    All i can do is send a big FUCK YOU out to mainstream media, and the RIAA.

    Most of us know that mainstream media sucks. Most of us hate almost everything on the radio, because there is no variety. For those of us who have tasted the music from foreign artists can attest, the pop-crap stations with their pathetic-repeat-every-45-minute playlists can just burn in hell.

    But then again there are [people] out there that actually like this CRAP because it's been spoon-fed to them since their conception. It's all about control. Media conglomerates want you to eat what THEY want to feed you. It's absolute lunacy.

    Most of the stuff I listen to comes from artists who have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the RIAA, groups that never 'sold out' to this satanic cult. Where's the justice for these groups? These groups who come over from Europe every year, and find that their followers are growing faster than they could ever had imagined? These groups who were discovered on the likes of Audiogalaxy by all these new fans. These groups who actually DON'T CARE that people share their music?

    I buy a lot of CDs, or at least I used to. Back when I was brainwashed and thought that paying for the CD helped out the artists. I know better now. I'm upset that I helped pump dollar after dollar into some fat-ass RIAA exec's wallet.

    I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that MOST of /. readers were getting music from AG, and that is why there is so much hostility in this thread. I think that THIS should be the last straw.. I think that we all need to make an INTENTIONAL decision to NOT buy CDs.. ever again.

    Trade music, copy mp3s to CD and distribute them in public places. Do whatever it takes to spread the word about non-mainstream artists, and don't buy CD's for the crap-40 bands that are playing on the radio. Not only will this put the RIAA in serious financial harm, it will also promote the artists that you like to listen to.

    If you want to support the artists, go out of your way to attend concerts... offer them cash in person.. buy them a drink or two.. offer to take them out after the show. These things aren't that crazy, I've done all of these things. Ask them if they have any merchandise to sell, and if not make suggestions. These are sources of income that sidestep the Nazi-istic ways of the RIAA.

    Sorry for the rant. It's just funny that so many of you bitch about the RIAA, when in fact you are perpetuating it's existance.

    Maybe we should offer counter-intelligence to the Al-qaeda forces, and tell them that the RIAA's headquarters is the new whitehouse. Maybe we will all get lucky.

    my question is this.. how does one acquire new territory? i mean what makes the territory YOU claim to be yours RECOGNIZED by others as belonging to you? sure someone can send a group of guys to the moon, stick a flag in the ground and claim that the moon is theirs... but what about, say, small islands that are in international waters.. i can take a boat out there and stick a flag down in the sand, does that make the land mine?

    i think the question is a bit deeper than that. see an individual cannot really OWN land that is not already owned by a larger nation. in other words, if a small island exists within a particular nation's waters, and if that land is not recorded as belonging to anyone, i'm sure that a person can purchase/claim that land from his parent nation.

    however, an individual has no representation amongst the nations of the world. he/she cannot defend his new territory, he/she cannot compete with entire nations that might try taking that territory by force. he/she has no trade representation, financially in this world they are a nobody and therefor their 'territory' is not legitimate and will not be recognized.

    so lets assume an individual manages to defend his territory by some means.. say a square kilometer of the moon. an individual could send up a robot that is fully autonomous and could pick up small lunar rocks and hurl them at 500+ m/s at anything that it perceives to be a threat to its territory. against a lightly armored lunar rover or explorer in a space suit, this would be a killing blow.

    so now you have a person, here on earth, controlling a piece of land on the moon. he/she invested in this land and took measures to defend it. to whom does that square kilometer of land belong to? where does one draw the line? one could send an entire 'army' of simple mecha up there and defend the entire lunar surface. provided that this individual could provide for their own safety on earth until they were able to build a base up there and move to the moon, who could honestly say that the moon isn't under the control of this individual....

    and who here can state that possession of land involves anything more than control...

    And assuming we inflate to 2atm(mars) = 0.02atm(earth)

    PV = nRT
    n = PV/RT = (0.02atm * 5.03 x10^8 L) / (0.0821 L atm/mol K * 223 K)

    n = 2.75x10^5 moles within balloon...

    M(H2)=2 g/mol * n = 5.5x10^5 grams

    yeah, that's a LOT of hydrogen.. but lets continue

    For the atmosphere this hydrogen is displacing...
    Which, BTW, is over 95% CO2, unlike earth which has a much lighter atmosphere for a given pressure..

    PV = nRT
    n = PV/RT = (0.01atm * 5.03x10^8 L) / (0.0821 L arm/mol K * 223 K)
    n = 1.38x10^5 moles of atmoshpere displaced

    Taking the difference, we find that there is 115.5x10^5 grams or...
    11550 kg of lifting force here...

    Of course we might need to put more H2 into the balloon to have it hold it's shape.. for each martian atmosphere of additional pressure we inflate the craft with, go ahead and reduce the lift by 275 kilograms. Double the local atmospheric pressure should be sufficient.

    Now, can we build an airship of that size and keep it's weight under 10000 kg?

Since all gasses in the martian atmosphere are going to follow that law, as temperature is constant as is pressure for localized areas (surrounding the dirigible). Also R doesn't change.. So the volume that the gas will occupy doesn't become a huge challenge like one would think.

    The other thing to take into account is the composition of the martian atmosphere.. its what, 95% CO2? (MW 44) compared to Earth's 79% Nitrogen and 20% Oxygen (MW 28 and 32 respectively).

    The point is that for a given cubic meter of atmosphere on Mars (if compressed to 1atm) it would be more dense than a cubic meter of earth's atmosphere at the same pressure.

    Sure there is going to be an altitude limit imposed on such a craft in martian atmospheric conditions, but for doing work at low altitudes I think this is much more than feasible.

    I don't have the desire to do all the fun math stuffs to actually test the validity of this argument, i was hoping someone would try to disprove this point mathematically then realize that it is possible.. =)

The main problem with such craft on the martian surface would be the fact that 1) they are huge, and 2) they are light. Lets not forget the possibility you COULD be in the air when such a storm kicks up.. nothing could save your arse if that happened..

    I think this will be the way we go.. because a dirigible could be packed into a small payload area for transport to the martian surface. The added bonus is that Mars has VERY little oxygen in the atmosphere.. so it becomes safe to fill the dirigible with hydrogen as opposed to helium, giving you much more lifting power.. the problem comes with storing compress hydrogen when you deflate these behemoths.. wouldn't want to store the tanks near an oxygen rich environment like say.. in the living structures or greenhouses.. =)
