FreeBSD Logo Contest Winner Announced

Saint Aardvark writes "Earlier this year, the FreeBSD people announced a competition to design a new logo. Welp, the winner has been announced, and you can check out the new logo. Congratulations to Anton K. Gural on the spiffy work!"

      Nice work. I'm sure Christians won't be offended by the more "subtle" new logo followed by the words, "Power to serve".

      At a time when Linux is crushing FreeBSD in terms of technical advancements per release, FreeBSD chooses voluntarily to adopt a logo that will continue to offend a substantial portion of a major world religion.

      I'm not saying Christians are correct for allowing themselves to feel offended by the new logo (or even the old mascot), I'm just questioning the wisdom of FreeBSD choosing to ignore the practical implications of choosing such a logo over all others at a time when FreeBSD's technical advantages have largely disappeared or is declining rapidly.

      Any Christian that is offended by the FreeBSD logo probably doesn't even know how to use computers. I myself am somewhat of a Christian and I know a few of the fundamentalist types.... the whole literal Bible thing. They don't seem to mind the logo because they are in touch with the real world. The type of Christian that is offended by the FreeBSD logo is generally going to be the backwoods inbred type. There are exceptions, of course, but the majority of Christians don't give a damn.

      I couldn't agree more! You have no idea how relieved I am at this; so many FOSS project members just don't seem to realise that when it comes to (even semi-) mainstream adoption, aesthetics do matter! It's great to see a project with such a broad outlook.

      Actually it looks more like the sort of logo you'd find on an IM or P2P app (they all seem to be using that style of logo). It just looks amateurish.

      On the flip side, the old logo (though fun) was terribly amateurish, and impeded taking the OS seriously. Then again, Linux was taken seriously in spite of the goofy penguin.

      It reminds me of the Firefox logo. Anyone? Not on the surface, but the use of lines and swoops definitely conjures the same overall shape to mind.

      I think you are way to high strung, you seem to think anything relaxed and non-pretentious looks amateurish. Remember, most of the open source movement is built on code written by people in their spare time, just for fun.

      Actually, beastie is still the mascot, and this new thing is the logo.
      From the competition home page:

      Beastie will continue to represent the FreeBSD Project as our mascot. We won't kill Beastie. The closest logo-like thing that we have now is shown below, and we are looking for other options to be used like there. The new logo design may or may not include Beastie, or even a stylized representation. Again, Beastie is still alive!

      I'd have to agree with you. It resembles images you find on a host of geeks' personal sites. The type of images that came from humble beginnings and had a myriad of generic GIMP/PhotoShop filters and effects to compensate for lack of originality or "catchiness."

      Not trying to be a party pooper, just my impression.

      Actually, it looks very slick and professionally designed. A geek in their bedroom with a ray-tracing package and a copy of GIMP could have produced something similar that would nevertheless have lacked the important 'professional' touch.

      Perhaps what you were thinking was that it doesn't project *quite* the right image for FreeBSD?

      To me, it's really bit too polished (a la IM/P2P app logo), and lacking a defined personality. It definitely looks better against a white background (more Apple-ish than ray-tracy in that context) though.

      Then again, Linux was taken seriously in spite of the goofy penguin.

      In spite of the fact that the canonical image of Tux is a professional-looking *picture*, it comes across as incredibly amateurish when used as a logo. Personally, I can't stand the damn thing; perhaps it reminds me of Orville the Duck, though.

      Best open-source artwork by far are the Firefox and Thunderbird logos. Beautifully designed pieces that are neither overly glossy nor bland.

    It's kind of ugly at first, but not as bad the more I look at it. I think its the font used that bothers me, not so much the graphic. The red background also seems like a little bit too much.

      I kind-of like the new logo, but I thought the point was to get rid of the demonic look. What has short horns and is red? Sure, I know what the old logo looks like, but I wonder what the uninitiated will think this is? You know people try to identify shapes.

      Also moronic is taking at face value an unattributed "news story" and an anecdote laced with outrageous stereotyping. The James Dobson comes without a by-line, and doesn't name the show where he was interviewed on Fox. Linda's foray into Texas redneckery is long on reflexive bigotry and intolerance, but seems to miss that the stereotypical Texan is also instinctively polite towards womenfolk. Not only would they not mention her shirt, they'd hold the door open for her and ask about her family.

      And here I always thought Slashdotters prided themselves on their "skepticism". I guess skepticism takes a back-seat when you get a juicy opportunity to wave your prejudices about.

Then they'll get back in their truck and finish re-telling (for the 3rd time) that "nigger joke" that was so funny. How completely fucked up that is completely escapes them much of the time.

        It's hard to figure out. Thankfully they're getting fewer and further between everyday.

      I'm from Texas (very far from Texas now, with no intentions of ever returning). I told my computer-phobic Texan ex-boyfriend the t-shirt story thinking he'd find it amusing; not only did he not see any humor, he thought the rednecks were right, and also agreed with them that no sports team would ever have a demon logo (not being much of a sports fan, I couldn't rebut him immediately).

      (this was at least 11 years ago, it being that long since he became "ex", and this is one of the reasons why)

      I don't agree with thinking FreeBSD becoming a bigger joke because I think it's very good, but I do have to agree with the feel of the logo. It's a bit too much like something for a gaming console, or some sophisticated toy. It lacks that touch of authority, the feeling of late night logging into work and do some command line maintenance. Or maybe I'm already getting too old, being over 30 and all. :-P

      As noted already, it is within the now popular "shiny orb" category. For the best example, see Mac OSX (or anything else Apple creates). Mac OSX is already a "strong, capable *nix" that uses "shiny orb"-y designs. FreeBSD definitely has the power to be one, too!

      I'm very interested to see the others. Even though I'm not sure yet how I feel about that logo itself, I'm really impressed by the completeness of Anton's work.

      The font is awesome, IMHO, and I'd just love to have that "handbook" sit on my shelf (even though I don't run FreeBSD, for obvious reasons - it can't even stand a slash-beating! *ducks*)

      It's really good to see Open Source projects take branding seriously, and even better that they are able to acquire the talent of such great graphics artists! I hope for Anton that this results in a nice amount of 'paid for work'.

    Personally I hate "shaded" or three-dimensional logos. They quickly become tiresome. This logo will look cheap and dated 5 years from now, I guarantee it. I would prefer a more "timeless" logo, closer to monochromatic, two-dimensional. Something that could be sketched with a pen, yet be completely unique and recognizable.

    I feel this logo has the most meaning only to those familiar with the previous logo (the beastie). A random person on the street (or in the boardroom) will not have a clue. And that's not good. For instance, why is the "horned ball" turned slightly? Just to show off perspective? To emulate the perspective of the previous logo? Why not just show the logo head-on, with symmetrical horns? Look at the black and white version. It looks like a drawing from a geometry textbook. A logo should be as minimal and simple as the font used to write the letters next to it.

    I do like the font though. If the word FreeBSD were larger, and the logo smaller, I think it would look better, at least at the example I'm looking at.

    Oh well. Anything is better than than the beastie from a corporate point of view, although this new one is utterly plastic and lifeless.

      You mean you want logos like this?

      Personally, I like the 3-dimensional shiny brushed metal icons. Computer graphics have an easy time drawing these types of images; they are very simple as far as their composition and they scale easily (they are actually simple 2-D images). Computer images have an easy time doing shiny, artificial-looking objects -- you'll notice this if you watch any CG attempts at natural images, such as Toy Story or Final Fantasy. I say forget trying to emulate other mediums on the computer. See how far you can go using something native to the computer.

      Oh please, you may not like it, but hideous is an overstatement. I personally like simple 2D "vector" logos too, and this one lends itself just fine to that. The winner image shows all sorts of different variations, including a very plain contour version, with no fancy shading. The "3D" version is supposed to be a centerpiece on a box set (as shown in the winner image too), or a booth logo. That's why it is so heavy in sheen and bright colours; yet even there most of the details remain very subtle.

      This is another thing that Apple made popular in the past few years when they changed their logo from the flat rainbow apple to the glossy colored apple.

      But you'll notice that even they have stopped using their 3d glossy logo in most places, and pretty much use just a flat solid color apple now (which BTW, is what they used to tell their dealers and partners to use).

      So, if you are going to copy a trend, try to do it before the guy who started it moves on.

      I disagree. It will look "cheap and dated" one year from now. The font, too. Designer should have either found a font with a stronger baseline, or manually adapted Energist (or whatever the font is) to convey some strength.

      Logos should work 2D and in black and white first, and "full-color with gradients" third-to-last. Right before "flaming" and "spinning". To me, the logo is a little wonky. And yes, that's a technical term.

      That being said, it works better than what they had, and the collateral pieces are nice and professional. I look forward to the future development of the brand.

      Your problem is that you didn't take a look at its permutations. I think that is what makes this logo so cool! The author took into consideration the many ways a logo can be displayed - on t-shirts, boxes, CD, etc.; in different colors (see postcard in the above link), representing different topics (see the secure logo), and so on.

      In other words, what makes this logo great is its adaptability - it remains easily recognizable while suitable for a range of products (be it advocacy products like tshirts or postcards, or books and CDs). Oh yes, and don't confuse this logo with beastie btw - beastie remains the mascot of the FreeBSD project, while this is their new logo.

      As I first said when that logo came out a year or so back... it looked pretty bland and dated even then. Like something from the turn of the 80s/90s when the "lots of curved lines" look came in for corporate logos and so on (in the UK at least); or a logo for a bland political party. There's also something very subtley dated and dowdy about the typeface; something a mail-order company advertising in a middle-of-the-road newspaper during the late 1980s would have used.

      OTOH, I'm definitely being picky here.

      Lexus is finally starting to notice this, which is why those butt-ugly clear & chrome taillight lenses are mercifully beginning to go out of fashion. I always thought it odd that an upscale (although bland) brand like Lexus decided to blatantly embrace (and unfortunately popularize) a ricerocket/drifter trend like those hideous taillights. Nissan, though should at least get some points for trying to bring back sixties jet-pod taillights within the confines of the chromy taillight theme on the Altima.

      Oddly, the only phrase that can really describe such a design is "Cadillac-ugly", which is funny because they don't use that sort of taillight - that's quite possibly their only redeeming design feature these days.

      The NetBSD logo is among the best as open source logos go (MySQL and Sleepycat are probably the best, but they're real corporate efforts.) I'll agree that 3D shaded/gradient logos may well look very "turn of the century" in a few years (like much of the currently fashionable "urban/industrial" architecture with galvanized trim), but I think it's really to early to tell for certain.

      I think this new FreeBSD logo, while not to my own tastes, is very well-done, given the theme Gural chose to pursue. The custom FreeBSD font is very well-done and is an extra-nice touch, along with packaging designs, etc.

      If you stop and think about it, this is a hard logo to do well - they wanted to distance themselves from the old daemon in tennis shoes, but what else says Unix (or even BSD) without actually saying "Unix" (which you can't do for copyright reasons)? I think Gural has done a great job of echoing the daemon logo without being hidebound by realism. This is a nice logo, done fairly well. We'll see how it holds up...

      That has more to do with the photographer's lack of skill than Ceren's figure. The lens used was slightly wide-angle (probably a zoom, backed up to get her in head to foot while standing too close), the photo is taken at eye height by someone taller than Ceren (distorts perspective, making her head look bigger than it is), with direct, non-diffused on-camera flash (flatten features, but makes specular reflections exagerate her shape).

      The things to do for a shot like this are:
      • Stand further back & use a longer lens
      • Shoot from her waist level for a head to toe standing shot, or her chest level for a head to waist shot
      • Use an off-camera flash or flash bracket, with a diffuser (could be as simple as a bounce flash with a card to pick up catchlights in her eyes)

      The fact that the shadows around her legs make them (at a brief glance) look smaller, and hence her backside and hips proportionately fatter doesn't help either.

      Whole thing reminds me of a photograph of a girl taken at a trade show; she was being totally ripped to shreds here, but anyone with the remotest shred of photographic knowledge could see that there were several problems with the way the photograph was set up (most notably harsh overhead lighting; never does anyone's face much good).

      This is the same reason I don't use a webcam. *Everybody* looks bad on a webcam; bad focus... but mainly bad lighting and the exaggerated perspective caused by sitting close to a wide angle lens. ******* awful.... :(

    There is a difference between a mascot and a logo.

    Think about McDonalds. Their logo is a giant 'M'. Their mascot is a scary kiddy-fiddling clown thing. The giant 'M' has changed over time, but Ronald McDonald is still the same freakish evil clown.

    The Daemon mascot is going nowhere.

      My favorite example is Java's mascot, Duke. The Java cup has changed once or twice, but Duke stays.
      On the other hand, FreeBSD's new logo looks more like a mascot than a logo to me...
      It also looks like Beastie's head without a face.
      IMHO only the b&w versions of the logo should remain.

      FreeBSD didn't really have a logo per se, and that was sortof the problem. Sometimes they'd put up a picture of Beastie, sometimes they'd just use the slogan (I can't wait for the new slogan contest), and sometimes they'd just put the word "FreeBSD" as a letterhead.

      Mascots and logos aren't interchangeable, and it wasn't good to use them interchangeably. The theory is that it's bad juju to put up a picture (one which pisses off the fundies, though I'm inclined to think that's a good thing), and that it's instead better to be represented by a tennis ball with giant nipples.

      That said, I was one of this logo's biggest supporters from the start of the contest, and I was on the initial logo review team. I think that FreeBSD doesn't *need* a logo, but that this one fits the Project pretty well. 'Cause all FreeBSD developers have giant nipples.

    To me it looks like a Chaos Toy that you'd kick around on the floor with the horns causing it to caroom off in unexpected directions.

    What it does not do for me is make me think of BSD Lnix when I see it.

      Assuming you weren't saying that FreeBSD (or any other BSD for that matter) is another Linux distro, the reason it doesn't make you think of FreeBSD would be because the logo is new. A logo is about building brand recognition. It's early. Come back in a year, and see if you can make the same statement then.

      They must've been running FreeBSD 5. Then again, I've had some bad experiences with FreeBSD 4 with large loads of users. I rebuilt from the ground up a system to try and work with the users with minimal load, and at this point a lot of performance gains seem to be overkill to your typical webmaster, but after having the fun of thousands of users on a single FreeBSD 4 server, I can safely say that it was quite good with performance.

    That's when the system experiences a (new, unexpected) page fault in the kernel while handling a page fault for user space.

    The icon isn't too bad. As a graphic I find it effective and unique. He thought out the icon variations very nicely too- They all seem to work. But the typography is terrible, IMO. Out of the thousands of classic and trusted typefaces, he selected one that is absolutely void of any life or substance. Off the top of my head, Trade Gothic, Futura Condensed and even Univers would all work in it's place. Even still, the letter spacing and such is terrible- Not a good typographic choice.

    That being said- just because it appears one could create this "in 3 minutes" doesn't mean it isn't good. Some of the best ideas can come very quickly, some not so much- and it's been my experience that with today's tools, execution has the potential to occur quickly as well. A logo (and art in general) is not about the amount of time you spend on it- It's about effectiveness of your solution.

    It's a noble effort.

    i seem to recall that there was a butt load of submissions. i think from a branding point of view, the winning submission is appropriate: it allows for various merchandise items to be branded consistently, including logotype and color variations. all in all i think freebsd will get alot of mileage out of the winning submission. that being said, it would be cool to see the other submissions, even if for nothing else for curiosity's sake. come on, let's see the losers!

      Here's mine. Only shortly after submitting it did I realise that I had, inadvertently, chosen the almost-exact same colour scheme as the new(ish) NetBSD logo :P

      I'm not bitter, or anything ;) I actually quite like the winning entry; although I do agree that the 3D shininess is already somewhat the flavour of last month... We shall see.

    I'm not sure which porn sites you surf with IE, but the Windows boxes at my house stay up for months at a time, and they don't go down because of software failure. My computers shut down more often because of power failure than software failure, which is another issue entirely. New Microsoft software is not THAT bad that it can only run for days, 'at best'. It is actually very reliable if the computer is administered in a sane way, which, oddly enough, all of mine are. I use them for different tasks, heavy loads, multiple users, and neither the OS nor apps crash on me. I usually am not using any MS apps, other than the OS though.

    Basically, if you can manage to get Linux or Solaris running for years at a time, but you can't manage to get Windows to run for more than a few days or BSD to run for more than a few weeks, you probably are in need of a very large shoehorn to assist in the removal of your head from your ass. Good luck with that.

    I think everyone realises that the BSD daemon is a little too much. After all, there's too many things you can do with the word daemon, for example add suffixes such as ic and ise and you are going to alienate even more people (or should I say perspective buyers). Maybe this logo is an ingenious, though a bit late, attempt to move away from the daemon to say... pokemon ball as someone suggested earlier... First, remove the body, then removes the horns and you got yourself a ball. And with a simple ball you can go pretty much anywhere you like...

I'll have to wait and see if that's the case for myself - it doesn't do much for me just yet - too "shiny orb"-ish for me. Regardless, I'm not giving up my Beastie Tshirts.       Oh yeah, absolutely. I knew there was a point I'd forgotten to include in my earlier post... in a few years time, people will be able to point to this logo and guess it was created circa 2003-2006 ("Apple knock-off").

      It'll be as recognisable and dated as (say) 1980s graphic design was by the late 1990s ("Dynamic handwriting? Check. Pastel colours? Check. Triangle resting on some semi-randomly scattered speckles in the background? Check. Parallel lines in there? Check.")

    Before everyone with mod points decides to mark this "Troll," I used to digitize logos for an embroidery company back East for close to five years. The shaded version is impossible and the monochromatic/hi-contrast versions are unbelievably dull.

    Logo design is an unpleasant process for everyone concerned, where technology takes a backseat to compromise between several factors:

    - an original concept immediately recognizable at a hundred paces
    - a design which uses colors but is recognizable as line art
    - not easily convertible to genitalia by graffiti artists
    - hopefully evoking something about the nature of the client/product (that IBM logo in the corner that Paul Rand designed evokes greenbar printouts or CRT pixels).

    The computer industry is one of the worst at figuring these concepts out. Random objects (an apple? a penguin? WTF?), a nonsensical literalism of a GUI metaphor (candy-colored glass windowpanes?), or some kind of Nike-ism (the Atari fuji) are the rules rather than the exceptions (IBM, NeXT, Commodore). Then again, the quality of a logo obviously doesn't ensure success.

    I admire their artist - Ty Semanka? - who could also do nice Hawaii shirts, thus expressing the same relaxed art that was so nice about the old McKusick daemon renderings (a lot of little guys with fork running around light balls, symbolizing processes) or the friendly Hosokawa daemon in sneakers.
    This is so corporate apple style without heart and artificial coolness. :-(

    Linux is just as stable as BSD. Netcraft simply can't reliably track linux because of technical reasons regarding implementation. From the FAQ:

    Why do you not report uptimes for Linux 2.6 or Linux alpha/ia64 ?

    The Linux kernel switched to a higher internal timer rate at kernel version 2.5.26. Linux 2.4 used a rate of 100Hz. Linux 2.6 uses a timer at 1000Hz. (An explanation of the HZ setting in Linux.)

    The above applies to Linux on 32-bit Intel-compatible systems (which is the most common case). Linux on other platforms uses different timer rates: the Alpha and Intel ia-64 ports already used 1000Hz, while the ports for sparc, m68k and other less common processors continue to use 100Hz.

    The Linux TCP code only uses the low 32 bits of the timer. Due to the faster rate of the timer, the value wraps around every 49.7 days (whereas it used to wrap after 497 days). Because there are large numbers of Linux systems which have a higher uptime than this, it is no longer possible to report accurate uptimes for these systems.

    yeah, that's what i'm talking about! elsewhere in this thread, orrin bloquy mentions some of the downsides of logo design, and i totally agree. a lot of what logo design requires is thought on how it will be reproduced in different media(print/web/silkscreen/embroidery/etc), and while i originally stated that the winning logo was appropriate(with various iterations for multi-purposes), after seeing references to game daemons. i think i'm gonna retract my original comment and make a general request that the other submissions be show, and that some community input be considered in a re-vote on the logo design!

      Close to my feelings on it.

      When I first scanned it this morning I reacted positively, appealling to the eye. But now after really going over it and looking at it closely, I find it lacks any meaning. It's trendy, practically homogenous with other new logos we see popping up as icons on desktops. It's slick, and possibly symbolically it appears to be hollow.

      Thankfully Kirk's Beastie will still be around.

I personally watched them try to *trip* people passing by to make them fall down the stairs. I said something to them & asked them where they were from (Houston).     It's cool, but the styling is unoriginal (even microsoft do the "apple aqua" look now, of glass balls and table top reflections.) The layouts on the CDs and other materials are also familiar with the same way apple lay out their CDs. It's typical flattery-culture to take someone elses concept/styling and alter it for their own use.

    Does anyone have a photo-list of the other top entries?

    Good overall design (looks best in black/white IMHO), but get rid of the horns. They're just not cool and although the logo is less 'playful' than the previous logo it still looks unprofessional to me.

    I never saw the Freebies admit that the problem was at all to do with religion. There was a need for a better logo that they could be identified with in business; the Beastie remains the mascot but is copyrighted to a particular artist whose kindness they have been glad to receive. Thus a new logo was needed.

    I have read part of comments. Some peaple silently likes new logo, some loudly cries that it is bad. Anyway, i like my work, and think that I'll continue working with new logo.     In about another 5 months or so. We may not be dead, but we act like it. I mean, c'mon, you have all summer to work up the new web site and yet the new site doesn't know anything ab out the new logo? How about putting a generic "new-logo" image sprinkled all over? Then bam, copy the new logo image over the old, and there you are, instant update.

    I go for OpenBSD myself, where your software works, is secure, and if you want to get yelled at, you just have to ask a stupid question on misc@.

    As a Christian and personally, I and everyone I know would seriously laugh at anyone who took Chuck as an anti-Christian or anti-religious image. I like Chuck, he's not going anywhere. Finally, I like the new logo. Way to go!

    OOPS, did I say it out loud? Been using FreeBSD for ages and have been a big fan of it. I find the 3d shading of the new logo very troubling to the eyes. Hope whats inside 6.0 is better than the logo.
