  4. What about banner exchanges? on New Patent for Serving Ads to Newspaper Sites · · Score: 2

Remember this? A lot of people still do it. If I "advertise" my website using a banner exchange, it will get displayed over several other websites, some of them might contain news. The more I display other people's banners, the more my own are displayed. If I provide an alt tag, I essentially changed my ad.

Seems like it infringes a lot of points of this patent.

But isn't Moby one of these 'artists' that samples music from other musicians? He gets riffs and melodies from famous musics, mix with computer generated sound effects, and call it a work of his own?

He may have addressed the issue with a soft approach, by making a fairy tale that technology is hurting his sales. But where would he been if he couldn't use this same techniques? Looks like he's more egocentric than I've previouly thought.

  18. Use drupal on Weblogs and Local News? · · Score: 1

I am not a developer neither a paid promoter of Drupal, but I think it has what you need.

It's a news system, pretty much like Slashdot. The major difference is the submission queue, like Scoop that runs Kuro5hin, and anyone can rate comments.

Slashcode, which runs Slashdot, is better for targetted news, IMHO. The selective karma system allows wiser users to rate comments. For a wider audience website, I think you need to give more freedom of choice to your users.

Oh, and Drupal also allows users to build blogs, it has a news feed script, collaborative book and a forum. It has a wider scope.

About the specifics of your problem, yes, I do think blogging can be useful for local newspaper. The citizens will get to know each other, and feel like they were part of a community. I would say go for it. A news script performs the tasks that you want, and if you can enhance the community spirit of your users, better.

Couldn't an argument like "MS, look. Terrorists are using Windows, give me the source" be used?

    1) Under North American new laws and current enviroment, looks like it can happen;

    2) Bush likes corporations so it won't mess with MS.

  22. Misleading on Spoofing P2P Networks as Marketing Plot · · Score: 2, Interesting

    Doesn't work:

Reason 1) Most p2p clients return the most popular files, so if someone downloads a fake, they will delete. Unless RIAA or whetever is running a p2p farm.

Reason 2) Someone said something about CRC. A lot of clients do what is called we usually call hashing, with SHA1, Tiger (even bitprint), etc... But it's widely used to compare versions of the same file, regardless of the title. No Gnutella client currently supports search by hash, but Edonkey does (also urls like edonkey://HASHNUMBER)

Anyway, fakes are usually useless. And all they do is incite the user to go to sites like ShareReactor and read the new and the forums. So the user begins to meet with other people, form a community, learn more and more how to do p2p the right way.

Oh, btw, Morpheus 1.9 will be out soon. Probaly a crap release like the first Preview Edition, which is a Gnucleus clone.

Also, search by hash and download of segments (unfinished parts of a file from other computers) are expected soon to be deployed on Gnutella. I just hope the damn GDF decides this fast, since it's really the next step that should be taken (IMHO).

Essentially, try to look at this situation with other eyes.
