FreeBSD Logo Contest Winner Announced
Saint Aardvark writes "Earlier this year, the FreeBSD people announced a competition to design a new logo. Welp, the winner has been announced, and you can check out the new logo. Congratulations to Anton K. Gural on the spiffy work!"

It's kind of ugly at first, but not as bad the more I look at it. I think its the font used that bothers me, not so much the graphic. The red background also seems like a little bit too much.

I am amazed. It manages to look similar to the old one (horns) for someone who knows, yet if you don't know it does not suggest anything demonlike. Which is precisely what they wanted, I guess.

This has been discussed many times: beastie will remain as the mascotte, but not as the logo.

Personally I hate "shaded" or three-dimensional logos. They quickly become tiresome. This logo will look cheap and dated 5 years from now, I guarantee it. I would prefer a more "timeless" logo, closer to monochromatic, two-dimensional. Something that could be sketched with a pen, yet be completely unique and recognizable.
I feel this logo has the most meaning only to those familiar with the previous logo (the beastie). A random person on the street (or in the boardroom) will not have a clue. And that's not good. For instance, why is the "horned ball" turned slightly? Just to show off perspective? To emulate the perspective of the previous logo? Why not just show the logo head-on, with symmetrical horns? Look at the black and white version. It looks like a drawing from a geometry textbook. A logo should be as minimal and simple as the font used to write the letters next to it.
I do like the font though. If the word FreeBSD were larger, and the logo smaller, I think it would look better, at least at the example I'm looking at.
Oh well. Anything is better than than the beastie from a corporate point of view, although this new one is utterly plastic and lifeless.

The icon isn't too bad. As a graphic I find it effective and unique. He thought out the icon variations very nicely too- They all seem to work. But the typography is terrible, IMO. Out of the thousands of classic and trusted typefaces, he selected one that is absolutely void of any life or substance. Off the top of my head, Trade Gothic, Futura Condensed and even Univers would all work in it's place. Even still, the letter spacing and such is terrible- Not a good typographic choice.
That being said- just because it appears one could create this "in 3 minutes" doesn't mean it isn't good. Some of the best ideas can come very quickly, some not so much- and it's been my experience that with today's tools, execution has the potential to occur quickly as well. A logo (and art in general) is not about the amount of time you spend on it- It's about effectiveness of your solution.
It's a noble effort.
i seem to recall that there was a butt load of submissions. i think from a branding point of view, the winning submission is appropriate: it allows for various merchandise items to be branded consistently, including logotype and color variations. all in all i think freebsd will get alot of mileage out of the winning submission. that being said, it would be cool to see the other submissions, even if for nothing else for curiosity's sake. come on, let's see the losers!

I'm not sure which porn sites you surf with IE, but the Windows boxes at my house stay up for months at a time, and they don't go down because of software failure. My computers shut down more often because of power failure than software failure, which is another issue entirely. New Microsoft software is not THAT bad that it can only run for days, 'at best'. It is actually very reliable if the computer is administered in a sane way, which, oddly enough, all of mine are. I use them for different tasks, heavy loads, multiple users, and neither the OS nor apps crash on me. I usually am not using any MS apps, other than the OS though.
Basically, if you can manage to get Linux or Solaris running for years at a time, but you can't manage to get Windows to run for more than a few days or BSD to run for more than a few weeks, you probably are in need of a very large shoehorn to assist in the removal of your head from your ass. Good luck with that.

Why do you not report uptimes for Linux 2.6 or Linux alpha/ia64 ?
The Linux kernel switched to a higher internal timer rate at kernel version 2.5.26. Linux 2.4 used a rate of 100Hz. Linux 2.6 uses a timer at 1000Hz. (An explanation of the HZ setting in Linux.)
The above applies to Linux on 32-bit Intel-compatible systems (which is the most common case). Linux on other platforms uses different timer rates: the Alpha and Intel ia-64 ports already used 1000Hz, while the ports for sparc, m68k and other less common processors continue to use 100Hz.
The Linux TCP code only uses the low 32 bits of the timer. Due to the faster rate of the timer, the value wraps around every 49.7 days (whereas it used to wrap after 497 days). Because there are large numbers of Linux systems which have a higher uptime than this, it is no longer possible to report accurate uptimes for these systems.

I think everyone realises that the BSD daemon is a little too much. After all, there's too many things you can do with the word daemon, for example add suffixes such as ic and ise and you are going to alienate even more people (or should I say perspective buyers). Maybe this logo is an ingenious, though a bit late, attempt to move away from the daemon to say... pokemon ball as someone suggested earlier... First, remove the body, then removes the horns and you got yourself a ball. And with a simple ball you can go pretty much anywhere you like...
No,it won't appeal to them all. It may grow on a good many of them though. I'll have to wait and see if that's the case for myself - it doesn't do much for me just yet - too "shiny orb"-ish for me. Regardless, I'm not giving up my Beastie Tshirts. Also, I'm still quite fond of many of the she Deamon designs that have come up over the years. And I'll bet a dollar Beastie is still quite visible 2 or more years down the road.
First thing I thought of was the killer sphere from PHANTASM. Picture a flying ball that embedds itself into your forehead, drills a hole, then extracts all cranial fluids...powered by FreeBSD(TM)!
Quote: http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/accuracy.html
Additionally HP-UX, Linux, NetApp NetCache, Solaris and recent releases of FreeBSD cycle back to zero after 497 days, exactly as if the machine had been rebooted at that precise point. Thus it is not possible to see a HP-UX, Linux or Solaris system with an uptime measurement above 497 days.

The quirks of it- the tilt of perspective, the look, the coloration, will all draw corporate pointy-heads -back- to the Beastie context of the mascot, and thus will nullify any "distancing from the demonic implication" that the new logo was supposed to accomplish to start with.

Before everyone with mod points decides to mark this "Troll," I used to digitize logos for an embroidery company back East for close to five years. The shaded version is impossible and the monochromatic/hi-contrast versions are unbelievably dull.
Logo design is an unpleasant process for everyone concerned, where technology takes a backseat to compromise between several factors:
- an original concept immediately recognizable at a hundred paces
- a design which uses colors but is recognizable as line art
- not easily convertible to genitalia by graffiti artists
- hopefully evoking something about the nature of the client/product (that IBM logo in the corner that Paul Rand designed evokes greenbar printouts or CRT pixels).
The computer industry is one of the worst at figuring these concepts out. Random objects (an apple? a penguin? WTF?), a nonsensical literalism of a GUI metaphor (candy-colored glass windowpanes?), or some kind of Nike-ism (the Atari fuji) are the rules rather than the exceptions (IBM, NeXT, Commodore). Then again, the quality of a logo obviously doesn't ensure success.

That logo is a reason to defect to OpenBSD. :-(
I admire their artist - Ty Semanka? - who could also do nice Hawaii shirts, thus expressing the same relaxed art that was so nice about the old McKusick daemon renderings (a lot of little guys with fork running around light balls, symbolizing processes) or the friendly Hosokawa daemon in sneakers.
This is so corporate apple style without heart and artificial coolness.

Linux is just as stable as BSD. Netcraft simply can't reliably track linux because of technical reasons regarding implementation. From the FAQ:

yeah, that's what i'm talking about! elsewhere in this thread, orrin bloquy mentions some of the downsides of logo design, and i totally agree. a lot of what logo design requires is thought on how it will be reproduced in different media(print/web/silkscreen/embroidery/etc), and while i originally stated that the winning logo was appropriate(with various iterations for multi-purposes), after seeing references to game daemons. i think i'm gonna retract my original comment and make a general request that the other submissions be show, and that some community input be considered in a re-vote on the logo design!

If they're offended by some cartoon daemon as a mascot for an OS then they can happily stay away. I'd prefer they not meddle with anything else.
I am sickened by the amount of foothold this has gotten in the U.S. since oh, 2000 or so.
do() || do_not();
So how is the leech treatment going? Ill humors out of your system yet?
Too busy staying alive... ~ R.A.
It looks like a WWII underwater mine with some of the pokey things missing.
I really like it. Modern, but with strong links to the Beastie of old. To paraphase Robbie Coltrane "Its like triple expansion steam engines: an idea so simple you are convinced that given enough paper and a desert island, you'd come up with it yourself... of course you never would".
Scared of flying, pointy things snce 1979!
Contest win you!
That's a silly logo.
How ya like dat?
*sigh*
smash
I run: Windows, OS X, Linux, FreeBSD. Just because you have a hammer, doesn't mean everything is a nail.
Its too 'cute' to stand the test of time, like the good old AT&T deathstar will, for example.
Its also rather abstract. If you dont know about the daemon, you wont have any clue what the hell it is.. " a ball with horns ".
Logos should be a direct statement, and easy to figure out as its part of the 'marketing'. You dont want to make your potential customers have to work to figure it out.
---- Booth was a patriot ----
Did someone cut the legs off a Cuz dog toy? Well I guess the good news is if Mozilla needs a new mascot we know where they can look.
It looks like less-detailed version of the OpenBSD blowfish! ;)
This looks like the tip of two dog penises in heat!!!!!!!
I didn't think that the hydrogen electron orbit looked like that.
Her face isn't all that pretty, her figure is simply OK and I've seen better hair on Kansas farm girls. There's two girls that work at the freakin' Microcenter that look better than her, and the Microcenter seems to make ugly a hiring criteria.
Is it just that she isn't one of the usual obese, dumpy, homely hangers-on at the weekend D&D session, like the blonde woman in the background of the photo?
...just to be fair. That said: 1) There were these two cowboys (hats & all) that were at the top of a stairwell in a nightclub in Colorado. I personally watched them try to *trip* people passing by to make them fall down the stairs. I said something to them & asked them where they were from (Houston). They just kept on trying to trip people, so I had them bounced. They threatened me, personally. Of course when I left, they were nowhere to be found. 2) I've driven through Texas and observed some VERY insane road rage. Was surprised one of the locals didn't shoot someone. Somehow, Texas both blows AND sucks at the same time...
Yeah, I am AngryMan and like the subject title says.. The logo SUCKS BALLS!
I just dont like it :S
RUPERT! I TOLD YOU TO WATCH THE BAGS! You were looking at the boys again, WEREN'T YOU.
It's a SPACE-HOPPER !

In case you didn't notice the font is the same font as the one used on axe body wash... if you look at the tshirt that's grey it looks just like the damn bottle of AXE. Dude ripped off the idea and the font.
Remove the final '/' of each one...
Maybe he was doing a slash-dot test ?

It's horrible. It looks like something Apple would come up with. I'll stick to the old logo, thanks, and delete or scratch out the new one wherever I have the ability to do so. It's a travesty!
You god damn nerd. Fuck!
You first recognize you had an image problem with christians. Then you decide you need a new logo. I personnaly applaud the move. Then you mess it up by choosing a red ball with horns.
Congrats for the extreme makeover.
And no I don't watch that much Pokemon.
I figured as much. It's Digimon that uses the "-mon" suffix on the names of varieties. In Pokémon, you might get names such as "Beastie" (the mascot of *BSD) or "Flameon" (like #136 Flareon).
Good job otherwise :)
It's fugly. Beastie was so good. Screw the people that scared off by a cute demon. We don't want them anyway.
I ate one of those the other day.

Does anyone have a photo-list of the other top entries?
Please, someone, please redesign that hideous GNU logo.
-- My Weblog.
Good overall design (looks best in black/white IMHO), but get rid of the horns. They're just not cool and although the logo is less 'playful' than the previous logo it still looks unprofessional to me.
Sample this!
I never saw the Freebies admit that the problem was at all to do with religion. There was a need for a better logo that they could be identified with in business; the Beastie remains the mascot but is copyrighted to a particular artist whose kindness they have been glad to receive. Thus a new logo was needed.
Not bad. But I think the logo is also a no-no in the US.
It would be dreadful if kids could see the first E penetrating the second.
w00t, I read a comment somewhere about the new FreeBSD logo looking like kirby(the nintendo blob thing which swallow air).
:D
You can all judge by this gif animation I made , I feel its a damn good match.
There's no face!! It's a faceless ball with horns!! No face = no character. This would never have come out of Japan. Where's the cute daemon face? Ah shit.
I have read part of comments. Some peaple silently likes new logo, some loudly cries that it is bad. Anyway, i like my work, and think that I'll continue working with new logo. If freebsd community decide on to change logo, it is their decision :)
New graphics based on logo is coming soon on www.freebsdlogo.org

In about another 5 months or so. We may not be dead, but we act like it. I mean, c'mon, you have all summer to work up the new web site and yet the new site doesn't know anything ab out the new logo? How about putting a generic "new-logo" image sprinkled all over? Then bam, copy the new logo image over the old, and there you are, instant update.
I go for OpenBSD myself, where your software works, is secure, and if you want to get yelled at, you just have to ask a stupid question on misc@.
Pauline Kael in The New Yorker http://www.newyorker.com/ quotes Greta Garbo at seeing "Beauty and the Beast" by Jean Cocteau.
She thought the unencumbered actor was a disappointment without all those details.
(Alas, only the Disney cartoon review (1991) is online)
Then it would resemble the Napster logo - sigh. Bring back the Beastie!
It must have been something you assimilated. . . .
As a Christian and personally, I and everyone I know would seriously laugh at anyone who took Chuck as an anti-Christian or anti-religious image. I like Chuck, he's not going anywhere. Finally, I like the new logo. Way to go!
I am Spartacus
OOPS, did I say it out loud? Been using FreeBSD for ages and have been a big fan of it. I find the 3d shading of the new logo very troubling to the eyes. Hope whats inside 6.0 is better than the logo.
