Wasnt there a Seaquest DSV show on thi, something like all interaction was through the net, giant robots figthing, and "adam" and "eve" of this world had never met ?
But on a serious note, it depends entirley on the persons dispositon. My predeseccor here at work wanted an office away from all, I have a beautiful executive office that wsa built for him at the REAR of our facility, people would see him when he came in went to lunch and left, all other interaction was via IM, mail, etc.
I am the oppisite, why bother to send a 20 minute typed email, when I can explain in in person in 2 minutes including fielding any unkown questions ?
I will call clients back 9 times out of 10 in response to their email, something Ive found , they like it BIG time, all clients that know me well call me direct, I am ALWAYS accesable.
In my case no it doesnt apply, it may perhaps be the oppisite, I GET more correspondence than previous I choose to respond in person, more communication=happier customers, and I get my raises an bonuses on schedule PLUS a loyal client following that even when times are tight will pay a premium for our services, we are much more expensive than our competiors, but our client base is growing, one main reason, we get refferals from clients that are pleased, they are pleased because there is always a liver cheerfull person on the onter end not a cold email.
In summary, I think it has entirley to do with your personality BEFORE the tech consumed your life, and EXACTLY how MUCH you ALLOW it to. My family is all geeks, on one side, it hasnt altered our personal or face to face communication in any sense, OTHER than it may have INCREASED the amount we communicate.

I had a cell phone in one hand and rang the bell with th other, he came to the door and I said, right now the Police number is on this phone, I am good friends with a detective there(true) now, you either pull the plug on your end or I press send and well see how long it takes for them to come and pull the plug permanetly, although I dont think you dad would be real happy, I thought this kid was going to wet his pants, Ive only seen somebody so scared a few times, he fell back over a chair in the foyer and took off ? I looked at my friend and it was all we could do to keep a srtaiht face.
He came back 20 seconds later and said its off, and the n stared to enquire about if I was going to tell his dad, I said no but Im sure the bill from your provider will, He was on a transfer pricing plan and this had been going on over 2 weeks while I was on vacation.
I have "Knoked on doors" twive one was a 2 hour drive but I had other business in that area , most certainly the most effective DOS stoppages Ive ever had.
Maybe we should form an allicance of Administrators geographically dispersed to start knocking on their doors, sort of an Administrators Militia , you knock on his in BFI and Ill knock for you when you need it. I know recently they changed their keyserver, did they change it back to allow for automomous operation again, compleyley decentalized , as it was in the begginign ?
Im betting dollars to dimes, they changed the keyserver info in some way or another to ELIMINATE being shut down as a whole networ, this is how it was originally supposed to work until clients other than their own started showing up on the network.
The linux version was a quick and dirty hack at best, Has anyone on the windows side been updated since running thier client last ???

We dont do commodity hosting, we only host existing clients, or clients we have done development for.
I am considering putting up another box, for people, a sort of develoment enviroment that we would maintain for these existing clients that want a sandbox aside from their production enviroment, I could possibly hast you there.
Bandwith is limited on that line, it is quite expensive in our area. 10 gigs a month transffer and 5 gigs HD space, on a 1.7 ghz box with 1 gig ram. You get one IP address, all yours:) , RH 7.2 all current with 2.4.17 (probably rmap-11c tool, ill see)For now this is a limit of the vserver utilities, Backups of your VM root are done from the Root, server that has NO net access. Hosting like this is as I said expensive, but our clients pay for my administration, 300 a month email me if interested.
Currently I speak 5 languages, 3 with no appreciable accent. Sometimes, on occasion my finger get lazy, it is not so much matter of perfect spelling as it is getting my point accross.
I know very well how to spell, that has no bearing, Slashdot is not that damm important in the whole scheme of life, it is as many things these days a simple distraction, and spelling here is not exactly my first priority .
Have made kernel patch and utilites to make this almost painless, as well as some precompiled kernels, (I would laways roll my own but..)

P.S. LOAD up on the ram , and make sure to use SCSI , Low ram and Ide will work but start to bog under load, remeber you have 10 different Linux installations trying to access the disk at once.....

I have been a RedHat user since 2.0, a Looonnnng time. I like it for a lot of reasons and can live with its problems compared to other distro's. Redhat has flourished where other early distros failed, Caldera, Yddsgrail, Slackware, there are still users for all (well maybe not Yd:) But redhat has done better than ALL linux distros when it comes to reckognition, they bought the right people up (Cygnus) and played with their $ right. They put out a quality product and I think have the best support of ANY of the early distros. They have been coppied more than any other , and downloaded than any other.
Look at what AOL did to netscape, no I could care less about mozilla, thats open sourcing was in the works PRIOR to the AOL acqusition,
AOL is in for the BUCK period , they care NOTHING of Open Source. This would spell complete disaster for RedHat in my opinon. AOL has dragged ass on Netscape because it didnt do what they thought it would for them INSTANTLY. RedHat would be no different.
Although it would be kinda neat to get a new distro in the mail every week.
Not to mention about 10,000,000 Linux CD sent out around the world, I can see it now, people are stupid enough to load AOL, Make it overwrite their windows install with a Linux Disrto:)

It has improved my performance through the VM and I would love to try the preemt patch but am concerned it shares mem sctions with the VM, Anyone runnign both rmap and this ?

Here it is plain and simple. THEFT of network resources, I wouldnt have stopped anything short of a public stoning on this. He had NO authority to do so, and was consuming resources that are limited and billed for. His motives were even iffy, was it to rake in the prize $$$ ? Was it to be helpfull to the project at the expense of the university ?
I am as much in managment as development or administration any more. I am and always will be a company man, that probably one of the reasons I still have a Job in the Dot_Bust world. I went there today for the first time looking for Rik van Riel I had some qustions about the rmap 11b patch and Guess what he was there and told me the 11c is coming today , REAL time info from people that really know their stuff.....
Kernel hacking can be fun if youre not in a rush IMHO, doing it against a dealine can be....uncomfortable to say the least.
Im assuming you know huw to extract the source tree and apply a patch , if not start there. Im also assuming you know C if you dont....what are you going to hack, or just patch and compile, Look through the tree for stuff you know, see how they do it , see if you think you can do better and try it, start small....... Me, ive never personally done anything that need make it into the tree on a permanent basis. but hey its been 8 years of all kinds of fun.....
One last point DO IT OFTEN !, Dont let yourself get rusty, Set a goal, a kernel hack a month, or at least a patch and compile a week if youre not cutting code....

This isnt somethign youre going to do on your desktop machine , its going to allow you to span resources, this is COMPLETLEY different from VMWare etc, for all the yahoos that are gonna say this has been around forveer.
After SEVERLY abusing our test server to hell an back starting 2-1 we are going to be offering hosting in this enviroment , we have clients that want their own playground but dont want the maintenece, some have semi-secure data theyre just no comfortable on a shared solution and cant quite justify a dedicated box, were already slated for 10 clients and with their current traffic and traffic times, they will all play very nicley on the same machine
P.S. LOAD up on the ram , and make sure to use SCSI , Low ram and Ide will work but start to bog under load, remeber you have 10 different Linux installations trying to access the disk at once.....

THINK of the systems, youve ALL seen networks that were so horribly configured as to allow bridge access to systems you should have NEVER been able to see, let alone due to their importance , never be on that network in the first place, but they are, and there is access at times.

I have been a RedHat user since 2.0, a Looonnnng time. I like it for a lot of reasons and can live with its problems compared to other distro's. Redhat has flourished where other early distros failed, Caldera, Yddsgrail, Slackware, there are still users for all (well maybe not Yd :) But redhat has done better than ALL linux distros when it comes to reckognition, they bought the right people up (Cygnus) and played with their $ right. They put out a quality product and I think have the best support of ANY of the early distros. They have been coppied more than any other , and downloaded than any other.

Look at what AOL did to netscape, no I could care less about mozilla, thats open sourcing was in the works PRIOR to the AOL acqusition,
AOL is in for the BUCK period , they care NOTHING of Open Source. This would spell complete disaster for RedHat in my opinon. AOL has dragged ass on Netscape because it didnt do what they thought it would for them INSTANTLY. RedHat would be no different.
Although it would be kinda neat to get a new distro in the mail every week.

RTCW is a ton of fun, I hadnt bought a game in over 10 years, Im not really the Gaming Type, BUT Me, and my two sons are Hooked on this, since we have Linux workstations at home, It RUNS FAR more stable on Linux than it does on My wifes W2k box, much nicer all the way around.

I am asking because I am running a Rik Riel rmap-11c patch against 2.4.18pre4 and would love to try it (Rik's new VM IS SOOOOO Much sweeter than the old, I was swapping after 10 minutes with 512 megs off a standart 2.4.17, I shouldnt have been) Now I dont swap at all yet, which I shouldnt be with as littlew load,
It has improved my performance through the VM and I would love to try the preemt patch but am concerned it shares mem sctions with the VM, Anyone runnign both rmap and this ?
I could always use more speed, It is a desktop only machine.
Here it is plain and simple. THEFT of network resources, I wouldnt have stopped anything short of a public stoning on this. He had NO authority to do so, and was consuming resources that are limited and billed for. His motives were even iffy, was it to rake in the prize $$$ ?
