It's about time some schools finally stood up to the RIAA thug scare tactics. Universities are always trying to emulate the best in the business, perhaps this will set a precedent.
With $40+ Billion sitting in the bank (not including assets) this appears to be another slap on the wrist for Microsoft. I was hoping AOL might stick this one out longer. I guess when your company is struggling, $750 mil doesn't sound so bad after all.
Now, I'm only in college, but while we did dabble a bit in Maple and a few others that you mentioned, the only Math software package I've used extensively is MathCad. I've found it to be the most user friendly of the bunch, and they have a new version out: MathCad.com
Actually, her full name is "Madonna Veronica Louise Ciccone". I know this because my g/f is a huuuuuuuuge fan. Car rides with her are NOT what I would call fun.
This article was published by the associated press shortly after this slashdot story went live. Kudos to poster for injecting/. into the mainstream press, and to dissy for uncovering the stock picture. Both are mentioned in the article.
Just out of curiosity, did you ever end up going before WIPO? How did things pan out?
I had just started advertising the domain for less than a months time before I got my first 'cease and desist'. I ignored them hoping they'd go away, but got another one about a month later. I wasn't about to risk lawsuit from a multi-billion dollar corporation, so I called Arent Fox and told them they could have it if they refunded the 2 year registration fee. They did, and I did. I didn't know as much back then as I do now, but I'm not sure if handling the situation differently would have resulted in any different outcome.
This is nothing new. AOL has been doing this to virtually any domain name that has the letters "A" "O" and "L" in sequential form for as long as I can remember.
I also had an a-o-l domain name. "EnhanceAOL.com" was my site before I got a cease and desist from Arent Fox claiming that I was diluting their trademark. My site was an aol add-on site - software that actually improved upon their client software (hence the term 'enhance aol'. They don't look at the "content" of your site. They don't care if your trying to save the poor starving children of the world. If you have "aol" somewhere in your domain, they're going to take it.
Don't believe me? I found this site: search.wipo.int which lists at least some of the AOL domains that have been repo-ed by AOL -- If anyone knows of a better source please post because I know there's been more.

AOL's new Linux PC

This goes a long way towards bringing Linux desktop to the masses. Once grandma can check her AOL mail with the "you've got mail" sound and can read the Steve Case community updates, she'll be happy with her PC since it does everything that she expects.
Actually 9.0 its pretty official. The press release is here and discussion on the cooker mailing list implies that this is indeed the final version (barring any last second changes, but that doesn't seem likely).
There's several Win32 programs that already have the tabbed IMs feature, the best being Extreme Messenger. It will also log your conversations in HTML format.
oh and it also hides the ads on the AOL AIM client.
I found the most interesting part of the Judge's ruling to be the following:
Microsoft maintains that "Windows" cannot be generic because it is not the name for a class of products. Microsoft's reasoning is flawed because it ignores the Seventh Circuit's case law holding that when a composite term is generic and is made up of an adjective that classifies a noun, the adjective itself can also be a generic form. Microsoft's argument also ignores its own analysis of the Defendant's evidence, which shows repeated references to the composite terms "windows manager", "windowing environment", "windows programs" and several others. Microsoft's outline of the evidence in the Declaration of Timothy L. Boller even characterizes each of these composite terms as the genus for a type of product.
Apparently Microsoft used the very same terms to describe Lindows that they were trying to defend as unique. How's that for shooting yourself in the foot.:)

For those of you that want to attempt to cancel your AOL account like Jon Katz, the number is listed on this page.
Interestingly, Earthlink also has the phone numbers to cancel just about any popular Internet service (except for themselves of course) here.

So does that mean that the answer to the universe isn't really 42?
A few good popup killers for IE (for those unfortunate enough to browse without Mozilla);
hdsoft PopNot - Shareware, personal favorite
Panicware Pop-up Stopper - free
EMS Project - free
Meaya Popup Filter - shareware

Even the unknown creatures that may live in Lake Vostok? Last I heard it was sorta hard to reach :)

Why would I want to pay $0.99 when I can already burn songs for free?

Want a distro without the KDE politics? Download the recently (like today) released Mandrake 9.0 and don't forget to use a mirror.

Ignore everything with a cluttered cover. If I find the cover confusing, I doubt the content will be better.
Don't judge a book by its cover! You can still learn much from a book where the cover artist got a little overzealous.
