Your post depicts the bias I often encounter pitching my Open Slate project. Imagine hundreds of high school kids with trumpets, flutes, and drums. Imagine hundreds of kids playing football, baseball, and soccer. Imagine thousands of kids playing massively multiplayer online games. The result is not a nightmare, although it probably intrudes on your comfort zone. Do not dismiss teenagers for failing to act like adults -- make the most of their strengths.
The goal must be open source content. My Chalk Dust concept lays out a structure in which such projects could be undertaken. Since developing those ideas, the Wiki technology has offered an interesting and useful alternative solution. My contention is that good content must go far beyound web pages. In fact, it should look a lot like Final Fantasy XI.
It seems likely that the textbook metaphor will not make the best of the available technology. TV shows, music videos, and video games point to different ways to convey ideas that will replace "walls of text."
Perhaps you would care to join my Open Slate Project? All we need is a few energized people and it can happen, despite the reluctance of educators and textbook publishers.
Once he came on board, Byte started degenerating into yet another PC rag.
Jerry Pournelle had the refreshing idea of not trying to pass himself off as a tech wizard. This in a field dominated by CS majors, circuit board fabricators, and mathematicians. He was a writer who saw the potential of a good text processing system combined with a general purpose computer.
The demise of Byte had nothing to do with Jerry. Byte refused to become a IBM-PC rag in a market that had become polarized, between the mighty IBM-PC on one side and the esoteric Mac on the other. How to decipher mystery keyboards was no longer relevant. Advertisers went elsewhere.
My two favorite issues were the ones introducing C and Smalltalk. I got hooked on both after reading those. Thanks, Byte, for all the great memories (yes, pun intended).
if a random stranger walked up to you on the street and said that they were a representative from your bank and said that they must verify your account information otherwise they will have to close down your account, you would tell them to fuck off, walk away, and maybe even call the police on them
Don't blame this sort of thing on computers. This kind of social engineering scam has been around forever. Old people are especially vulnerable. Little old ladies are talked into withdrawing their life's savings and handing it to a complete stranger in order to help apprehend a crook, only the would-be law enforcement agent never returns.
I get my hands on the asshole who wrote this thing
Actually, we have Gates and Co. to thank for their delightful little registry database that makes it all possible. Invisible values... Why can't my bank offer that service?
The GPL takes its power from copyright law. This is a patent issue. AFAIK, for patents there is no equivalent to the GPL. Actions such as this may lead to the solution.
The video must not contain pornographic or obscene material.
It appears that Google has eliminated the one thing sure to bring about a successful outcome. Imagine if Sony had placed such a restriction on the use of the VHS tape format -- it would have gone the way of quadraphonic sound The Internet just isn't fun anymore!
The artists deserve the money they get for their music.
True, except that the pop music industry's financial model is based on most performers getting a very small percentage of record sales. Sort of like how Blockbuster counts on getting late fees.
Consumers, shut the fuck up... You've been getting a free ride for far longer.
I would argue that record producers have been riding on the backs of musicians for far too long.
I believe the parent's assumption is that the fund sorce is ignorent. For pay-per-click ads:
The service provider offers a sweet sounding pay-per-click deal
The advertiser signs up
The service provider uses dirty tricks to enhance click volume
Advertiser has inflated bill to pay, but has no idea anything bad has happened
The other big market is surf watching. In this case the malware records web visits. The agregated data is sold to businesses, for marketing evaluation. The purchasers have no idea any unethical means were used to gather the data.
The destructive nature of this activity is beginning to be common knowledge, and, like other forms of destructive behavior, businesses will take steps to avoid it.
That's when religious fundamentalists will move in and use the same tactics to assert their views. Maybe this is happening already?
Yes and no. Notes convey two types of information, pitch and duration. Rests only convey duration. So, when assessing rhythm, notes and rests are of equal significance. Melodies are recognized by both pitch sequence and rhythm, so rests contribute to the nature of a melody that is subject to copyright. A melody composed only of rests is a non-melody. Cage's 4'33" is best viewed as a performance piece, more like a dance than music. AFAIK, coreography is not covered by copyright. Pianist friends tell me it is very hard to perform.
I have a married friend (female) who's mother-in-law lived with them. They did not get along. The mother-in-law went to court to get a restraining order, against the daughter-in-law, and took her son along to help. He did. The mother-in-law was surprised that she had to move out, and the husband was surprised that his wife was angry with him.
Right idea but poorly stated. The U.S. Constitution was designed to limit the concentration of power in the federal government, and to prevent states from reaching past those limitations. The federal doctrine of separation of church and state (i.e., government), just to pick one example, cannot be overruled at the state or local level. As for the civil war, those that disagreed with the federal government taking power away from the states, er, lost.
History does not agree. Consider Microsoft's patents on CIFS, which they used to attack Samba and the GPL. Below is taken from this 2002 CNET news article.
Early history of CIFS
The relationship between Samba and Microsoft wasn't always so contentious. In 1996, when Microsoft was just introducing CIFS, it had to contend with competition such as the Sun-Novell alliance behind Sun's WebNFS software. Microsoft at that time pledged that it was "making sure that CIFS technology is open, published and widely available for all computer users," and it noted that Samba used CIFS.
Microsoft submitted the first version of CIFS to the Internet Engineering Task Force at the time, a first step in the standardization process. That process went nowhere, but a 1997 version of that submission is still available on the Internet. The submission made no mention of two related patents, which Microsoft received in 1993 and 1995. In addition, Microsoft shared information in a series of CIFS conferences that began in 1996.
The patents, however, rose to prominence this year.
In the technical document describing CIFS in Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft prohibits companies from using the information in software covered by the GPL, which includes Samba. Microsoft requires readers of the document who plan to implement its description to sign a license agreement that raises the specter of patent infringement.
Specifically, the agreement grants a company a royalty-free license to two Microsoft patents but prohibits the developer from using the CIFS information in software that would subject that company to "intellectual property rights-impairing licenses," including the GPL.
As porn is the depiction of sex, "armadillo porn" refers to drawings, photos, movies, or textual descriptions of armadillo sex. Here, armadillo is a conjunction of "arm" and "dildo." Some experts are of the opinion that this is a direct reference to fisting, but most prefer the more common practice of female stimulation with an artificial phalus, a "dildo," applied with gusto using powerful arm movements, usually by a partner. Note: generous amounts of lubricant are required. Sex Wax sounds ideal, but surprisingly, many wome rate it poorly.
I find it odd that "Pentium" combines the sacred feminin five (pentagram) with a Latin suffix usually used with neuter nouns. The de-sexed female. How sad, and yet so very American.
Obviously this caught the attention of some rather clever people, who have succeeded in finding positions of influence in Intel and whos goal is to restore women to their rightful place. Thus, the new logo
VIIV
is two women holding hands. For Intel's next offering I expect we will see
Not if the car were ordered with the optional Body Online Digital System (BODS), which includes seats with built-in Waste Effluent Trasport (WET) and a high speed parallel port to plug in a Sybian as an I/O accessory. With these options you can come and go all day, but you have to be careful not to over-do it or you'll WET your BODS.
Sony is rumored to be developing a life-like female-looking robot that can ride the BODS without the limitations imposed by the WET. This should be a must-have toy for/.ers, who according to conventional wisdom cannot expect to share their BODS with a real woman. MegaTokyo'sPing is an early prototype.
Great link... thanks! And why would I want to fly a kite? My advice to people who can read rot 13 would be to go find a warm, red-blooded MOTOS and fire some synapses.
The fallacy in this argument is that someone could spend ten years secretly developing an algorithm that blows the doors off of anyone else's. The truth is that progress happens in smaller steps, and goes faster and is more successful when ideas are shared and work is done by groups of programmers. Give us some examples of great software patents that reflect more than a year's effort. I'll start this off with one, the RSA patent. That thing crippled the U.S. in the PKI field for years. RSA did not take off until after the patent expired.
Goals are nice, and 2050 is a nice round number to aim at. I think it would be great if they reach their goal. I wish Hawaii, where I live, would set such a goal. But I do not want to achieve such a goal through heavy handed laws that force people to change, or tax breaks that give an unfair advantage to alternative energy. I want oil to loose because people choose alternatives on their own merits.
Too many network configuration steps that can get in the way of this working, and the network needs to be up for ssh to work.
Far more likely to have a working COM1 port.
What makes the original premise so strage sounding is that the default use of the PC's built-in keybord and video display are already distortions of the original tty port design of Unix. To catch a VGA monitor signal in order to view a character stream is just broken.
As much as I'm against the Big Brother state, I gotta say it's a little absurd to expect privacy while you're on the road.
The parent claims to be against a police state, yet sees nothing wrong with police state tactics. This I believe reflects the views of many Americans.
The drafters of the U.S. constitution came from a European tradition in which government, military, and police were a seamlss union, where the aristocracy routinly used the powers of the police and military to retain their control of government. A fundamental property of the proposed government was that its officials stand for review through frequent public elections. Taken as a whole, the people were less likely to be corrupted by political power than an individual, family, or small groups of cooperating families. Left to its own, any government will end up using the defensive powers of its police and military to oppress the general population. The three branches of the federal government, the clear deliniation of and limitations to the powers they wield, and the limits on the federal government's ability to intrude on the rights of the states, all were designed to shakle the government's power, to keep the beast at bay.
Government hates its chains. The return to old world totalitarianism will not happen when the beast gives one mighty heave and brakes its bonds. It will happen slowly, by erosion of wind and water. Unless we maintain our vigilence, one day the beast will be free and the President will become the Emporer/Sultan/Fuerer. In the name of God.
People do have an expectation of privacy on the road. That is why the line "I think someone is following us" has any signifigance. That is why people get restraining orders. That is why women charge men with stalking. Why drivers hate automated stop sign monitors and speed traps. Even though the level of privacy is not as high as when taking a dump, or having sex, or picking that scab off the top of your head, even so it is there.
Now, in this case, did the police have probable cause? Based on the story it sounds as though they may have. Who is the best judge of that? The men and women who are sworn to be neutral and have years of experience in this area, the people the constitution entrusted with such awesome power -- the courts. Spend a few minutes filling out an application, get on the calendar, make your case. If the judge agrees, go nail the perp's ass.

A large, distributed flock of Apple IIs. There are still a lot of them out there, and Apple did say they would be "forever."

I think you would be more satisfied with a Canon. With automatic exposure. Why not go for the motor drive?
