I run some ad-supported sites, and if they die off because the visitors use ad-blockers, so be it. "Them's the breaks." In short, no one owes me anything, and if my site visitors decide to use an ad-blocker, that's fine with me.
Deciding that you do value their content, but you're not willing to accept their revenue model is hypocritical
I am totally, 100% fine with that. I will continue to block ads and if a site doesn't like that they can implement technical measures to stop me or sue me or send someone to break my kneecaps. I am hoping that my adblocker soon routes around the damage on sites like Forbes. I don't want to see ads and I do want to use the web and I will continue to block ads and if it kills some sites I think that's great. That will definitely encourage some sites to pursue alternate revenue streams.
The thing about hypocrites is we really don't care if we are hypocritical! D
Folks that want higher quality? That want the extras? Folks with data caps? Folks that want stuff after the streaming service drops it? Folks don't want to be tracked or pay a monthly fee?
Filibustering is not the way it should have ever been done, either, though. It's simply a procedural brain fart that the Senate came up with long ago. It ought to be simply a vote.
There is no "us." If people feel they are threatened, by all means let them band together for common defense, at the expense of themselves and whoever they can persuade to join them. Let those who disagree decline to participate and decline to fund it.
If the lack of somebody doing a particular job does not cause any harm, then the job is really a no-show job and should be eliminated--what kind of anarchist wants to keep a government job around that is clearly unnecessary?
That is my entire point. Let's try out not having a President for four years and see if everybody likes not getting into wars as much as I do. Maybe we'll just keep it that way.
I have no clue why you are bringing up apathy and cynicism because it has nothing to do with what I believe and practice. Not voting is not the same as apathy. That's just one of the lies that the democracy meme tells to keep itself firmly infected in the population. Democracy inevitably leads to failures that are blamed on the apathetic just as communism inevitably leads to failures that are blamed on slackers and ruiners.
Thanks, Logan! I was figuring it was in the story somewhere or a story I missed. Welcome to Slashdot - may your tenure here be long and fantastic, and may the omelet be tasty as a result.
BTW, I had to wait to post this because I posted just 58 seconds ago in another story, so if you are looking for some settings to fiddle with...:)
Still waiting after 3 minutes... I know this just means I talk too fast...
I'm an anarchist and I don't vote. I would vote if I could vote for "none of the above." I think every race should have the option of voting to leave the office vacant for a term so everybody can try it out and see if we like living without that elected official and the pain he or she inflicts on us.
Logan, this is probably the dumbest question, but how do I know that Logan Abbott owns the whipslash account here? Maybe this is obvious somewhere and I'm missing it...
Online Ad Czar Berates Adblockers As Freedom-Hating 'Mafia'
Yes, that's me. I'm a jerk, and I'm the mafia, and I block your ads, and I'm the end of Western Civilization as you know it, and worst of all I don't even care.
The easy solution to this is to not be friends with someone anymore if they do this to you. Taking it to a court of law is a far worse offense than the spam from a friend.
Exactly. That amount gets defined based on who is willing to purchase the other currencies and how much they are willing to pay for it, which in turn is based on what they can do with the currency they are purchasing.
The novel Time Will Run Back has some great sections hinting about this, particularly when it explains arbitrage between different markets. It's not a literary masterpiece, but it's very interesting. The setting is a lot like 1984.
Thank you for posting this - it's good to hear someone else say it. Binks was a bit too much and I have some other things I wish were done different in the prequels, but I like them, and Binks is clearly in the tradition of Star Wars comic relief (even to the point of using lines C-3PO used in the original trilogy).
Side note: in the next room, my kids are singing a rousing chorus of Weird Al's "The Saga Begins" as I type this.
My take is that these types of nag screens are supposed to be blocked by one of my adblock filters, so I reported the problem to adblock. I'm sure they will eventually find a way to block it so I can read articles there again, especially if lots of us report it!:)
The web is killing the publishing industry, and I do not agree with the notion that we are entitled to content without paying them, either directly or by looking at ads
I'll continue to view whatever I can get my hands on and blocking ads. If they have a problem with that they can look into implementing technical solutions to require me to pay or whatever, or they can pursue some legal thing, or send a thug to break my kneecaps (basically the same as legal solutions), or go out of business and leave the web to everybody else.
Vote? Seriously? And your voice will be heard and count?? Pull the other one!
People want change and they love an underdog.
Too bad Neo always turns out to be just another level of control.

I love people like you.

By any and all possible interpretations of the law, he is guilty
What about the interpretation where the jury decides whether or not the law should be enforced?

For everything else, there's piracy.

There is nothing right wing about mises.org
The above analysis is completely flawed. For a better understanding of the gold standard, see https://mises.org/money.asp
You can already ignore anonymous cowards.

I absolutely believe in unanimous consent.

Social justice warriors have always wanted to steal nerd culture.
Nerds were posting about rights on slashdot before the term SJW was even born.

Your analysis completely leaves out the imperialist interventions that create the environment where people would want to employ terrorism.
