  1. Interesting how the message does change... on Telcos Propose 2-Tier Internet · · Score: 1

I agree that Bellsouth and AT&T are trying to gain an advantage that will stick it to smaller companies and consumers...

I also think it is interesting how words change slightly as you change sources:

    Article Title:

Telecoms want their products to travel on a faster Internet

    Slashdot Link:

telecom carriers' own Internet services would be transmitted faster and more efficiently... than those of their competitors.'

Notice how the article title makes them sound like benevolent companies looking to improve the Internet for us all?

I think the Slashdot assessment is closer to being correct. (The truth is always somewhere in the middle.) But these two companies don't have a lock on the infrastructure like AT&T once did. They just happen to have very large customer bases which would give them tremendous short term influence. Given enough time and the revelation to customers that they can get better and cheaper services from other companies... Their customer base will erode. AOL tried to devise cute proprietary ways of delivering media to their customers. That didn't mean enough to retain customers...

Bellsouth and AT&T can fight over goofy ways to re-structure how data moves... If it doesn't get shot down, someone will deliver content faster and cheaper outside of their proposed plans.

I don't think this will hold up, or be a relevant solution for these companies long term... But feel free to write a congressman.

One thing that is nice about having people use web based e-mail is that there may be fewer points where information can leak out. If you're not using POP and SMTP to access your mail you don't have to worry about configuring your client to ensure security. It also means that people won't be running outlook express, and you don't have to update and patch all those desktops out there.

But I don't know if that means that most business users will move over to web-based. There are too many convenience reasons to have a client on the desktop... Outlook is way too complex for most users, Evolution is pretty nice but is in danger of getting too much like Outlook. I am really liking how Mail and iCal work together on OS X... I think all the Mozilla apps are headed that way, and are much more mature in their configurability standing alone.

My question... How can you convince users to give up Outlook, Entourage, and Evolution in favor of simple one function applications that tie together in a loose fashion?

If they can get to me, I would expect them to be hitting more than 26% of their customer base. It doesn't surprise me however that some A-C asswipe would troll on my contribution of a piece of information that illustrates my experience as an actual customer.

You can't say that for many other optical or magnetic storage media of odd sizes. Zip Disks, SuperDisks, Jaz Drives... I think that market pressures are exerting change on the music industry. We're just seeing some of the last efforts to capitalize on business models that are outmoded.

Meanwhile... the oil thing... there are some legitimate reasons we are paying more for oil... I still think that we are paying too much. The price of the crude commodity is up maybe 33% from last year. 20% of our refining capacity has been effected by recent events... But we're looking at 100% price increase on the finished product from last year...There is no real incentive for any one company to lower their prices right now, increase refining capacity, etc. This is a hypothetical situation...

What if we stopped buying from the largest oil company inside the US? What is we stopped buying any gasoline from only Exxon Mobile? Would their supplies increase enough and their profits drop enough to make them want to lower their prices to draw customers back?

It's something that I don't know enough to comment on, but I'd love to hear from someone with a degree in economics.

I think that we need to change our habits in this country, but I also think that it's perfectly fair for us to fight back as consumers and exert our buying power to change things on the short term too. It is way over simplified, but it's like AOL getting it's ass kicked for offering internet access at $20, and others offering nearly the same product at $15, $10, or less. Eventually AOL, Exxon, Warner Music or any other business is left with a choice... adapt... or die.

Of course it may be even worse for the giant to die, but I'd be willing to see what poking it with a pointy stick does...
