If California was a country it'd be the 5th richest the economy in the world. So Russia is still wealthy, plus it has massive military power, and more importantly it has intent. Dismissing Russia as a threat because they aren't in the top 5 rich list seems a bit ignorant.

so they'll come here because they have to to keep their jobs. And so the Global Race to the Bottom (tm) continues. Second Dark Ages here we come.

Assuming when you say "here" you mean the US then no. What will happen is the same that happened to 20th century Europe when the US was the land of the free, all the smart people moved out of Europe and the global centre of power shifted towards America.
If Trump continues down this path then the smart people will simply choose the next best place to live and work and America will lose it's place at the top.
This isn't a global race to the bottom, it's an American race to the bottom. A lesson in how to squander immeasurable wealth by electing a moron to gut your economy from the inside out.

When it comes to big decisions, Boss-T, the President of the United States, is picking up the phone to TV celebrities on deliberately-biased cable news shows, rather than the leading tech executives in the country, international diplomats, and god knows who else, including, apparently, MIT Scientists.

To be fair, this is actually a tactic that works politically. It doesn't work at making the world a better place, but it does work at staying popular because you are simply tapping into already popular opinion and re-enforcing it. It is the great flaw with democracy, you end up with the leadership you deserve rather than what you need.

Maybe society as a whole was just more bigoted then, but that's still no excuse for a lack of massive, nationwide resistance to the atrocities committed by their government. So I can't agree that most of them had normal human decency.

Depends how you define normal? Milgram taught us that to obedience is normal human behaviour, and we can see it even today in less extreme circumstances. When the authorities say something, most people still follow even when it makes no sense.
This is why we need checks and balances in all positions of power, because the human brain can't be trusted to always do the right thing. It is normal for humans to do the wrong thing and we all need to recognise this.
