They were bay networks POS things (just sending a blank UDP packet to them shut them down), and the sysadmin didn't seem to know how to type "enable ip base" (BTW, he should have looked at the logs and seen my telnet command "disable ip base")

I think that school districts are both authoritative and ignorant. This makes them danegerous if you get caught.

So you're saying that windows sucks on slow CPUs but is ok against competitors on faster computers?

Even if I did agree with you, how is MSSQL going to handle 6TB of data? Do you have any evidence (besides MS terra server which is a HUGE cluster) that a single MSSQL database server can process 6TB of data? With mySQL I have had no problems with memory leaks, infinite loops, etc, and I've had as little as 20MB os disk space and 400k of memory (including swap) free.

    BTW, I have a reason to run Win2k on a 486: Because I can.

Yes, you are shooting in the dark, but your kind of close. Casinos don't use 486's too often.

I used SQL on a much smaller scale than a large info-gathering corporation, but if MSSQL goes slow on my system when compared to mySQL, then I am pretty sure that the problem will scale up. It's just the same code getting executed faster. It would be like an Acura NSX towing a bicycle trailer compared to a Dodge Ram towing a boat. The forces are just greater on the truck. Your "gasoline" (if your engine were the CPU), in this (somewhat unlikely) analogy is either MSSQL or mySQL. If mySQL works good in the small car, why shouldn't it work good in the truck? Yes, I know it's dumb, but you started it.

After the hybrid crops were introduced in India, China, and the Indonesias, it was found out that they were less resistant to natural pests. To compensate, farmers had to spray more pesticides on them.

Also, to get more yield out of their fields, farmers stopped growing other crops and devoted land only to the hybrid plants. This meant that pests could feed on the weak hybrids all year round. Pest populations went out of control, since the natural predators of them were killed by pesticides. Now, most farmers have reverted to crop rotation and the use of natural plants.

Until someone can make a crop that grows faster, is more resistant to pests, uses less nutrients, and doesn't cause harm to the environment, then we will continue to use normal crops. That is not a good thing, since they are worse on the land, but farmers have a bottom line too.

These old things are still very useful. I use my 486 for developing C, C++, and PERL programs. I can connect to the internet over my home LAN (where another 486 is a router/firewall). I also use it to develop a game, Spatial Disruption where we actually used this 486 as a web server with over 100 people playing.

486's and low end Pentiums have thier usefulness in many aspects of computing. They may not be fast, but they get the job done, especially if you overclock them! The efficency of Linux or a BSD distro also helps out. Windows is just too big and slow for these computers if you want to do what I'm doing with them. I have a few bones to pick with your arguments:

Given the fact that parents are legally reponsible for making sure their kids are in school and not out getting into trouble (not to mention that this is also a basic part of good parenting), I'm not sure what the problem is here.

Parents may be legally responsible, but they should trust their teen just a little bit. If you can't trust your teen, they won't trust you. They will find other people that they can trust, whether those people are good or bad doesn't matter. Good parenting is ensuring that your child grows up to become a productive member of society. Watching your teen constantly will make them stray farther away from you, makeing your duty as a parent harder.

Also, what is to stop someone from breaking into the system and doing everything from changing lunch menus to grades to detention slips? Just once, we should trust teens and give them some freedom. Teens need freedom to become adults.

...but the fact is that certain kids demand constant monitoring...

The only teens that need constant monitoring are ones in jail. Most will learn from thier mistakes and try another behavior. This is the process of becoming an adult. If we are treated like children, we will behave like children. If we are treated as adults, we will behave like adults.

You, yourself started thinking like an adult because of a drinking party. Maybe you should reconsider your viewpoint. You cannot control who your child will become, you can only advise them and form a mutual, trusting bond with them.
