To me, this sounds like a mass exodus, not a simple move to avoid some laws...
I hate to sound "me too", but if I had mod points, I'd give them all to this. This is just right on.
I'm not crazy about AOL being the potential buyer but I still have to agree, someone with the client base that AOL does, is a perfect way to get Linux out there.
I personally don't think it's terribly ugly, being basically upside-down is odd, though.
However, WHY OH WHY can't I get something like this for my SLOT PIII's? All this watercooling/fanless/whatever stuff, is for sockets. Can't SOMEONE make something for my slot CPU's?
Meanwhile, all your data is stored on a centeral server and backed up everytime you go online, so there's no need to sync your Pogo manually with your PC.
Wait. OK, so all my personal info is being synced with some company that has root access to that said info? Does anyone see a problem here?
What about the servers? Let's just say this device really takes off, what's gonna happen when the un-avoidable upgrade happens? What if the upgrade goes boom? Does that mean all my data is MIA? Is there ANY WAY I can sync my info with another PERSONAL computer?
To speak quike frankly, if this wasn't actually being sold, I'd call it Vapor-Ware(tm).
"It is critically important for the United States to adopt a national broadband policy that encourages investment in new broadband infrastructure, applications and services -- particularly new last mile broadband facilities," said Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corporation. "Regulatory policies should encourage all companies to deploy these expensive and risky facilities."
Unless I'm reading something wrong here, is this guy encourging companies to hurry up and try like crazy to go belly up?!? He says straigt out deploy these expensive and risky facilities. He SAYS they are risky AND expensive, but in the same breath thinks EVERY company should do it for the last mile connections.
(I honestly don't know if this has been posted yet, but...)
It seems maybe Adobe is just simply noticing things that are already out there. No piracy, just smart minds coupled with fast fingers. Adobe is trying to make a buck. Others do it because they need to (or just want to, whatever. Sortof the same thing IMHO).
I have a friend who has an older UNi-Mog. I gotta tell ya, that thing is damn fun to go for rides in. I haven't done any off roading with him, but my first ride in the thing was in a mild hurricane. That was weird...
In order to download, something must already be running on the machine.
Simple. Ever here of FTP installs? All the BE Govt has to do is pass out boot floppies with a "pre-configured" configuration. Put the floppy in the drive, turn on the box, and bingo. It fires up the hardware (which would be a no-brainer, since they know the hardware they're handing out), connect to a server somewhere and install the OS.
Actually, this is probably better now that I think about it. The Govt would have control over what is being installed (but still maybe put in a "would you like to install anything else?" prompt). That's not suggesting draconian rules, I mean that as *NOT* installing ssh servers, and web servers, and ftp servers, etc. Things like that. You just simply can't have a country that totally free for the r00ting.
P.S.
I understand this idea wouldn't be a very good one on a dial up connection, but the idea (I think) is still a valid one.
You said that he should just customize the environments that are available to his needs and (implicitly) stop complaining
I suppose it could've been read that I was impling that, but that's not the way I wanted to come off sounding (because I didn't even think that). I think my point still stands, though. If he doesn't like it, change it. We have the choice.
ACK!!'s feedback is actually important and valuable.
You're damn rite it is! I'm VERY glad to see opinions like that posted in a global place (and replies like ours). It shows a (sort of) unity. We all agree to disagree (so to speak). THAT'S why the Linux comunity exists and I'm am happy to be a (small) part of it.
they take someone else's preferences as an attack on their own. Really, why did you bother to post this? You think that the parent poster was calling for the annihilation of KDE/Gnome?
No, no, no. That's why I added the preface to it. I didn't want to sound like a troll.
No, all I was trying to point out is if ACK!! doesn't like KDE or Gnome, then the simple solution is to simply not use them. I was only trying to say that he can use whatever he wants to use. I use KDE because I like it. I, personally, don't like WindowMaker. Did I make any comments on that preference? Nope. Does that mean I will will be "calling for the annihilation of" WindowMaker? Nope.
THat's his choice. That's his like, not mine. I have no place to say something stupid like "KDE 0wn3z j00! us3 17!". It's only my personal opinion that KDE is better. He apperently doesn't think so. OK, whatever.
Really, why did you bother to post this?
Frankly, I could ask you the same question...
(I hate to sound like a troll here, because I don't mean to, but...)
I am getting tired of my Gnome and KDE. I am starting to long for the days when I used WindowMaker
So... simply don't use them. Remove the packages if you don't even what to support apps written for them. Install your prefered GUI/WindowManager and don't look back. Seriously. It's that easy. You don't need a "special" distro to do what you want. Just simply install / remove what you want / don't want.
The part I don't understand about this whole saga is why SuSE? It's not "their" application, it's just in their distribution. Hell, thechnically, they aren't even selling it (they can't because of the GPL). They are just putting it on a CD and in a box for us. What about RedHat or Mandrake? Are they goning to have to brave these same elements?
Now, I understand that RH and MDK are not German companies and would be out of Crayon's "jurisdiction". Sooooo... what then about KDE? Granted KDE isn't a real "company", nor all all the hackers that are apart of KDE residing in Germany, but KDE is indeed (losely) based in Germany. Are they going to have to change it's name AGAIN?
P.S.
Sorry for bad spelling, I haven't had coffee yet...:-\
Poll Results
On 21 December, ZDNet posted a story reporting the preliminary results of this poll, which showed a large majority of respondents who said they planned to deliver applications via Web services by the end of 2002 favoured Java for the job. At the time, Java outranked.Net by a factor of three in this poll. By early January, the position had reversed; the results are shown here. An investigation indicated that Microsoft employees used vote-rigging to distort the results. The full story can be found here.

While I'm not going to say you're wrong, you need to take into account that there are M$ spoofing Icon Themes out there that even DO put the IE Icon on your desktop.
For workstations people are mnore likely to use 2.4 kernels with patches.
Yes, people (read as: geeks) like us/.'ers will. Sure. I'm LITTERALY recompiling my kernel as I type this with the above mentioned patches. But that's not the issue. This is about the (L)users. People who don't or can't know this stuff. To say "people" (read as: general public) I think requires a bit of a disclaimer at the end (so to speak, I don't mean it litteraly). The public doesn't know or care about this stuff, they just want to have the stupid thing work when they press the power button. That's all they know or care to know about "computers".
This is stright from the front page of he web site:

I wonder if Mel Brooks have an arguement then.

Just a thought.
Unfortunatly (as of 2:00 pm EST), it's seemed that kernel.org has been dead most of the day.

I just don't undersatnd why people can't use better Gnutella clients. Same thing. No restrictions.
Call me stupid, if you wish, but I just don't get it.

Needless to say I've done a fair amount of looking into these things, and have found a few things out there that may be of intrest to someone who may want to know more about these things. Sweet machines, they are.
