? There's a difference between saying that a story is (loosly) based off of another, and saying that they just changed the characters from British to American because the film was made in the US.

Are you serious? I mean who would be stupid enough to go for that? That's as much as my web hosting, and I get 5 pop3 mail addresses with unlimited aliasing. (And yes I can check it from the web too).
1. Partitioning my hard drive effectively in Windoze
If you want to spend even more money, I highly recommend Partition Magic. It will allow you to resize existing windows partitions. Most of my partitioning experience with resizing existing partitions comes from using fips, which has blown up more times than I can remember. If I were you I'd try to find myself an old junker Pentium 200Mhz or more (as long as the thing can boot off of a CD). That way you can blow up the whole hard drive and laugh it off and continually reformat the thing, or nuke the system. Believe me, you'll be a lot more brave trying dangerous stuff when you don't have to worry about your critical stuff. If you ever totally convert to Linux, you can just use it for a firewall or something
The problem is that they're mac users. They've been programed for years to move the floppy disk into the trash icon in order to eject it. Now the CD won't eject and they throw the Mac in the trash. But it still doesn't come out.
In any event it's a sad day when an OS with a Unix core is bought to it's knees by the likes of Celine Deon.
Feh... screw the honest life. I'm going to go record a TV program and fast forward through all the commercials. Then I'm going to go play my guitar - and I'm going to play copyrighted songs I don't even own the rights to! "The man" has been bringing me down long enough. My crime spree knows no limits!
Besides - if all your old hardware gets too slow - buy a few more and beow.... you get the idea:D
That's why I'm not too worried. Even if they do build this stuff into hardware, I have a perfectly good computer right now. Just network with the old one and do all your ripping/encoding from there. What are they going to do? Stop you from playing music entirely? Dissallow movies to be played?
It could be an upshot for people who can build a system without this protection - although it may be illegal. I'm sure many people would pay a bit more for that type of computer. Right now I want to buy a DVD player, but unfortunately I can't just buy any DVD player, I have to shop around online at shops I don't really trust. Why? Because I live in the U.S. and I want to play DVD's in region 2. Apparently I must be a criminal because I have to buy hacked hardware just to watch foreign movies that aren't released here (and buying imports isn't cheap either). What pisses me off is that I haven't even done anything wrong. I'm guilty by default. If I have to pay a bit more so I'm not getting screwed by the system, then that's what I do.
Although the card looks cool, I'll wait for a little while. If ATI has shown me one thing, it's that it doesn't matter how good the card is if the drivers totally suck. At the place I work we have a few old Matrox cards, and I have yet to have any of the drivers provided by Matrox actually install. But that might be because they're older cards *shug*.
Actually I have a friend who will drool over this card. He already has dual monitors, and has been itching for a third for a while now. It actually works rather slick with Photoshop. One screen for image editing, the other screen for pallets and such.

If you pay ~$15,000 to a worker to handle a $1.5B piece of equipment you need to reevaluate your spending priorities
You do realize that the United States military is founded on those spending priorities don't you?
Can I uninstall Pinball in WinXP? I was going through my Win2k machine deleting junk the other day, and looked at my logs:
"Pinball.exe has been restored to maintain system stability"
Me: ehh.....
Because it is fucking your wife at this moment. :)

We have a similar term where I work. Every time we look at how much we pay for MS software we like to say we just got "bent over" :)

So American can amuse themselves in line by watching what happens when geeks are exposed to the sun?

As long as Sega and Microsoft are in bed
And what an ugly kid that would be...
You know, if Sun used Star Office themselves (and obviously didn't charge themselvs), they'd probably break even just for not using MS Office.
