There is most like something besides software you can do to earn money if you start slow and do not try to over-extend.
I now program, cook, bake (and yes, those last two are different skills), play bagpipes and do/teach these from my house. I retrained and started really slow. Used my work/social networks to get low paying (sometimes free) jobs in the new skills until I had a couple of regular clients (it took a couple of years). In the meantime I kept programming for the man.
It is eight years later and now I take a contract or two that interests me, have a regular batch of students that pass through, and play at lots of weddings, funerals, graduations, etc. It is quite varied, I have lots of fun, and get paid quite well for what I like to do.
The point is, just do what you like while you are doing what you need to get by. If you work at it, you will get good enough to be paid for it. Until then, just do good work and do not live beyond your means.
Think about what you are spending your money on. You do not need $100/mo DSL if you get get by with $10/mo dial-up and occasional trips to the library or Kinkos. You do not need $500/mo co-located server if you can get by w/ $75/mo shared server space. You do not need ___ if you can get by w/ ___ . Just fill in the blanks and adjust your expectations and money requirements accordingly.
You can live in the US and quite well for $1000/mo if you change your expectations.
find your local (if you have one) school teacher supply store. They have all kinds of game tokens, dice, spinners & what-have-yous. A good paper store is handy for getting the game board backing.
I print the game boards on multiple sheets on a colour printer, glue them to the backing and then laminate them a the local copy station.
This works for simple board games for her grade 1-3 students. Should work fine for your prototyping stages. Custom plastic is going to cost you, though. You might want to look into paperboard cut outs if you want to make and distribute it yourself.
Very little experience necessary! You just need to be able to walk roughly in time with the music. Just google your way to a local contra or folk dance web-site, show up and dance (some folk dance groups have semi-formal class structure). Usually for less than $7 per night. People are waiting to dance with you! They are even willing, and in many cases eager, to teach you how! Want more challenge and better exercise? Try English or Scottish country dancing. Feeling like a God of Coordination? Try some Scandinavian or Balkan folk dancing. The closer you live the a decent sized metropolitan area, the more selection you have. You can dance in Berkeley, CA and Portland, OR every night of the week. Move to a different country? I have square and contra danced in Germany and Japan. You get exercise, you get to meet people. You are now a geek with a social life. (P.S.: I met my wife through folk dancing. YMMV.)
I would hate to have someone just sniff my password/key and start using my downloads. I will also require another payment method. PayPal has screwed me and my friends before and we will not use it again.
A couple of friends and I have dealt with this in a number of jobs. What we finally settled on is over estimating our project deadlines a little bit and using the extra time to improve quality. This method has worked well for us in both contract and full-time positions. Just my two cents.

AT&T wants to force businesses to charge internet
customers more money? I could call up the company
This would be the perfect reason to switch to DSL.
"Use Qwest DSL instead of AT&T @Home and you can
save 3% on every purchase over the internet!"
What a great ad campaign.
Just like getting a cash discount when filling
up at the petrol station.
For just $499, I will scan your car and fry all of the RFID tags for you.

Windux!
You are guilty and are not given a chance to prove yourself innocent or even attempt to defend yourself even if guilty.
Try Canada for your next technical career move if you do not want to spend time in prison.

Any one have plans for a portable bulk eraser that can be used to scramble the brains if the IC?
