  1. Re:pffft. I call shenanigans on Neal Stephenson Responds With Wit and Humor · · Score: 1

A wireless microphone is actually made up of two (or three, depending on whether or not you count the antenna) pieces. You have the microphone, which is the small black cylinder you see clipped on the lapels of TV interviewees. The microphone is attached by cable to the transmitter box, which includes a battery, power switch, volume slider, and belt clip (the antenna is attached to that transmitter box). Therefore, one could very easily grasp the microphone in their hand and whirl the transmitter box around.

If you want to really analyze the whirling, while it is theoretically possible (you have a cable and a massive object on the end of it - that's all you need) to whirl, it may not be useful in this situation, as the microphone and cable could very well pop out of their socket in the transmitter box, thus allowing the transmitter box to follow its natural trajectory tangent to the circular whirl-path.

    Oh well.

    I think it's a very interesting question.

If "they" tell us, they can be sure that the whole world is going to break down: riots, suicides, etc... pretty much a total collapse of social structure.

The reasons not to? First of all, it's mean (unethical). Second of all, what if letting the problem be known could potentially help solve it?

I think that, in this case, if I were "they" and it was absolutely known and confirmed that impact would kill everyone on the planet, I would go ahead and let the news out. Let everyone have some fun before they all die at the same time...

A year ago I introduced my girlfriend to Command and Conquer Generals. Since then it's been the only game she plays (yes, besides Tetris). Occasionally she brings her computer over and we LAN. We have yet to try playing together online, but it's on our to-do list. She's not at all interested in First-person Shooters, but she likes Generals because you have to think and it's like a big puzzle. Additionally, if you do want a good multiplayer Tetris, I suggest Tetrinet. It is very customizable, fun, and easy to use.

Have you written screen plays for any of your books or series'? What are your thoughts on making movies out of them?

I'm not sure about the physical state the nitrogen is in, but I know he was able to get upwards of 2 ghz. However, I can't stop from wondering..."How often does his computer *freeze* up?"

On the same day, a poll about bestseller lists and an article on bestseller lists appears on SlashDot. Many users, after voting for CowboyNeal's Anime Bestseller List, comment on how they think /. is selling out. Hours later, a bestseller article appears. The first poster talks about shamless plugs. This is either an eery coincidence or something really is going on. Just some food for thought.

Anyway, thanks for correcting me, and I do agree, I don't like how you get kicked back so much by the recoil, but it IS realistic, and I like that... I haven't played Medal of Honor or DoD, but it's on my list, promise. I agree about coop in Sam, and also about Q3 and UT.

  9. Good games, some crack advice, and RTC Wolfenstein on Good Games for LAN Parties? · · Score: 1

I'm a member of bi-weekly local LAN party, we meet in the basement of a jewelry store. Anyway, here's a list of the games which are good to play and either don't need CD's to run multiplayer or are easily copied to a burned CD:

-Starcraft (crack for Broodwar 1.08 at Battlezone )
    -Half-life w/ various mods
    -Quake 3
-Serious Sam-a doom clone, just run around blasting bad-guys, set in ancient Egypt, fighting against ancient monsters and robots. Good times.

    ...and the main attraction...

-Return to Castle Wolfenstein...I'm surprised as hell no one mentioned this. Multiplayer Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RTCW) is absolutely awesome. It has great gameplay, fine playability on a LAN, and excellent teamplay. There are different types of gameplay: Objective Mode, Stopwatch Mode, and Checktpoint Mode. And instead of explaining each, I'm just going to quote http://www.planetwolfenstein.com.

Objective mode Challenges players to complete a series of objective for their team, with the first team to do so winning that round.

Stopwatch mode Similar to Objective mode, but once one team wins a round the teams switch sides (Axis become Allies, and vice versa) and they replay the map, with the attackers trying to beat the previous team's time.

Checkpoint mode Has players battling for control of a number of flags scattered throughout the level. The first team to capture all the flags wins.

Some other differences between single and multi-player RTCW...the bigger guns slow you down when you have them (as they should), barbwire hurts, and some other little stuff :)

Also, after installation, you don't need the RTCW CD to play single OR multi-player, which is awesome.

Well, I recommend strongly this game for LAN parties, for its easy transerability (is that a word?) between computers with one copy, great gameplay, and the sheer joy of tracing a Kraut through a sniper scope and then blasting him into pieces by driving a piece of lead through him at the speed of sound. Ahhh, good times.

"In the beginning..." was great. Gotta love the free tanks. Interface (he co-wrote it with Stephen Bury) was just cool, and I'm currently half-way through Diamond Age, which promises to be another Steaphenson best-seller.
