  1. Anyone Hankering For Civilization III? on Loki Goes Postal · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just noticed that CivIII went gold today (press release [Firaxis]).

Personally I think that this title would be very popular on the Linux platform, a 3D accelerator is not even required. I don't know how well SMAC did on Linux, but this title would be a logical step for turn-based strategy fans.

The slated platforms are WIndows and Mac, I hope Loki will consider a port for this title.

    Hiya,

I week ago I got to check out a friend's iBook - the new ultra-portable white polycarbonate model. The engineering was fantastic, you have to understand this thing weighed around 2KG or less and had a 1024x768 12" screen, twin USB, single Firewire, 500 Mhz G3 CPU, 128MB RAM, 8MB ATI Rage128 Mobility graphics, single DVD-ROM inbuilt. 3 year warranty too. All for around AUD$3,500 - which is very competitive to an equivalent Dell-brand machine. My friend uses it for office work and DV video editing.

The workmanship appeared to be top notch when I checked it out. Specs are one thing, but when you check it out you get the impression of a very well built machine.

  3. Re:The Money Game - Inspiron 4000 on Notebook Upgrades: Hacking your Dell/Compaq/Toshiba · · Score: 1

    Hiya,

Yeah I use a Dell Inspiron 4000 fitted with a Pentium III 700. The 8MB ATI Rage 128 mobility surprisingly performs quite well in most games. Counterstrike and Quake 3 at 640x480 16-bit delivers very good gameplay, 800x600 isn't too bad, but at 1024x768 it starts to get shunky.

Still Homeworld at 1024x768 is pretty solid.

From my understanding the video logic is part of the motherboard, and I doubt any upgrade can be done.

The Inspiron 4000 is very Linux friendly, the software/hardware 3Com modem is the only thing I can't get working under Linux.

    Hi,

Get yourself a recent distribution and install it. No further work is necessary, both my optical mice and digital camera work great.

  5. Re:Linux laptop comes standard with winmodem? on IBM ThinkPad T22 w/Linux Review · · Score: 2, Informative

    Hi,

Can't vouch for IBM notebooks, but I bought a Dell Inspiron 4000 back in December 2000. Fitted with a 3Com Mini-PCI Ethernet/V.90 modem combo, it works flawlessly in Windows 2000.

Under Linux, the Ethernet part works great, but the software modem is not supported due to a lack of suitable driver (it's one of the very few hardware issues left to be resolved in my opinion).

The modem turns out to be a software modem, but yet, it works fantastically. Both the connection speed and robustness is on par with a NetComm hardware modem I use in the other room. Even though the notebook's 3D board isn't too leading edge (ATI rage 128 8MB M3 Mobility), it plays Half-Life Counterstrike over a 50kb connect very well.

So from this experience, I'd have to saw that some software modems may be bad, but some others may not be.

    Cheers,

  6. Why Not? If Dual Athlons Are Cheap... on AMD Athlon Multi-Processor Under Linux · · Score: 1

Look at the site, it's GamePC - we're not talking about an article targetted towards corporate IT managers for their server farms here. Personally, if Athlon MP systems were cheap enough, I'd buy a dual Athlon system for the significant performance gains and the cool SMP factor.

  7. Australia's Under Funded Heath and Education... on NASA In Financial Trouble · · Score: 1

I'll tell you that it's not only in the US and Canada where this is happenning. Prevailing ignorance and sheer reluctance to see long-term is a problem all around the world. Even some of my brightest and most educated friends tend to cast such far-flung and philosophical thought into their peripherally mind set. Anybody who doesn't (which would include myself), are deemed too idealistic. I don't pretend to completely understand the whole national government policy in the US, Canada, or even here in Australia, but I tend to speculate that it is much harder to implement policies then to simply create them. Here in Australia, the health and university education system are largely having under funding and staff problems. Last week the opposition government vowed to emphasis the "Knowledge Nation" in Australia with targets such as doubling university funding by 2005 and so forth. This is all well and good, but once that government gets elected and they push it as a government policy, the result might not hit anywhere near their slated target.

    I'll assume you're being sarcastic...

On the serious topic, anybody who has studied some of Western philosophy would of heard of the theories and ideas from the likes of Immanuel Kant, John Rawls, and others under the banner of Distributive Justice.

Simply put, humans seem to have a real conscious problem with inequality, and we would rather aim to better equalise wealth, opportunities, burdens, and rewards that society produces.

To only reward some in society and disregard others may seem logical - but such extreme Utilitarianism would be best described by most of us as being calculated and cold-blooded. This wouldn't be such a big problem, but human beings aren't computers.

Hiya, I live in Australia but I did pay LA and New York a visit in January. Yes it would seem that the PS2 is having a major shortage in the US. This is certainly not evident here - but I think much of that is due to the pricey nature off a AUD$700 console. The situation could be true in Europe as well..
