  1. Chapters/Indigo Prices on The Complete Far Side Archive · · Score: 1

Here's a link [chapters.indigo.ca] to the Chapters.Indigo.Ca website. The price is only $136 CDN if you purchase it online.

The price is $195 CDN if you purchase it at a store or an in-store kiosk... reason for the price difference is that the website doesn't have to pay people like me to sell on the floor or pay rent, etc...

    Enjoy.

  2. Re:Private property on Gaim Speaks Out on MSN Ban · · Score: 1

Of course, this arguably has issues for the monopoly settlement, too - Messenger is (supposedly) integral to the OS now. You can't remove it unless you're willing to spend time fighting the OS.

While this isn't technically "removing" Messenger, just rename the executable to msninmsgs.exe1. This will prevent Windows from loading it at either startup or with either of the Outlooks.

  3. Re:it's about time... on SARS Contained · · Score: 1

I've found that the media hype for SARS was absolutely ridiculous. I *knew* that SARS had been contained to nearly one hospital, but then again, when the story of a nurse with SARS symptoms had been spotted on a train, I couldn't help but wonder if she had been at my workplace.

Since I'm in book sales, we get any and all types... the next night, sure enough, I started to get pretty warm and achy. Like a good Citizen I quarantined myself, lost tons of pay, worried my co-workers at both of my jobs for naught. No SARS.

When I think back on this, I'm almost positive that the symptoms were partially psychologically induced. I might've had something, but it sure wasn't SARS.

In this day and age where we're all worried about government conspiracies and trying to fight the man (or Microsoft), we should add "Media Hype & Sensationalism" to that list. If "SARS" had been named something else, something less ominous sounding, we sure wouldn't have seen the coverage that we did. There are courses in high school and university that cover this, but perhaps something more mainstream like a public-funded initiative at awareness.

Even now with the "outbreak contained", I'm worried about crossing the border and telling them I'm from Toronto.

  4. Right To Land on China Accelerates Mars Program · · Score: 1

I am fairly certain that any land on any planet besides Earth (with the exception of Antarctica) belongs to everyone. To my knowledge this is a rule instated by the United Nations.

Now with all this talk about China planning to head up to Mars, it gets me wondering just how much China, or USA/EU for that matter, will honour that policy.

It's all good in theory, except I can definitely see a point where China/USA/EU lands on Mars first, claims a certain spot for their own for research, what have you, and decides its in the interests of "National Security" to not allow anyone from "Agency X" to have access. With all that land up there just waiting to be had, I'm sure it won't be a problem in our lifetime, but it sure will be something our children or grandchildren will have to face.

I wonder how closely the future of Mars will mirror Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy?

  5. PHP & mySQL Programming on Programming PHP · · Score: 1

Aside from the PHP Programming book, I have to vouch for the PHP & mySQL Programming book... it's not the exact title.... the book is sitting there on my shelf... I'm just too lazy to turn around and read the title.

Anyway... I learned a LOT about PHP and mySQL and practical applications that are working out very nicely for my business. I was a total beginner at it, but it's given me a good reference source for future programming endeavours. Check it out!

  6. Re:We all knew this was going to happen on Microsoft to Hire Xbox Hackers? · · Score: 1

A couple of key points that I've pointed out before. One: MICROSOFT does NOT CARE about individual piracy of windows. That's a fact. They care about idiots pirating it, and they care about coroprations pirating 4000 copies of it. They DO NOT CARE about the average slashdot reader pirating windows, for this reason: We are their free tech support.

Unfortunately this information has failed to reach those who are employed by Microsoft in some sort of security manner.

Case: I know of one such person who claims to work for Microsoft, reporting piracy, etc. Not only does he get his panties tied up in a knot if you mention having a copy of M$, just forget about mentioning ANYTHING pirated or mp3ish or even ogg-ish.

Even after explaining to him your viewpoint (which I share)... he's still at it. Sure you can say he's forced to act this way as it's his job, however, I firmly believe he actually believes that Microsoft cares about the individual.... they want the big time piraters.

By no means am I advocating piracy, but it does happen. Microsoft WILL NOT go after the individual... they're more concerned about the big boys.

Somebody please send this "Security Hound" a nice swift kick in the pants and get him off everyone's backs.
