You are correct, from the standpoint of financials you are somewhat correct.
What you do not realize is pharm. companies are not trying to find cures for hadly anthing, intentionally, other than to release long term treatments based on those findings. My uncle , whom I spent summers with from the time I was 7-17, was/is a major player in drug delivery systems, he holds over 200 patents. He INVENTED, and DEVELOPED the transdermal delivery system you see in "patches" while at Ciba Geigy, first known as transderm nitro, then the motion patch transderm scopolomine. Long and short he retired, that lasted all of about 5 minutes, before he was hired by a company out west , where he wintered in his retirment. He now does nothing but push drugs and systems through FDA approval, funny he wont take anything but asprin , he knows , and is partly responsible for pushing this crap through.
Pharm. companies would MUCH rather have a LONG term treatment regimin than a cure, they do actually specifically gear their programs to thoses ends. There are exceptions, but fewer and fewer. Cancer treatments have advance little in the last 20 years, the techiniques yes, the actual treatments no. There is as reason , chemo is EXPENSIVE, a drug company would much rather string you along 2 years even if you die in the end , than cure you with one fell swoop. More and more research monies are going into private efforts to goals on intentionally prolonging these ends.
My son also had cancer, neuroblastoma, I am aware all to closley with these problems.
I have a genetic blood disorder, it requires being bled monthly. The FDA last year APPROVED donor blood of my type for blood recipient use, it is not harmfull in the least and actually carries almost double the hemoglobin. NOW that said the Red Cross STILL requires, and has no intention of CHARGING for "theraputic" blood draws. Why , it is a profit center , lets see, 50k-100k people in the US with my problem currently seeking treatment. 1 x a month 12 month in a year 30 bucks a crack, thats 18 to 36 million a year. Now there is a wayy around it find a doctor that will lie and say you have surgery upcoming and need to self donate. This is dumb as hell and a pain.
What I see as the problem isnt a misdirection of resources to a rare disease. That I can understand and accept. THE PROBLEM IS GREED , AT THE COST OF THE QUALITY OF HUMAN LIVES FOR PROFIT. Intentionally witholding of research and findings that IS happening, because, there is more money in treatment. The pharm companies are PAYING LOBBYISTS to STOP certain genetic research, under many different arenas cloning, stem cell research etc. Many of these companies financials are open to an extent. Really funny thing is I almost , took a job at a company that they lobby through. That wasnt why I didnt take the job, funnily enough the GOP and MS actually use their services too to set up , wanna know what their business is......this is a doosey and legal too. They set up fake "grass-roots" lobbying efforts and PAY high buck lobbyists to work setting up unsuspecting citizens to become and Autonomous grass roots campaign, the "Leaders" of these campaigns are even unaware where the money came , and what the actual purpose of it is. (YOU WOULD BE FUCKING AMAZED at what they have pulled off)
Greed, Greed, Greed, capitalism has become synonymous with it , horsehit, greed stands on its own. Companies can make a profit and a nice one without greed, the problems have become companies wield more power in this country that individuals. and as such get away with shit , that if tried by any one single person, would be thrown in jail and wiped over the front page of the local rag so fast it would make your head spin.
Its about goddam time, My sone , who is now 5 had a liver transplant at 9 months old. He had a disease called billiary atresia. There is no singular known cause, and no treatment except liver transplant, which does resolve the problem, as it is confined to the liver.
We HAD a Living related donor TX for genetic matching reasons amongst others, my wife was actually genetically closer, so they whacked the left latteral lobe from her.
He has suffered NO rejection to date (98% of ALL liver TX have rejection to some degree in the first 14 days) he didnt even have that. NOW Liver rejection is much different from kidney or heart rejection, hyper-acute rejection (all of a sudden really bad) rarley happens then only early post TX. Livers can be in rejection for months and the patient not even know. Damage will be done if it isnt caught, but Liver regection is nearly ALWAYS controllable from and anti rejection standpoint.
NOW, wehn he was diagnosed I asked WHY in gods name wasnt there a cure, the answer very simple, from the then Head of UNOS (all organs are allocated from here) and the #2 ranked transplan surgeon in the world.....THERE IS NO MONEY IN IT FOR THE DRUG COMPAINES !, THE SAME WENT FOR ALTERNATIVE TX OPTIONS. This is horeshit.
The DRUGS to sustain liver TX arent cheap, kidneys and hearts are multitudes worse and the only ones worth a crap are pateneted. old crap like cyclosporin is fine if every 3 years you want to have your gums cut back (it makes em grow) and dont mind having ONE HUGE eyebrow(no shit) The pharm companies arent going to like this at all, I can see them lobbying hard against this forno other reason to save their profit centers.
Things happen , my sons chances and survival rate is exellent this far out from TX with no roblems (liver related) but if there is ever an injury he is much more succepible to liver necrosis, because he was given a liver half from a living person they could only take 1/2 the blood vessels, if he EVER has to be Re-TX I hope he could have his own genes in it and rejection would be a non issuse
I can say, I will never use passport I made that decision a long time ago. I dont trust MS with my information anymore than the next yahooo. I have had a hotmail account since the day after they started their service to the public, they have no personal information that is accurate, nor does yahoo, nor for that matter ebay. I started in 96 with ebay. I fortunatley have been on the web long enough to have avoided confirmations and the like. When any site I got to starts requiring passport services Im history.
Staying anonymous on the web is getting tougher but not impossible, confirmed . MS cannot ENSURE privacy with the passport system this has been proven, and as such it is vunerable to state regulation.
Since we all know the FBI and NSA can decrypt pretty much at will, and they all use Outlook to read our messages, perhaps this is the best way to secure it . Well just muck the header up, theyll be too busy trying to decrypt someting that isnt encrypted to figure it out .
I am of course being my usual smart ass self.
I think someone should be free to send whatever the hell they want HOWEVER they want to their colluges, a bunch of people griping this is bad, bad for linux, what does RMS say, WHO CARES !!!!
This, if it were acually serious, it isnt. WOULD be a matter between the sender and the recipient.
Youre not going to be in or do business long if noone with outlook can read your mail.
I have been toying with the idea of REAL fish in my computer , OR submersing my whloe computer in a fish tank and filling it with water (Well and old computer not my ceuurent beastie)
DeIonized water carries no current, SO throw it in a tank , fill, and evacuate (i have a nice vacume pump) to keep oxidation from ovvuring thus ioizing the water and zapping everything to hell.
I know its out there but damm I wanna try, I have also thought of a pseudo variant where I take some of the crystal clear shrink film we use here and "coating" the MB an chips, silicone around the edge to make it appear it is in the water (but actually dry).
NOW to the fish, Well Im assuming it will, with dissabation carry a temp of around 90-90 degrees, any suggestions on FISH ? Does all the em drive em batty ?
Any suggestions tips etc, I AM going to try this, how much of a success is another story, I am concerned about the first method leaching toxins into the water, If the fish live more than 3 days Ill be happy , I want to use this at a trade show, Or has it been done ?
Well I have developed on ITANIUM, (IA64) It leaves some to be desired, it is a first gen 64 for intel in the consumer market though. I ported BOCHS to the
Itanium, the result can be seen here This may sound loopy at firt but when you look at the backward IA32 incompatibilities, I need a way to test those from within the SAME enviromet.
The IA64 is a pretty lame first attempt from Intel, In my opion, I actually unlike others who will comment have direct experience, I should be getting access to a Hammer shortly, I have heard VERY good things, AMD's effort is much more likley to be a success for several reasons,
But the point I am trying to make is it looks like intel has really dragged its feet here, it cant decide if this is a market to be in or not, If AMD come through as I expect they will Intel will have a HELL of a time playing catchup.
AMD will play to a MUCH broader market than intel can envision, YES I WANT ONE ON MY DESKTOP, And Intel dosent see that market exists YET, then again Intel has never pushed bit copmputing capability, it has almost always lagged at LEAST 2 generations (16 bit when 32 and 64 were availabe) Some of this is vendor support, some of it lack of commitment to it, look at the clock speeds on the Itanium's and tell me, do they really expect this 64 bit pig to fly ?

I havent posted a resume online in nearly 2 years. Then only to two employment sites, I dont even remeber.
That said I get 1-2 calls a week, half of those from the principals, IBM has called directly, So has MS, they didnt READ the resume apparently, IBM became a nuiscance at one point, I asked where the hell they got my resume, they told me and I tried to track it down but to no avail.
Why are these people who spam resumes getting no response ? Is it lack of their skill sets ? I am a competent programmer on many plattforms and a competent sysadmin when I have to (I hate that part).
I worked at a "Dot-Com" from before they decided the Dot-Com route was the one they would take, when I started there were 10 developers, competent and a total of 17 people, some sales, some clerical. I bolted about 4 months before their crash and burn, it wasnt hard to see the writing on the wall with a burn rate like ours, we were over 100 people in a years time and STILL only had 10 ACTUAL PROGRAMMER, the rest were QA, PROJECT MANAGMENT, All kinds of other made up shit that had no room in an IT company of any worth. We never missed a deadline or dropped the ball UNTIL they started with the project managment crap.
MY point is, All of those 80 people we hired were wholly unsuited for the IT market, those who werent have jobs and had no problems finding jobs, I left for a Higher MUCH salary amongst other reasons.
Did any of these people think theyre not getting hired because theyre better suited to diggin ditches than IT work ????
What they had a taste of the IT glory days and think theyre qualified and dont realize they were just warm bodies ?

Its amazing, it sells so sugar coat it. I doubt many would have wanted to see Crowe portay the REAL Nash.
BUT in this country, and much of the world, the CONSUMER rules, who wants to see a movie about an asshole no matter how smart he is.
MS is NOT a security driven developemnt enviroment.
This kills me every time I read it, almost as much as the Linux sales memo, Can you see all the MS developers huddling around saying Ok were going to tighten the security up here,..... HA, they obviously didnt have a clue on the security side of things to begin with, the MS project managers preaching security over all. this is the blind leading the blind and the deaf.
Its great for marketing, well that is if it dosent backfire, if theeir stuff dosent get a whole lot tighter a whole lot quicker its going to make them look yet worse, they (MS) acts as if secuity didnt need to be a main goal. Shit, the Govt has judges ordering other govt websites down because of inadequite security on MS servers (Dept Interior?)
MS is going to push now, more than ever to limit disclosure, through this they can APPEAR to be accomplising their lofty goal set by BG.
This should be a funny story to watch , as they say it aint over till the fat lady sings;)

I bought RTCW, first game in 10 years at LEAST i bough, actually doom was the last and bfore that the Original Castle Wolfenstien, that said Im not a big gamer, but when I found out Linux binaries would be available, I plugged and bought RTCW, I am thrilled, games are a whole lot more fun than they used to be IMHO, Maybe Im just getting older an smaller things amuse me:)
(SEMI)PORTABLE games are the ticket, OpenGL has shown this with the ease RTCW was ported and others have run under Linux.
I looked at Loki's games, I certainly wasnt impressed enought to buy any, I demod the SOF, and found it....lame as hell, graphics sucked , and i was just early 90's blah. IMHO
I wonder how much of Loki's failure was not related to their limited market but rather their poor offerings, its a chicken and egg thing, If you come out with the most Killer game seen at first for linux only, drag a little on the windows version, you are sure to gain converts if nothing lse to play that game, BUT to come up with such an animal takes big bucks and marketing dollars, distributin channels, and you cant get the cash without a killer game, vicious circle.
As I said above it was mistated, not cash, but cash value assets.
If you figure in interest on those amounts you will see as on average it is correct.
I also didnt mean there would be a lot left after 50 years:)
This at one time was actually a detailed finacial study done circa 1985 at that time it was longer...BUT ibm also had more long term high $ support contracts.
IBM has been in a better cash position before, but the value of not only IBM is in its physical property but its IP as well, IBM is probably one of the largets companies in the world in that respect.
I have found here Mac users actually LIKE my setup on my Workstation, funny, I HATE MACS:)
I have Ximian Gnome on Rh 7.2 , 2.4.18pre7-rmap12a , its great, BUT in a mixed Mac and PC enviroment, throw Linux and Solaris on top of it an what fun Admin duties I have:)
We MUST retain the Mac enviroment, before you blast, we have equiptment in the near millions thats control software runs ONLY on Macs,
I am about to embark on a changeover for several PC users to Linux , they will I am sure be as productive, It all depends what you do.
Hell for games, and MS word applications I have a PC at home although it has become my wife solitaire machine running terminal server, I connect from rdesktop:)
If youve been with Linux for a while (me since RH 2.0) Think back to 5 years ago then 7 , would you have ever thought Linux would be in a place to compete on the generl destop market ?
Now think ahead, say 3 years....
Linux as a whole evolves VERY differently than windows and its apps, things that seem to liger for years, all of a sudden , en masse become sttable and usable, and latley pretty.
In 2-3 years Linux will be in a SERIOUS position to threaten ALL aspects of MS business, the beauty is there is absolutley nothing MS can do to stop it, or even slow it down, soon will come the time they have to embrace it offering their apps for it, when that happens it will be the death knell of MS operationg systems......
I have reached Karma cap and need no more please give my mod points (if any) to those less fortunate:)
No matter what you think of this and that IBM makes some killer stuff, the invented and locked down (and subsequently lost) the PC market, they have RULED the mainframe market for 30 years plus, and a fact many may not be aware, IBM has so much cash ammassed, it could cease all sales and continue to operate its current employee base for over 50 years.
There is an OLD addage, noone ever got fired for buying IBM, it has held true for decades as well, Many others have tried and failed to compete with IBM in the mainframe market, BIG companies, that are alas no more, I am sure this is what will happen with HP/Compaq too, Burroughs , Honywell, where are they now ?????
IBM has made some bbbbbaaaaaadddd choices in software on the desktop over the years, but will stick linux to the forefront, they are advertising the hell out of it and this is good, it gives managment a confidence in Linux that would be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to gain elsewhere.
My sincere hope is that IBM contributes what it should to Linux as a whole. Big corporations can be stingy IBM is no exception, I just hope the people there dont think Linux developers will forever develop for their platforms with no return, I hope that they dont se the contributions of linux coders as a "bottomless well" , I dont think this will happen they have contributeed code to other projects, good code. Apache etc....
GO BIG BLUE CRUSH THE MS INFADELS !
I wonder what MS woulda said if Ibm came to them again and said , yeah we need and OS for this mainframe, (MS REPLY. Well we have the blah proccesor liscencing on Windows XP, it.....:)
Moving beyond the moot, dosent this all remind you of the kitchen of the future stuff in the 50's or the films from ATT about the Transistor:)
They say a BROAD patent, but actually its pretty specific. it says a "silicon substrate" geuss what no silicon no patent issues, NOW before you get started there are other materials that suit this on a nanoscale much better, some of the RE are better suited to this task, its not a world ender, BUT actually there may be prior art on this, a real good chance.
Interesting is its not JUST HP but UCLA too.
Now you know where all that public (sprinkled with private) funding goes to the companies that run this country.
Who cares, isnt this a little like my kid can beat up your kid ????
People bitch about all the libs with gnome , and QT with KDE, The folks over at KDE have a good team a good direction and a good system. I am a gnome user for many reasons, BUT, I wish success to the KDE team, a good plan is always the best start, even if you dont follow it at least it gives you a sense that you have a common goal:)
We all in the *nix world of course know this not to be true, a common goal, Microsoft has one world domination, many of us *nix people are too worried about little things making it in, some out of ego some out of OUR neccesity.
the KDE team has done a great job all along, whats good for KDE is good for GNOME, if they do it first we can say, well that works nice, or that suck lets not do it that way,
Competition breeds the best, anything less is communism
Why not just open a unprotected share on you computer set max number of clients, run a port scanner that indexes all other open shares on whather class c you tell it to.
Set up an index server that does this as well as downloads a lists.txt file that has all the songs in your share directory indexed, a shell script on a cron tab to reindex and upload you lists,
FUCK the RIAA and MPAA, they would have to remove network capability from all computers.
Im not trolling Im serious. Make it as grey as possible. There is no way MS / SUN/IBM is going to remove the ability to network file share, make this p2p an extension of that. Most modern operating systems have the cabability built in.

This sounds "out there" but I have been working with electronics full time since I was a kid around 77, NOW, I started racing motorcycles around the same time, my hearing SUCKS, I have a very hard time hearing "bass" and my own voice it deep so half the time I cant hear myself talk...
That said, ever since I was a child I could "hear" or maybe its rather "feel" tv's on, monitors or other gadgets are pretty much the same. I have heard so many explanations on this, but a TV, any TV has a whine it sounds like a dog whisle almost. I can tell from outside ahouse if a TV or monitor (not so true with smaller ones) is on or not, My wife loves it as I hate a TV being on if noone is watching it. My mother thinks its freaky, I have been in 7000sq ft houses and asked where a TV was, I said a TV is on in this house somewhere, the said no, Then hour later we go down to the rec room to play pool, lo and behold someone left the TV on,
Circut City/ Sears, what have you drives me nuts.
You just learn to live with it, kinda like some bizzare sixth sense seen on , "Mystery Men" whats his power, he can hear if a TV is on 1/4 mile away !:)
This, its fu**king assinine, I dont go around telling people to turn their TV's off, who the hell are they to tell me I cant do wireless where I want, ITS A FACT OF LIFE !, Maybe next we should blot out the sky so people with light sensitive eyes can roam free without sunscreen and sunglasses.
Isnt wrapping aluminum foil around your head to stop this interference just as eccective ?
Is this a competitive effort against Lexis-Nexis against documents NOT currently indexed in Yahoo ?
If it is this is a good thing for Yahoo and its users, IF they are going to charge for documents already in the Yahoo search database then it sucks and they are ruining their core business.
Yahoo is one of the oldest, although I could never ever figure out why people liked it , I can never find a damm thing Im looking for there, google, no problem, prior to that HotBot,
Lexis-Nexus used to charge big bucks for this same type of "premeium" indexing, Im not sure anymore, but I doubt it has changed, this has been an invaluable tool for projects I worked on involving trade journals, and Industry specific news, much of which is still not publised to the web.
I love paper, the kind you can dog ear, fall asleep with over your eyes when the light gets too bright, and if trapped in a snowstorm use as kindling.

Looking at my bookshelf, well, I can honestly say I am single handedly responsible for the deforestation of the Amazon, oh well, call me a collector of things paper......
Id say is pretty amazing, I actually was able to retreive content I thought lost years ago.
My sites go back to 95, and yep theyre archived starting 96, this is too cool.
I wonder how much of the goverments docs that were pulled off post Sept 11 are still on this ?
A really funny note is it seems like all the p0rn is intact staring in 96, gotta archive the porn.
But seriously , I was unaware of this, Im gonna use this thing like hell as a sales tool if nothing else. Its also great to find certain content thats been pulled.
Uhhh, thats the point MS demo's pretty much hook you into it. One day you cant log on to your W2K box, or start getting DB connection errors from SQL, because you installed a demo and forgot, (I did this in a dev enviroment) solution, put the purchased one on, or buy a serial in the case of XP,or in the case of SQL server roll your clock back, actually early W2K server demo's too. I doubt XP is as stupid
They get it on and you have little choice as I belive you cannot easily unistall XP (may be wrong with all the SxS dll mapping it would be tough I think) Soooooooooo, with the new MS authenitication you cant just pick up a number off a SeRiALZ site, but Mr VISA and 199 will get you the pro version and they'll activate it over the phone:)

Clustering under vserver scheme is pretty dumb, if it was in fact meant to be serious.
vservers assume that a machine has resources avaiable and that no one instance is consuming 100% of the systems resources. Application built for utilization under a cluster would most likey CONSUME 100% quickly and easily, otherwise why run them under a cluster in the first place ????
I do like their monitor applet, its pretty coll for basic cluster managment/monitoring.

There is no singular known cause, and no treatment except liver transplant, which does resolve the problem, as it is confined to the liver.
.....THERE IS NO MONEY IN IT FOR THE DRUG COMPAINES !, THE SAME WENT FOR ALTERNATIVE TX OPTIONS. This is horeshit.
NOW, wehn he was diagnosed I asked WHY in gods name wasnt there a cure, the answer very simple, from the then Head of UNOS (all organs are allocated from here) and the #2 ranked transplan surgeon in the world
The DRUGS to sustain liver TX arent cheap, kidneys and hearts are multitudes worse and the only ones worth a crap are pateneted. old crap like cyclosporin is fine if every 3 years you want to have your gums cut back (it makes em grow) and dont mind having ONE HUGE eyebrow(no shit) The pharm companies arent going to like this at all, I can see them lobbying hard against this forno other reason to save their profit centers.
Then again I trade grocery discount cards......
Really,
I have been toying with the idea of REAL fish in my computer , OR submersing my whloe computer in a fish tank and filling it with water (Well and old computer not my ceuurent beastie)
I have seen the movie, it ok , more enttertaining when you watch it as FICTION, which basically it is.
Only hollywood could turn a Bisexual, Schitophrenic, Deadbeat dad into someone you fell for, or the Nazi's propoganda machine did with that whole crew of loonies.
Its amazing, it sells so sugar coat it. I doubt many would have wanted to see Crowe portay the REAL Nash.
BUT in this country, and much of the world, the CONSUMER rules, who wants to see a movie about an asshole no matter how smart he is.
MS is NOT a security driven developemnt enviroment.
;)
This should be a funny story to watch , as they say it aint over till the fat lady sings
GOTT MIT LINUX
Unfortunatley it looks like linux / unix isnt enough a a gaming market yet, look at the usage numbers in you logs, Hell writing mac games is more profitable and thats sad. Its also sad there arent more linux games
:)
I bought RTCW, first game in 10 years at LEAST i bough, actually doom was the last and bfore that the Original Castle Wolfenstien, that said Im not a big gamer, but when I found out Linux binaries would be available, I plugged and bought RTCW, I am thrilled, games are a whole lot more fun than they used to be IMHO, Maybe Im just getting older an smaller things amuse me
(SEMI)PORTABLE games are the ticket, OpenGL has shown this with the ease RTCW was ported and others have run under Linux.
:)
If you figure in interest on those amounts you will see as on average it is correct.
I also didnt mean there would be a lot left after 50 years
This at one time was actually a detailed finacial study done circa 1985 at that time it was longer...BUT ibm also had more long term high $ support contracts.
IBM has been in a better cash position before, but the value of not only IBM is in its physical property but its IP as well, IBM is probably one of the largets companies in the world in that respect.
I have found here Mac users actually LIKE my setup on my Workstation, funny, I HATE MACS :)
:)
:)
:)
I have Ximian Gnome on Rh 7.2 , 2.4.18pre7-rmap12a , its great, BUT in a mixed Mac and PC enviroment, throw Linux and Solaris on top of it an what fun Admin duties I have
We MUST retain the Mac enviroment, before you blast, we have equiptment in the near millions thats control software runs ONLY on Macs,
I am about to embark on a changeover for several PC users to Linux , they will I am sure be as productive, It all depends what you do.
Hell for games, and MS word applications I have a PC at home although it has become my wife solitaire machine running terminal server, I connect from rdesktop
I have reached Karma cap and need no more please give my mod points (if any) to those less fortunate
No matter what you think of this and that IBM makes some killer stuff, the invented and locked down (and subsequently lost) the PC market, they have RULED the mainframe market for 30 years plus, and a fact many may not be aware, IBM has so much cash ammassed, it could cease all sales and continue to operate its current employee base for over 50 years.
.....:)
Well we have the blah proccesor liscencing on Windows XP, it
Moving beyond the moot, dosent this all remind you of the kitchen of the future stuff in the 50's or the films from ATT about the Transistor :)
I run KDE apps under gnome all the time, Kchart, Kfile, Kfind, Konquerer
I understand the question, dont get me wrong.
But I dont see its implications, admittedly I havent tried running gnome stuff under KDE
KDE stuff runs fine under Gnome, am I just one luck SOB here ?
Who cares, isnt this a little like my kid can beat up your kid ????
:)
People bitch about all the libs with gnome , and QT with KDE, The folks over at KDE have a good team a good direction and a good system. I am a gnome user for many reasons, BUT, I wish success to the KDE team, a good plan is always the best start, even if you dont follow it at least it gives you a sense that you have a common goal
/IBM is going to remove the ability to network file share, make this p2p an extension of that. Most modern operating systems have the cabability built in.
:)
There is no way MS / SUN
GREY, GREY, GREY .
Make it about the comanies violationg free speech, not in the lame ass way others have tried, ALSO a point you can sue judges, and cout officers, police etc, IF IT HAS BEEN PROVEN they VIOLATED you basic civil rights, Making people stop sharing whatever they wish I belive is a violation of my free speech. Set up a honeypot service, that only trades uncopyrigthed materials and lie in wait for the RIAA and some overzealous most likey bribed judges, and open fire, first nail the RIAA on hacking attempts, then go after everyone in line.
If the courts become succeptiable to injury as weel, maybe some of this crap would never make it in the first place.
Yes, I have reached karma cap and need no more, please mod this down as needed
People are scoffing, but oh what a kludge, caldera only did it for the publicity, who cares.
There is some GOOD code in there, some is crap just like all projects.
There are/were some code segments that were optimized VERY well, and hy dont laugh I remerber USING a pdp-11.
Point is the horsepower ot these machines sucked by modern standards, things we take for granted were MAJOR tasks, some of those routines were refined over a lifecycle longer than BSD and Linux combined.
My dad, a coder starting in the 60 tought me in about 1979, when he handed over his collection of computer mags, Byte and the lot, you can NEVER , EVER have too much source code, good or bad.
Im could care less what Caldera's motives are theyre a dead fish. When was the last time YOU installed that distro ? BUT they should be congratulated, I agree they should open up the other sources as well, but who am I to ask, hey while youre at it all people reading this post should give me all their old ????, see dosent fly. Its theirs , they bought it, and paid for it, sorta.
Im gonna grab it asap, there about 4 things I hate in the 2.4.18/2.5 series kernel, BSD IMHO dosent have the solution in theirs either, I keep looking , Im at a mental roadblock so to say(nothing new there) if these sources even point me in the right direction to solve one of those problems I will be etternally greatful
I have had acouple of the MONSTER programming volumes for years, there are great for refrence, altohug admittedly Ive never read a monster like this cover to cover.
One day you cant log on to your W2K box, or start getting DB connection errors from SQL, because you installed a demo and forgot, (I did this in a dev enviroment) solution, put the purchased one on, or buy a serial in the case of XP ,or in the case of SQL server roll your clock back, actually early W2K server demo's too. I doubt XP is as stupid
:)
:)
They get it on and you have little choice as I belive you cannot easily unistall XP (may be wrong with all the SxS dll mapping it would be tough I think) Soooooooooo, with the new MS authenitication you cant just pick up a number off a SeRiALZ site, but Mr VISA and 199 will get you the pro version and they'll activate it over the phone
Hell if I was an evil megolitic corporation and a billionaire goober that ran it and had more money than god, I'd do it too , cant blame em for trying
Clustering under vserver scheme is pretty dumb, if it was in fact meant to be serious.
....
vservers assume that a machine has resources avaiable and that no one instance is consuming 100% of the systems resources. Application built for utilization under a cluster would most likey CONSUME 100% quickly and easily, otherwise why run them under a cluster in the first place ????
I do like their monitor applet, its pretty coll for basic cluster managment/monitoring.
At the same time all you people complaining about price...lets see
800mhz cele w256 meg each MB, NIC and whatever storage, lets say on the cheap $300 each
4 350 Watt PS $100
Ok a really cool case and PS
Time to load software, lets say weve done it before and it take 8 hours
Physical Assembly and testing 5 hours
My bill rate and personal time is worth 120/hr
$1560
Hardware $2400
Power Supply $ 100
Mildy cool case$ 100
THAT COMES TO 4160, Hell, add to that I dont have to build the SOB AND it comes under warranty , you betch you A** Id buy one of these
PLEASE think before you gripe about prices...
Looks like a deal to me
PS, Kernel version is 2.4.12 from what I saw on their link to products showing a screen shot Ayeee.....
