so said the Buddha. So is the Planck constant really constant as well? Would it be reasonable to believe that its value actually varies at different time of the universe? Just shooting off my head.;-)
They are a health hazard....you end up buying a separate keyboard, a bigger mouse (you need a docking bay to use both) or get the company to subsidie for them. I am just waiting for someone to successfully sue the laptop makers or the companies they worked for, for forcing laptops on them. Lastly, not having a laptop is an excuse not to bring work home!
I hate to pour cold water but that's my observation. With hundreds of millions of IT professionals flooding the market from newly emerging economies like India, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philipines, South America and so on....I cannot help but see the competition faced by IT professionals getting more intense in the next 5 to 10 years.
Ok pessimism from a 9 year old IT professional aside, I believe areas such as security, gaming, content management, knowledge systems and ERP systems as well as embedded system development continue to be good areas to build one's career in. However, any of these areas will force a persion into a niche so there are risks. Some risks are, (A) the area of speciality becomes too popular and competition becomes too intense (Java/J2EE?), (B) the area of speciality becomes unpopular and declines (COBOL?), (C) you may not be given the opportunity in these areas. Regardless, the pressure from wage squeeze will be ever present as companies continue to focus on cost over quality.
I believe the competition in the above areas have a manageable level of competition (anyone is potentially a Java expert nowadays), still offers good money (for a given amount of effort) in your IT career. If instead your priority is geographical mobility, I would think avoiding management roles would be good especially if you intend to work overseas. If you want job security, I personally feel that it is wiser to avoid middle IT management roles as well as to lower your pay expectations.
Whatever your decision pal, all the best! I believe we should continue to build up lots of good karma in any situations and the old lady (meaning karma) will take care of the rest.;-)
...you have two options. One way is to ask the mountain to move. The other option is to go around it. What I constantly admire about achievers is that they are smart enough not to bash their heads against immovable objects or deadends but to explore and pursue doggedly, opportunities that allow them to display their strengths. If there is a glass ceiling above you and it is not breakable or movable, then you MOVE or be broken.
We should not make the mistake of looking back from our death beds and realizing that we have wasted so much time cursing every injustice, unfairness and discrimination that came our way. Finally, regretting that we should have instead focused those time on other opportunities, hobbies, families, friends, etc. Well, we still might not achieve anything great in the end......but at least we didn't carry the burden of negativity with us for 60, 70 or 80 years of our life till our last breath. I believe strongly that not having to go through life with any negativity is in itself a wonderful and rare achievement. Unfortunately, this achievement is not news-worthy and most of us are just not interested in it;P
I think we have been making a wrong assumption here all this time. Who said evoluntionary intelligence has anything to do with performing well in IQ tests? Maybe Mother Nature or God just don't like highly cerebral humans. Why?
Firstly, just as they are capable of great benefits to society, they are also capable of great harm, like intelligent criminals? Secondly, smart people can vastly impact the eco-system and not always for the best, how about short-sighted scientists? Lastly, maybe folks with lower IQ can relate better to others, empathize with the masses....becoz they in the majority! So they are easier to get along....same frequency perhaps.
So the next time, someone praised you for being intelligent and well-off....just bear these in mind.....seriously, it may not be a good thing in my not-so-honorable opinion;P
My housemate's flower horn fish started behaving strangely since yesterday. Horn fish by nature is very aggressive. That fish would stalk me whenever I go near the tank but it had been hiding in one corner eversince. Could this be a sign of another potential quake?
Anyone here finding their house pets behaving similarly weird?
something which perhaps the US courts should do more often?
Watching from the sidelines, I'm sometimes disappointed at the trial by media and sensationalist reporting going on in the US. But then I'm not an American so maybe I'm out of touch.
Ok, so the English Queen is giving an honorary title to the man most disliked by Linux fanatics and for that she is said to be giving out titles like candies. Grow up!
I may not like the way Microsoft does think (somewhat arrogant) but give credit where it's due. Mr Gates' contributions in my mind are as follows:
1) Making IT not just for the geeks and the super rich but making it affordable for hundreds of millions of IT illiterates to learn how to use a PC. (I agree Macintosh and others were better but point 2 is the reason why MS succeeded).
2) Standardizing the way GUI applications work so that ordinary folks can get productivity out of them instead of endless tweaking and fumbling. (of course, sometimes it crashes and those @#$%^*!! words start flowing)
3) Bill is a philanthropist and a marvellous example compared to many other rich folks.
Let's be rationale, we may not like some aspects of a company or a person but don't throw out the good parts. That is character murder and a sign of immaturity on our part.
Hey, it's a waste of time if that's how you feel about your relationships with your loved ones. Goodness, I go out of my way several times to help my good friends to fix their PC problems. And I still don't mind doing it till this day.
Reasons? Because relationships matters to me. And I enjoy seeing the happy looks on their faces when things are solved. Of course, I'm only a geek not superman. There are times you have to know your limits and tell them to either buy some decent anti-virus software, stop installing crap without knowing what it'll do to their PCs and just exercise some plain common sense.
Lastly, our lives on earth are short. No matter how much $$ you work to get, it's not going to double/triple/x times your lifespan. But good karma follows you into your future lives.
It is revolutionary. Because now you cannot pinpoint an exact instant. And what's so significant about that? For one, it meant we had been so utterly clueless about what time is for so long. More importantly, our assumptions about time such as time warp, time measurements and so on.
BTW if you are still thinking about "very small closed sets around the approximate instant" then you will need to define where the enclosure starts and ends....but how can you when it's a continuity without intervals?
humans with superior autistic savant capabilities? Perhaps, she found that such individuals had personalities that are inherently unstable that creates bad survival probabilities for themselves and maybe those around them. Maybe our society has advanced to the level where we can artificially compensate for such geniuses' shortcomings or have we? What does it take to keep a genius happy, productive and non-destructive to society?
Give me a super crook and an idiotic one, i'll take the latter anytime.
I don't mostly practise what I am about to preach but during lectures...pay 100% ATTENTION!
It's tough, we tend to get distracted by many things, our thoughts, that cute girl sitting a few rows ahead and how to look cool, etc. But there are times when I do enter a state of flux and paid very close attention. Those are times when the mind was too busy following the lecture for me to take down notes. The only time I recall taking down notes during those times is when I absolutely don't comprehend the illustrations given by the lecturer and I didn't want to stop the whole class by interrupting. So I'll take down notes about the areas I don't understand and ask the lecturer later.
But all in all if you understand the points made you don't need to make any notes at all. It is automatically filed and stored somewhere in your mind. Hope this helps.
I know it may not be fair to demand the same quality from a open source application but at least let's acknowledge there are still plenty of rooms for improvements. For crying out loud, don't dig your heads into the ground each time someone complain about X11.....
nobody is irreplaceable. Yeah, things may get rough for a couple of months but eventually it'll settle down. Trust me, seen it happening many times.
Stupid for Linux supporters to condone this

type of behaviour. Linux supporters had been putting in so much effort over the years to gain mainstream acceptance. To portray ourselves as a bunch of fanatics who do not hesitate to annihilate any oppositions will only garner more resistance to the OSS movement.
GNOME which unfortunately had been known (correct me as this is what i have read and witness when the programs i tried to compile with different versions of glibc breaks) to yank the API rug from beneath application developers.
Compared to Sun, i always have the impression that HP is willing to work with Microsoft, IBM, Linux, Sun or anyone as long as the business gets done. Some may see this as not being principled while some may see this as being profit minded. Say what you want, but you have to admit they DO have a point there and HP is currently stronger in market fundamentals than its major competitors.
I must say X-windows performance sucks compared to MS Windows. I know what you pro X camp are going to say...that I'm naive, misled and even ignorant. But tell you a secret, us ignorant folks are growing every day.
The more Linux is being adopted, the more people like me are going to ask why X windows is slower than MS Windows. Each day, we grow by the thousands while you guys increase by a handful. Soon we will drown you out!
Do you see users who exercise self discipline and request for less features? No. Users always ask for more features than they remembered exist.
How many managers really tried hard to dissuade adding that nonsensical feature? Why should they? In the first place it would jeopardise their promotion and there'll be less chances to score points.
There are so many times in my job as a system analyst, i question the need for additional features or new applications. But it seems hardly anyone sit down nowadays to do a proper cost/benefit analysis. They just want to push more applications/features out faster and cheaper.
There in, i believe, lies the problem. With any technology, people eventually becomes greedy and tries to push it to the limit to satisfy every possible fancies that they have while ignoring its costs. As long as we keep misusing and abusing any technology, sooner or later, the law of diminishing return will set in. IT has its limits too.
I am from Singapore. Down here we employ our fair share of Indians and Chinese programmers in the company i'm currently in.
I disagree that,
Indians speak fluent English. You must be joking...every tried listening to the majority of them talk? The dictations,
pronunciations....same too for Chinese. Although i bet they'll improve with time.;-P
All Indians and Chinese are born programmers. Hee, hee...someone must be high or something.
Outsourcing results in lower costs, better codes and faster turnaround. Not if you ignore possible major re-work due
to miscommunication, poor workmanship and sheer lack of motivation on the other side.
I think having written the above...i agree there are very good Indian and Chinese professionals in the IT industry.
Unfortunately, i realise for all highly intelligent people, it's the lack of interest that really kills their talents.
And finding interesting things to do is a culture in America and perhaps, the reasons why it's so successful in breeding
so much entrepreuners. Something i bet the Indians, Chinese and any other country can take a leaf off.

I'll probably still be having a splitting headache over the fact that I "engineered" humans. Sigh....

a shit about the stuff that you are working on. Not so for IT, i'm afraid.
In this case, the reverse may be better.
there's no way IBM or Sun can hope to match the cost
advantage of Intel and corporate customers just are not
willing to continue investing huge budgets in legacy chips!
IBM and Sun should seriously consider porting
their AIX and Solaris to Itanium if they don't wish to
lost out in the long run.
I think a lot of Linux gurus/hackers just don't get it! We want INSTANT GRATIFICATION!!
Heck, we are all guilty of this crime so don't get almighty here. Apple managed to hit the
sweetspot with an OS that's both aesthetically beautiful and technically finesse, that's a FACT!
Quit whining and work on the aesthetic part of Linux.
