It doesn't sound like they've made you an enormous offer, otherwise you'd be writing this article from your new yacht, right?

Instead, they've made you a sensible offer. Are you at a sensible stage of your life? Do you have commitments and obligations that would suffer if you didn't act sensibly?

If not, don't be afraid to go yourself. Instead, take their interest as a vote for encouragement that your product has serious potential.

Try to raise capital instead of selling out. Offer them a cut as silent partners. Don't be scared if they don't agree initially. Practise your negotiation skills and see if you can't come to a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Perhaps they could take a cut of your business in exchange for funding, office space, access to HR, legal & Financial resources, etc...

The big change in these types of arrangements is that you will have to formalise your processes (read: boring, repetitive, bloated) and start sacrificing some of your product to suit the market. This is not such a bad thing in business and is necessary to allow growth, quality control and delegation.

    good luck.

There's nothing wrong with the copy at all. This is just the open source version. To get it working:

    1. Reinstall your OS, taking note of which libraries you compile into the kernel and which you merely reference as modules (this will be used later).

    2. Scan all the ansi files in the download and replace references to other hardware with the .c files representing those in your own system. Re-Make the game and the installer and install it to a folder accessible by all users on your system, unless you're the only user and have a separate partition for your /usr path and wish to install there.

    3. Start the game, turn off sound and network options (don't kid yourself; it's for the best) and start a new game.

    4. If it runs too slowly, go back to step one and change the kernel\module mix to something more suitable.

Yes, this was an OSS troll and a superficial attempt at light humour... take a breath, count to ten, then mod me down.

    Hey Metro,

I have to agree that you'd have gotten the money, especially after people visited your shows.

Furthermore, I think the sales dynamic will shift inline with other business ventures. Let me explain...

    What I've commonly observed is:
    1. A new (start-up) artist records a single.
    2. Industry bodies (the venture capitalists) pump millions of dollars worth of advertising into promoting the single, which inevitably reaches a "Top 20" billboard and becomes popular.
    3. The industry body needs a major cut of the profits to get an ROI.
    4. The artist got this opportunity due to the quality of their looks, voice (a skill not an art), marketability; a single 'talent' that doesn't mean they'll be a long-term player in the industry.
    5. The following singles start to flop... the artist ends up failing.

I hope the new model works like this:
    1. An new (start-up) artist records a single.
    2. The artist promotes the single within their budgetary constraints and makes it available for sale online.
    3. Initial sales are low and people pay a low price for the album. This is inline with most start-up businesses which rarely turn a profit in the first 6 - 12 months.
    4. The artist tours and gets airtime and more people buy the album. People go to the site to buy the latest album they've heard and also decide to buy the back-catalogue. As the artist builds a reputation, people choose to pay more for the album and there are more sales overall. ie. the artists profits rise with their reputation, just like traditional business models.

In summary, I think this business model is more stable and offers long-term potential.

    Any thoughts??

This lack of development on existing, widely used platforms, by Microsoft irks me too. Another example is the bi-directional data sharing offered with Office 2k7. This is a fantastic enhancement to the Office suite, (and in enterprise) much more so than the 'ribbon' UI.

To take advantage of these features and make full use of products like MOSS, companies have to upgrade their users to 2k7. Why can't Microsoft offer a (paid for, if necessary) patch to Office 2k3 which already offers downstream data sharing?

(Yes, I know the obvious 'to sell more copies of 2k7' reason.
